Be it known that we, JOSEPH B. SINGEn end ARTHUR B. LEVY, citizens of the United States, and residents of the citv of New e York, county und State oi New York, have invented certain new end useful improvements in Folding Displel Devices, ot which the following is a. speci cetion.
The present invention relates to/'folding ic display devices of the type shown in Letters Potent of the United States, No. 1,210,- 008, granted to us December 26th, 1916.
The general object of the present invention is to simplify 'the construction and re- 15 duce the cost of manufacture of the type of display box above referred to, end, at the seme time, to increase the effective display surface without appreciably adding to the bulk or area, heretofore had by the bon when in folded or knockdown position.
To these ends the invention resides in the employment of an intermediate section and interposing said intermediate section between side or wing sections, ond providing o. connection therebetween for adopting two of said sections to fold upon each other or upon the intermediate section; 'forming the said panel, the wing or side end the intermediate sections from e single blank ot reletively thin or lightsweight iibrous stock material, such as pesteboard, and utilizing the supporting properties which each section provides 'for the other to give the required stability to the relatively thin ond 'flexible body,7 while 'the box is in display position.

In the embodiment illustrated in the so drawings, the box is comprised of 'three sections, of which o, designates the intermediate section, o, o side or wing section end c,
another side or wing section, said sections l) and c bein disposed on opposite sides of the. intermediate section a, ond 4flexibly coni nected thereto so that the side section b, when the parts are disposed, as shown in Figure 4, may be 'folded u 'on the intermediate section a, after whic the side section c, is 'foldoble upon the section b. The sections a', o and c, conform one with the other in point of size, so that when folded therr will appear es shown in Figures 2 and 3. As shown in Figures 2 to 7 the sections o and o, ere constructed so os to pro vide containers d and c, which are normally closed except for on opening 5 in the :iront woll of each, through which the interior ci the container is visible. From the foregoing, it is evident that the sections a, b, c, g, h and t', are -foldable into arallel relation with each other, as shown lnFigures 2 and 3. When the sections are extended from the position shown in Figure 2, to that shown in igure 4, and parallel one to the other, the display panel may be turned outwardly from the position as shown by dotted line to that shown by full lines in Figure 4. The sections 'b and o are then adjusted so as to extend in angular relation to section a, whereupon Ythe box is adapted to support itself in upright position, as shown in Figure 6, when arranged upon a suitable surface, such as in a show case or on a counter or shelf or in a show window. This adjustment of the -parts will be referred to as the display position, it being obvious that when the parts are arranged, as shown in Figures 6 and 7, so as to face the observer, the contents of the vbox will be visible through the openings 5 of the containers, to ether with the advertising matter arrange on thedisplay panel, or on the sections a, b` and c, yor on both. A bottom closure fiap has a section 18 thereof, which is hinged to the lower end of the front wall b', and desi ned to'extend over the space between' the ront, back and side walls ofthe container d when the same is formed,'as shown in Figure-5. A section 19, crease-hinged to 4section 18,A and provided with tabs 20-20, is provided for extending into container d, so t at the said tabs thereof may interlock with the lside walls, the tab 21 of the side wall 15 being provided so as to interlock with the tab .20 1n a well-known manner. A top closure flap, consistingI of the-sections 22, 23 and 24, is provided at'the upper end of the back 13 of container d,- the section23 bein ada ted to extend over of the intermediate section a, by a crease-` hinge 29, and to the front wall of the secinsonne tion c, by a crease-hinge 30.' The front wall of the conta-incre, is also connected by a crease-hinge 31 to a flange 32, which forms a side wall of the ycontainer e, vand which is connected with the back 33 thereof by a crease-hinge 35. A crease-hinge' 36 connects back 33 to a flange 37, forming the opposite side wall of container e, which is connected by a crease-hinge 38 to the sealing-flap'39. A bottom closure lapis made up of the sections40 and 41,'connected together by the crease-hinge 42 and to the back 33 by the crease-hinge 43. A top closure flap, consisting of the sections 44,l 45 and 46 is connected to the upper end of thev back 33 by crease line 44. The crease-hinges 47 and 48 connect the sections 44, 45 and 46 together. Suitable tabs 49 are provided on the section 41 of the lower closure flap to co-operate with a tab 5() at the lower end of the side wall 37., Tabs'51-- and 52 are provide at the upper end4 of the side walls 32 and 37.
In forming the container e, the sections thereof, are bent on their respective creasehinges as described in connection with container d. In forming the blank j, openings 5 5 of the front walls of sections b and c are formed, as shown, and a lateral exten sion is also formed at the intermediate portion of the blank, so as to provide the display panel K, the sections g, l1., and of which are connected by the crease hinges 8', 29' and 30, forming continuations of the crease-hinges 8, 29 and 30. With the above construction it will be observed that one face of the blank provides the entire outer surface of the box, when the same is arranged in display position, so that the decorative printing or advertising matter to be arranged on the front or displa surface is applied to one face of the blan only,` thus reducing the printing to one operation, when the same is done in a single color, and obviating the expensive procedure of printing on two sides of the blank, whether the decorative printing consists of one or more colors. This feature of forming the blank so that one face thereof constitutes the outer face of the sections, a, b, and o, will hold good in the event that .the containers d and e are formed separate from the front walls of sections a, b, and c, and subsequently secured thereto by an adhesive and in a case where three containers are ernployed as shown in Figure 8.
In Figure 9 of the drawin s, we have illustrated another alternative orm of the device wherein the containers e', d are directly connected to the edges of the intermediate section a by means of crease hinges indicated .at 8', the flange 7 above referred to being omitted. The intermediate section a is ap proximately twice the width of the individual containers. These containers are adapted to be folded inwardly from their sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
We claim: l. In a display device, a pair of oppositely vdisposed containers, and `an intermediate section hingedly connecting the containers and havinga fold line between its hinged side edges to admit folding of the containers in superposed relation upon each other and upon the intermediate section.
2. In a display device oppositely disposed side sections each of which constitutesa container, an intermediate section providing space for a container and having one of its vertically located sidesl hingedly united to a side of one of said side sections so that the said sections may fold one upon the other, and a flexible connection between the side of the other of said side sections and the opposite side of the intermediate section adapted to permit the last named side section to fold upon the first named side section and a display panel flexibly connected to one of the side sections and adapted to be folded therewith.
3. In a display device oppositely disposed side sections each of which constitutes a l between and foldable therewith.
4. In a display device oppositely disposed side sections each of which constitutes a container, an intermediate section providing space for a container and having one side thereof hingedly united to a side of one of said side sections so that the said sections may fold one upon the other, and a flexible connection between a side of the other of said side sections and the opposite side of the intermediate section adapted to permit the lastnamed side section to fold upon the iirst named side section anda display panel consisting of hingcdly united sections iexibly connected to the said side and intermediate sections and adapted to be arranged therebetween and foldable therewith.
5. A display device consisting of a single blank of sheet material having parts adapted 'to be `folded into two opposite marginal containers connected byan inter mediate web section, said intermediate web section having a fold line near one side edge, said marginal containers adapted to be folded in superposed ,relation upon saidv in,- termediate vsection and into compact relation therewith.
6. A display' device consisting of a single blank of sheet material having foldable vparts adapted to form two separate marginal containers connected to each other by an intermediate web section adapted to carry a centrally located container,said blank being) scored at the connections between said we section and the containers-to provide hinges permitting said containers to be folded inwardly from their display. positions upon the same side o: said web section andinto compact relation therewith,
