The two thicknesses of each double sidewall panel are glued together. The foregoing wall panels are connected by bellows fold panels, each having an adhesive section on one side of its fold line. A main cover panel is connected to the single rear wall panel. Cover side panels, and a cover front panel which can be used for display purposes, are provided for the main cover panel. Side flaps of the cover front panel cooperate with adjacent glued folded segments of the cover side panels to connect together said side and front panels.

ALEXANDER N\ MAROF'F I m-roRueY BOX, AND BLANK THEREFOR BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This relates to folding boxes and blanks for forming such boxes. In this highly developed art, there have been proposed numerous difierent arrangements of boxes, and blanks to facilitate economical forming of such boxes.
One class of these devices involves a box having its front, side, and rear walls all of a double thickness, the box not being provided with a cover. These are exemplified by US. Pat. No. 3,137,434 granted Jun. 16, 1964 to R. A. Berg; and U.S. Pat. No. 3,189,248 granted Jun. 15, 1965 to H. I. Roccaforte.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In the preferred form of the present invention, there is provided a novel box and blank having a main base panel and double front and sidewall base panels. A single rear wall base panel is provided for the main base panel. Bellows fold panels connect adjacent portions of all the aforesaid wall panels, by means of glue provided on one side of the fold line of the bellows panels. The two walls of each double thickness sidewall are glued together.
The top or cover of the box is provided by a cover panel connected to the rear wall base panel. Side and front wall panels are provided for the cover panel. Means are provided to connect together adjacent portions of said side and front wall cover panels. The front wall panel of the cover, being readily visible when the box is assembled, offers a desirable display area for advertising messages.
It is therefore the primary object of the present invention to provide a novel box.
It is a further object to provide a novel blank for forming a box.
It is a further object to provide a novel box, and blank therefor, including a cover.
It is a further object to provide a box blank which is economical to make, but will nevertheless be easy to assemble and will provide a sturdy box, including a cover.
The above, and other objects, advantages, and features of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from the following detailed description, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

Referring to the drawing, and particularly FIG. 1, the reference numeral 2 designates the preferred form of the novel blank of the invention which is adapted to be folded to form the novel box of the invention.
Blank 2 comprises a main base panel 4 defined by and between longitudinal fold lines 6 and 8, and transverse fold lines and 12, formed in the blank.
These, and the other fold lines of the blank can be provided in any suitable form. Preferably, they are in the form of score lines, except as indicated otherwise.
Fold lines 6 and 8 respectively define the opposed side edges of base panel 4. Fold lines 10 and 12 respectively define the base panel's front and rear edges.
Secured to base panel 4 along side edge fold line 6 is a double sidewall base panel I4. The latter comprises an outer wall panel 14a adjacent the main base panel 4, and an inner wall panel 14b connected to panel 14a along a fold line 16. A cutout 14c is formed at the forward end of panel 14b.
A longitudinal deposit of glue 18 is provided on the outer wall panel 14a. As will be described subsequently, panel 14b is adapted to be folded down on panel 14a along fold line 16. These two panels will be adhered together by glue area 18.
An opposed base sidewall panel 20, identical to panel 14, is provided along the side edge fold line 8 of main base panel 4. Like panel 114, panel 20 comprises outer and inner sidewall panels 20a and 20b separated by a fold line 22, a cutout 200 in panel 20b, and a longitudinal glue deposit 24 on panel 20a.
Blank 2 further includes a double wall base front wall panel 26 secured to base panel 4 along the latter's front edge fold line 10. Front wall panel 26 comprises an outer wall panel 26a and an inner wall panel 26b, lying on opposite sides of a transverse fold line 28. Fold lines 6 and 8 define the opposed side edges of these two panels.
The blank includes tabs 30 and 32 at the opposed side edges of panel 26b, these tabs lying outside respective fold lines 6 and 8.
At its forward edge, panel 26b is provided with tabs 34, 36, adapted to fit into slits 38, 40 in main base panel 4 when the blank is folded to form the box.
The right-hand portion of blank 2 is provided with longitudinal fold lines 42 and 44, and transverse fold lines 46 and 48.
A single wall rear wall 50 panel is defined between longitudinal fold lines 6 and 8 and transverse fold lines 12 and 46.
Bellows fold panels are provided in the bland 2 for connecting and reinforcing adjacent portions of the side, front, and rear wall panels 26, 14, 50, 20 previously described. Such bellows fold panels are designated in the drawing as 52, 54, 56, and 58 respectively, and are identical in construction.
Thus, for example, bellows fold panel 52, which is defined between the forward and .upper ends of fold lines 6 and 10, respectively, connects the left-hand end of sidewall panel 14 and the adjacent side edge of front wall panel 26. Bellows panel 52 contains a diagonal fold line 52a running outwardly from the intersection of fold lines 6 and 10 to a transverse slit or cut 52b extending inwardly from the outerside edge of the panel. Diagonal fold line 52a is preferably in the form of spaced, out through slits. A glue deposit 52c, of the shape shown in the drawing, is provided on the portion of panel 52 lying outside fold line 52a and cut 52b.
As readily seen in FIG. I, the structure of the bellows fold panels 54, 56 and 58 is identical with panel 52. Corresponding parts of these former panels are designated by the reference numeral of the panel followed by the letter which identifies the corresponding part in panel 52. Bellows panel 54 is defined between the ends of fold lines 6 and 12; bellows panel 58 between the ends of fold lines 8 and 12; and bellows panel 58 between the ends of fold lines 8 and 10.
The cover portion of blank 2 will now be described. A main cover panel 60 is defined between transverse fold lines 46, 48, which respectively form the rear and front edges of the panel; and longitudinal fold lines 42, 44, which form the opposed side edges of the panel.
A cover side panel 62 is provided along fold line 42. At its front (right-hand in FIG. 1) edge portion, panel 62 is provided with a diagonal fold line 62a defining a triangular segment 62b on which is a glue deposit 620. At least the intermediate portion of fold line 62a is preferably in the form of spaced, partially cut through slits.
An identical side cover panel 64 is provided along the opposite side edge fold line 44 of cover panel 60. Side cover panel 64 includes a diagonal fold line 64a defining a triangular segment 64b having a glue deposit 64c, and like fold line 62a, fold line 64a is preferably in the form of spaced partially cut through slits.
Along the front edge fold line 48 of cover panel 60, there is provided a cover front panel 66. End flaps 68 and 70 forming extensions of panel 66 respectively lie outside longitudinal fold lines 42 and 44.
As will be described subsequently, flaps 68 and 70 are adapted to cooperate with glue areas 62b and 64b to connect the cover front panel 66 with the opposed cover side panels 62 and 64.
In the final, assembled form of the box, the cover side and front walls 62, 64, 66 are intended to swing closed outside the base sidewalls. Accordingly, the longitudinal cover fold lines 42 and 44 each lie a short distance outwardly of the base panel fold lines 6 and 8, so as to properly position the side cover panels 62, 64 for closing movement.
Slots 72, 74, 76, 78 are provided in the blank at the respective front and rear edges of cover side panels 62 and 64 to provide adequate clearance for movement of the contiguous portions of the blank when the blank is folded to form the box.
The blank as described above can be formed of any suitable desired material such as cardboard, by usual manufacturing techniques. It will be understood that all the described glue deposit areas are on the same side of the blank.
FIGS. 2 and 3 show progressive stages in the assembly of the blank to the condition in which it is shipped to the user. The base sidewall panels 14 and are folded inwardly about their fold lines 16 and 22 to cause the inner wall panels 14b and 20b to overlie and be adhered to their respective outer wall panels 14a and 20a by glue areas 18 and 24. Thus, double thickness sidewall panels are provided by the adhered- together panels 14a, 14b and 20a, 20b. FIG. 2 shows panel 14b so folded over and adhered to panel 14a.
Then, panel 14 together with the bellows fold panels 52 and 54 at either end thereof are folded inwardly about fold line 6 to swing the foregoing three panels as a unit into overlying abutting relation with panels 260, 4 and 50, respectively, as shown in FIG. 3. This three-panel unit, comprising panels 14, 52 and 54, is held in this position by virtue of the glue areas 52c and 540 of the bellows panels adhering the latter panels to panels 26a and 50.
In like fashion, the opposite three-panel unit comprising panels 20, and the adjacent bellows panels 56, 58 are folded over on fold line 8, the glue areas 56c and 580 of the latter panels adhering them to panels 26a and 50, as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3. The panel 50 is reinforced or double-walled for a substantial portion of its width and height because of the adjacent adhered portions of the bellows panels 54, 56.
The cover portion of the blank 2 is placed in the condition shown in FIG. 3 as follows. The end flaps 68 and 70 of front cover panel 66 are folded inwardly about fold lines 42 and 44, as shown by flap 70 in FIG. 2. The triangular segments 62b and 64b of the cover side panels 62 and 64 are folded outwardly about fold lines 62a and 64a. The side panels 62 and 64 themselves are then folded inwardly about fold lines 42 and 44, as exemplified by flap 64 in FIG. 2. It will be seen that the glue areas 62c and 64c are still facing upwardly because of the foregoing two folding steps. Front cover panel 66, with the previously infolded end flaps 68, 70, is now folded inwardly on fold line 48 to adhere the latter flaps to the glue areas 620 and 640 of triangular segments 62b and 64b (FIG. 3). A portion of each end flap 68, 70 is left free or unadhered to allow the cover front panel 66 to be folded over onto the cover main panel 60 and side panels 62, 64, as shown in FIG. 3. Such free portions designated 69 and 71 as shown in FIG. 2, also serve to hold the cover front panel and side panels in erected position with respect to the cover main panel when the carton is setup to receive merchandise.
Referring to FIG. 3, the assembled blank is placed in condition for shipping by folding the panel 26b about fold line 28 over onto panel 26a and the bellows panels 52, 58. The cover portion of the assembly is folded about fold line 46 over onto the goods-receiving portion of the assembly, including the rear panel 50, the main base panel 4, and side panels 14, 20.
A box, as shown in FIG. 4, is formed in the following fashion. The cover portion of the assembly is lifted from the tray or goods-receiving portion to a position as shown in FIG. 3. The double- sidewall panels 14 and 20 are swung outwardly to an upright or vertical position. Due to the connections at the bellows fold panels 52, 58, the front panel 26a is erected. Inner wall panel 26b is then folded downwardly along fold line 28 causing end tabs 30 and 32 to be automatically folded inwardly along fold lines 6 and 8. The tabs 30 and 32 snap into the recesses defined by the side panel inner wall cutouts 14c and 20c and the respective underlying portions of the outer wall panels 14a and 20a (FIG. 5). The front wall 26 is thus held locked in vertical position by tabs 30 and 32. The front wall 26 is further held in position by the tabs 34, 36 passing through and being held in the slits 38 and 40 of base panel 4 when the inner wall panel 26b is folded over. Also, due to the bellows fold connections at 54, 56, the panel 50 is erected when initially, the side panels 14, 20 are swung outwardly to upright position.
Instead of the tab-slit locking means 34, 38 and 36, 40 just described, an alternative arrangement that can be employed is a continuous long infoldable tab provided along the forward free edge of panel 26b, and adapted to snap beneath the lower, free edge of inner sidewall panels 14b and 20b. As can be seen from the showing of panel 14b in FIG. 2, this lower edge is spaced outwardly of the adjacent horizontal fold line, and will therefore be spaced above the base panel 4 when the box is formed.
The cover portion of the completed box is formed by lifting the side panels 62, 64 to an upright position. This will cause the panel 66 to be erected and locked in position because of such panels connection-to the side panels 62, 64 by the end flaps 68, 70.
The completed box of FIG. 4 has now been formed.
While there has been shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be understood that numerous variations and modifications can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Accordingly, it is intended that the foregoing disclosure be exemplary only, and not in any way limitative of the following claims.
lclaim:
l. A device of the class described comprising: a main base panel; opposed base sidewall panels and a base front wall panel provided along corresponding edges of said main base panel, each of said sidewall and front wall panels comprising inner and outer wall panels; each of said base sidewall panels being provided with glue means on at least one of its inner and outer wall panels for adhering said inner and outer wall panels together; a base rear wall panel provided along another edge of said main base panel; bellows fold panels adjacent to and for interconnecting said side, front, and rear wall panels; means, including a diagonal fold line, dividing each of said bellows fold panels into two portions; glue means provided on only one of said portions; a main cover panel; opposed cover sidewall panels and a cover front wall panel provided along corresponding edges of said main cover panel; means for interconnecting said cover front wall panel with said cover sidewall panels, said interconnecting means including glue means; respective fold line means intermediate the main base panel and its associated panels and the main cover panel and its associated panels, and a fold line intermediate the main cover panel and the base rear wall panel whereby the main cover panel is hinged directly to the base rear wall panel.
2. The combination according to claim 1 wherein said lastmentioned interconnecting means comprises: a segment at the forward end of each of said cover sidewall panels defined by a diagonal fold line in each of said panels; foldable flaps provided at the opposed side edges of said cover front wall panel; and glue means provided on said segments for adhering each of said segments to an adjacent one of said flaps.
3. The combination according to claim 2 wherein: the inner and outer wall panels of each of said base sidewall panels are adhered to each other and are in folded-down position adjacent said main base panel; and the bellows fold panels adjacent each of said sidewalls panels are in folded-down position overlying and adhered by said bellows panel glue means to portions of said base front and rear wall panels.
4. The combination according to claim 3 wherein: said cover sidewall panels are disposed in folded-down position relative to said main cover panel; said front cover panel is disposed in folded-down position relative to said main cover panel over said cover sidewall panels and connected thereto by said flaps being adhered to said segments by said segment glue means.
