This invention relates to improvements in folding display boxes.
It is an object of this invention to provide for a display box made up of one folded blank, which can be readily assembled.
It is a further object of this invention to provide for a display box, in which assembled parts thereof can be used in a variety of positions, thus adding to the effect-iveness of the display.
It is still another object of this invention to provide for a display box having sufiicient exposed surfaces for ample display printing.
It is yet another object of this invention to provide for a display box, which, although spread out for display purposes, can be arranged so as to take up a minimum amount of space for shipping purposes.
This invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of parts and in the unique relations of the members and in the relative proportioning and disposition thereof; all as more completely outlined herein.
To enable others skilled in the art so fully to comprehend the underlying features thereof that they may en1- body the same by the modifications in structure and relation contemplated by this invention, a drawing depicting certain forms of the invention has been annexed as a part of this disclosure, and in such drawing, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, of which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a display box in accordance with the invention, in one of its embodiments;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a blank from which the box is constituted;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view (in similar scale) of the box in two of the many possible positions;
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a display box in a modified form and in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank used in its construction;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a box in accordance with the blank shown in Fig. 6 but with the various parts of the display box in different position;
Fig. 8 is a plan view of the box shown in Fig. 7.
Referring to the drawings:
The blank 10 in its preferred shape looks like an H with the four wings 11, 12, 13, 14, forming the boxes 15, 16, 17, and 18 when assembled. The center bar 19 forms the handle 20 in the assembled condition. Each of the boxes 15, 16, 17, 18 consists of the two side walls 21, 22 and the two end walls 23, 24. These walls 21, 23, 22 and 24 are joined by the crease lines 25, 26 and 27. At 28 the unit 11 is joined to the center portion 19. .End flap 29 is joined at 30 to the box wall portions 11. This flap 29 is preferably coated with glue or with cement 31 of conventional consistency for glueing to the spot 32 indicated in dotted lines. The bottom 33 for each of the boxes 15, 16, 17 and 18 is constituted of a wall 34 having a flap 35 for closing in the conventional manner for folding boxes. Small flaps 36, 37 are employed to aid in closing up the bottoms of the boxes. As mentioned, all four boxes are constructed in a similar manner. The center portion 19 is folded on line 38 and glued or cemented together, thus forming a reinforced intermediate connecting section or handle 20.
This construction of a collapsible box has the advantage that the box may be displayed in many different arrangements of the winged sections, as clearly illustrated by examples in Figs. 1, 3 and 4.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 5 to 8, inclusive, the display folding box 50 is constructed from the blank 51, having the handle, or intermediate connecting section 52 from which extends on one side the series of side wall 53 and the intermediate end walls 55 and 56. These walls 53, 55 and 56 are connected by crease lines 57 and 58 respectively. Crease line 59 connects the box walls to the section 52. This section 52 consists of two panels 60 and 61 separated by a crease line 62. End flap 63 in closed position will engage the side wall portion 56 at the dotted place 64. Bottom 65 with flap 66 closes the bottom of the larger box 67. The two smaller boxes 68 and 69 are identical in structure and consist of the side walls 70, 71 and the end walls 72, 73. These side and end walls 70, 72, 71 and 73, respectively, are connected by crease lines 74, 75, 76. At 77 the box sections connect with the portion 52. Flap 78 is glued as at 79 to side wall 70. Bottom 80 with flap 81 and end flaps 82 are used to close the bottom of these two boxes. The panels 60 and 61 as well as flaps 63 and 78 are provided with glue 83 for assembly purposes.
From the foregoing it is evident that there has been provided herein a folding shipping and display box which includes a vertically-disposed intermediate fiat section 20; 52, formed by doubling the section material upon itself providing a pair of contiguous parallel walls 20a, 20b; 60, 61; upstanding rectangular boxes 15, 16, 17, 18; 67, 68, 69; being hingedly connected to respective vertical side edges of respective walls of said fiat section, the said boxes, by virtue of their hinged connections with said flat section being adapted to be swung horizontally in a plurality of directions with relation to said fiat section.
It is understood that the material may be of any desired substance such as, for example, paper board, fiber board, leather, imitation leather, plastic, etc.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is apparent that an improved, simple, practical and inexpensive display box for the purpose intended is provided. It is apparent, however, that immaterial changes and modifications may be made by skilled persons without departing from the true spirit and scope of the invention as outlined in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a folding shipping and display box, a verticallydisposed intermediate flat section formed by doubling the section material upon itself providing a pair of contiguous parallel walls, a first upstanding rectangular box hinged to a vertical edge of a wall of said pair of walls and having its upper end spaced below the upper ends of said walls, a second upstanding rectangular box hinged to the opposite vertical edge of said wall of said pair of walls and having its upper end spaced below the upper ends of said walls, and a third upstanding rectangular box connected to at least one vertical edge of the other wall of said pair of walls and having its upper ends spaced below the upper ends of said walls, at least said first and second boxes by virtue of their hinged connections with said section being swingable horizontally in a plurality of directions with relation to said section and said pair of walls extending above said boxes to provide a visually accessible display surface and hand grip portion.
2. In a folding shipping and display box according to the combination claimed in claim 1, wherein said third box is hingedly connected to said one edge of the other wall, and including a fourth upstanding rectangular box hinged to the other vertical edge of said other wall of said pair of walls.
3. In a folding box according to the combination claimed in claim 2, wherein the said upstanding rectangular boxes are open at their tops.
4. In a folding shipping and display box according to the combination claimed in claim 1, wherein at least two of said upstanding rectangular boxes are adapted to be arranged at opposite side edges of and at right angles to said section.
5. In a folding shipping and display box according to the combination claimed in claim 4, wherein the third one of said upstanding rectangular boxes is adapted to be formed opposite said section with the latter forming a wall of said third box.
6. In a folding box according to the combination claimed in claim 1, wherein said third box is hingedly connected to said one edge of the other wall, and including a fourth upstanding rectangular box hinged to the other vertical edge of said other wall of said pair of walls, and wherein said first and second boxes and said third and fourth boxes are adapted to be arranged in pairs at opposite sides of said section.
7. A folding shipping and display box having the combinaiion claimed in claim 1, and being formed of a single blan 8. In a folding shipping and display box: a verticallydisposed intermediate flat section formed by doubling the section material upon itself providing a pair of contiguous parallel walls, a first upstanding rectangular box hinged at a corner thereof to one vertical edge of a wall of said pair of walls, a second upstanding rectangular box hinged at a corner thereof to the opposite vertical edge of said Wall of said pair of Walls, and a box-forming section connected to at least one vertical edge of the other wall of said pair of walls, at least said first and second upstanding rectangular boxes, by virtue of their hinged connections with said intermediate flat section, being swingable horizontally in a plurality of positions with relation to said intermediate flat section, said box being formed of a single blank.
