2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to improvements in folding cartons and particularly to improvements in end closures for such cartons. The object of my invention is to provide a simple end closure, in-
tegral with the side walls of the carton which can be easily and simply opened and closed, which gives rigidity to the carton and which may or may not be used with adhesive. My invention is particularly, although not exclusively, adapted 'for use with a hexagonal carton and I shall illustrate and describeit in connection with such a one. which disclose a preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hexagonal carton equipped with the end closure of the present invention,
Figure 2 is a top view of the carton shown in Fi ure 1.
Figure 3 is a view of the single piece of material or blank from which my carton is made up. shown flat and unfolded, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the upper end of my carton with the closure open, but in position to be inserted and closed.
' The folding carton illustrated in these drawings has, when folded, the shape of a right hexagonal prism the side panels or walls of which are all of the same size, and is provided with recessed end closures. from a single blank of cardboard or other similar light, still material, as shown in Figure 3. The six side panels I are defined by scoring, indicated by dot and dash lines, along which the blank is bent to form the carton. A longitudinal flap 2 along the edge of the sixth panel is designed to be glued to the under face of the first panel to form the completed-hexagonal prism, as shown best in Figure 2. The end closures are formed from trapezoidal sections 3 and la, each having four integral flaps 4-, 5, 8, and I and la,
5a, 6a, and la, respectively, all scored for folding,
as indicated.
The flap 4 joins and is integral with the third panel and the flap la Joins and is integral with the sixth. A pair of similar, but unnumbered. closure sections with similar fiaps extend from the lower edge of the blank to form a bottom closure.
To form the carton, the prismatic body is formed, as already explained, by folding the blank along the score lines and gluing flap 2 to' the under face of the first panel. The flaps I, I. 5, I, 4a, 5a, 6a, and la-and their counterparts on the bottom closure-having been folded along their score lines, as indicated in Figure 2, the
Thus in the accompanying drawings The whole is folded up two long central flaps 6 and 6a are grasped and held together by thumb and forefinger, as shown in Figure 4,-and the closure pushed downward into the end of the carton until the parts assume 5 the position shown in Figures 1 and 2. The closure is opened by Pulling upwardly on the flaps 6 and 6a.
When the end closures are closed a strong, rigid carton is formed. The closure flaps may be glued to the side wall panels of the body, but if the parts are carefully proportioned the-closure may be held closed for most purposes merely by frictional engagement of the flaps with the side walls of the carton and with each other. The two middle flaps together form an upstanding rib which not only serves as a convenient handle for use in opening and closing the carton, but also serves to add rigidity to the structure.
I claim:
1. In a carton of the character described, a
plurality of joined side walls having free edges at one end thereof, a sectional end wall arranged substantially normal to said side walls and spaced inwardly from said free edges, said end wall comprising complemental halves having meeting edges, 9. .flap integrally joining each half to one of said side walls, and a flap integrally joined to each half along said meeting edges, said last mentioned flaps on the respective halves cooperating to define a reinforcing rib on the exterior surface of said end wall.
2. In a carton of the character described, a plurality of side walls having free edges at one end thereof, a sectional end wall comprising complemental halves, each of said halves having a joining edge and a meeting edge, said edges being substantially parallel, a flap integrally joined to each joining edge of one of said halves and integrally joined to one of said side walls, and a of said end wall.
