msrmismron Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1920,
Application filed May 5, 1920. Serial No. 379,045.
pertains more particularly to cartons ot the display type.
It is one of the primary objects of the present invention to provide a" carton n which theinaterial or goods contained thereilrmay be advantageously displayed tor. sale, said carton being capable, of being closedto protect its. contents when not in display position. j j s It further object of the present invention to greatly lessen the cost of manufacture of boxes of this character.
So far as known, boxes of this character as at present. constructed have been formed in such a manner as to necessitate the printing on both sides of the block in order that display on theexteriorsurfaces of the boxes may be had. This not only necessitates a donble printing operation but also requires the use of stock finished on both sides, thus greatly increasing the cost. of manufacture.
It, is a'turther object of the present invention to constructIa device of this character in such'a mannerv that all of the printingj may be done on one side of the blank and a single. operation, thus eliminating one of the operations of; printing, and, at the samev time, permitting the use of a cheaper grade of stock than that which must necessarily be used when both sides of the blank are printed upon.
With the above andother objects in view reference is had to the accompanying drawings', in which Figure 1 is a perspective view. of my improved, carton in its closed position:
Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof in the display position;
Fig. 3 is a detail planview of the blank from which the box is formed;
Fig. 4.- is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 4-4; of Fig. 1;
Fig '5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 5--5 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 4;
I I B 1g. l is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 4:
F 1g, 8 is a detail View of one of the boxlockmg means, and
1 1g. 9 1s, a, deta l fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 9-9 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the draw ngs by reterence characters and more particularly to 111g.
the. box is formed from a single piece of cardboard or other suitable material. The bottom of the box is shown at 10, and the cardboard'ls scored along dotted lines 11 to form side walls12. These side walls 12 are.
scored along the dotted lines 13 to form friction locking. side members ll. and each of these friction locking side members is scored as at 15 to provide end locking flaps 16. The end walls of the box are shown at 17, and one of these end walls is,
scored as at to provide an end friction. locking flap 19. These end walls are further provided with end flaps 17. The opposite end wall 17 to the one provided with the flap 19; is scored as at 20 to provide hinged; flap or section 2i adapted to lie to.
the rear of. the last-mentioned end wall 17 when the box is in its folded position in a manner to be hereinafter more fully described. A third hinged flap 22 is providedand said flap is hinged to the flap 21 means of a stored line 23. The cover 24 of the box ishinged to the flap 22 by means of a scored line 25.'
The blank is cut as indicated by the reference. characters 26 and 27, to provide two flaps 28, and said flaps 28 are slotted as at 29, to provide of their being locked behind the flap 22 in a manner to be hereinafter set forth.
The blank is scored transversely as here tudinally as at 30. to provide side flaps 31 for the cover. and these side flaps 31 are slotted or cut as at 32 to provide projecting tongues 33. The cover is scored as at 34, and it is cut as indicated by the reference character 35, to provide. a tab or the like 36, which may be pressed outwardly from the cover and stand in a vertical display position when the box is used to display its contents. By means of the scored line 34:, a hinge section 37 is provided in order that said tab 36 may be bent upwardly. it being understood that the section 37 is bent downwardly against the inner face of the cover 24.. The cover is further scored as indicated by 38, to provide an end tab 39, which latter is provided with end wings 40, said tab being scored as indicated at ll, to permit of the wings 4O folding downwardly about the sides of the box to secure the cover in closed position.
To form the box fromthe blank heretofore described. the two end walls 17 are bent upwardly on the scored lines 15 and the end flaps 17' are bent inwardly until they coincide with the scored lines 11. The side walls 12 are now bent upwardly into engagement with the end flaps l7, and the locking side members 14: are bent on the scored lines 13 inwardly of the box. The locking flaps 16 are now bent into parallelism with the end walls 17 in order to form the friction lock of the box, after which the end flap 19 is bent inwardly of the box thus formed.
After this has been accomplished the two flaps 28 are bent to the rear of the section 22 and are engaged in interlocked position as indicated in Fig. 8, and this forms the rear wall of the cover. The cover is then positioned over the open side of the box and the end tab 39 is bent downwardly upon the scored line 38, and the wings 40 are bent upon the scored lines 41 into a position where they will pass between the ends of the members 12 and 14 of the box to secure the cover in closed position as more clearly shown in Fig. 6. I
The box has been described init formation and in its closed position, and to open the same and place it in its display position, the wings 40 are removed from the sides of the box and the cover is elevated to a vertical position. lVith the cover in the vertical positiom'the tongues 33 ot' the side walls ottliecover are adapted to pass through openings 50, as more clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 5. and when in this position the rear end of the box will be elevated and the box will occupy an inclined position, in which position its contents are readilydisplayed. \Vith the parts thus assembled, the cover is folded upon the scored line 34 and the display tab 36 is bent upwardly of the cover as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, in order that the printing thereon maybe displayed to the front of the box.
When it is desired to again close the box, the tongues are removed from the openings or cut-out portions 50 and the cover is free to move to the closed position shown in Fig. 1, and is retained in said closed position by means of the end wings 40 engaging between the two members 12, 14: which form the side walls of the box.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the present invention provides a folding carton in which all of the exposed surfaces of the carton which could be used for advertising purposes, are obtained from the same side of the blank from which the box is termed, thus permitting of the use ot stock which 15 finished on but one side, and
greatly reducing the cost of printing as well as the initial cost of the stock in the manufacture of these articles. Furthermore, a box which may be supported in display position is obtained, and said box is effectively mounted either in display position or in closed position as desired.
What is claimed is: I
l. A. blank for boxes, said blank comprising a suitably shaped sheet of material scored and cut to provide the body portion of a box and the body. portion of a cover, said blank being so scored as to hingedly connect the body portion of the box withthe body portion of the cover by three flaps, one of which forms one of the end walls of the box, another flap lying within the end wall of the cover, and the third flap forming means for aiding in supporting the box within the cover in display position.
2. A folding box comprising a box portion and a cover portion secured together by three integral flaps, one of which forms one of the end walls of the box, another of which lies within the end wall of the cover, and an intermediate flap, said intermediate flap being adapted to lie between the first and second mentioned flaps when the cover is in closed position on the box portion and to aid in supporting the box in inclined position within the cover of the box when said box is in display position.
3. A folding box comprising a blank scored to form a box portion and a lid portion, and a plurality of intermediate flaps hingedly connecting the lid portion to the box portion, one of said flaps forming the end wall of the box, another of said flaps lying within the end wall of the lid, and another flap adapted to lie between the two first-mentioned flaps when in closed positi'on'and adapted to serve, together with a plurality of tongues having interengagement with the box and carried by the lid, means by which the box is supported in inclined position relative to the lid for display purposes.
4. A folding carton comprising a box portion and a cover portion secured together by three integral flaps, one of which forms one of the end walls of the box, another of which flaps lies within the end wall of the cover, and an intermediate flap, said intermediate flap being adapted to lie between the first and second mentioned flaps when the cover is in closed position on the box portion, said intermediate flap forming the means by which the cover portion is foldable to a position to support the box in inclined display position.
