adapted to be formed from a single folded blank of material, the primar object of the invention being to provi e a carton which embodies novel features of construction whereby an interior shelf is provided for the support of the articles which are being packaged.

Further objects of the invention are; to provide a folding box which securely locks together without the necessity for using any glue or adhesive, which provides ample space or printed matter which may be printed upon the interior thereof so as to form a circular when opened, and in which the printed matter is necessarily brought to the attention-of the purchaser as he opens the box to obtain the articles packed therein.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the descri tion proceeds, the novel features thereof pointed out in the appended claims.

This paper box or carton has been more especially designed for the packaging of thumb tacks, although the construction may also be advanta eously employed for other articles of mere andise.

In describing the box certain parts of the blank will be arbitrarily designated as the top section, inner bottom section, outer bottom section, side sections, and end sections, although it will be understood that the box need not necessarily rest in any particular position, these terms bein merely used to designate the relative positlons of the parts.

The box is adapted to be formed from a single blank A of sheet material, such as shown by Fig. 1, the said blank being folded upon the various scorings a in forming the box.

The numeral 1 designates the top section of the box, 2 the inner bottom section of the box, and 3 the outer bottom section of the box the said bottom sections being connected to the top section by the side sections 4. The

end sections 5 are located at opposite ends of the top section 1 and are rovided with the tuck flaps 6. The outer ottom section 3 is provided with a sealing flap 7, while the inner bottom section 2 carries an article supporting shelf 8. This shelf 8 is connected to the inner bottom section 2 by a suitable side web 9, and is provided at the free edge thereof with a sealing ton e10.

The initial step in fol in formthe box consists in ben ing the article supporting shelf 8 upwardly over the inner bottom section 2 an inserting the sealing tongue 10 through the slit 11 which is formed in the blank A at a point adjacent the junction of the inner bottom section 2 and side section 4. (See Fig. 2). The articles of merchandise such. as the thumb tacks B are applied to the supporting shelf 8 which is arranged within the interior of the box so as to be spaced from the top and bottom thereof, preferably extending substantially diagonall between opposite corners of the box, as indicated by Fig. 8. In

whilethe engagement of the sealing tongue 10 with the slit 11 draws the opposite edge of the shelf 25 toward the section 2. The

blank is next folded along the "successive I .longitudinal score lines a as indicated by Figs. 3, 4, and (3. When the outer bottom section 3 is folded against the inner bottom section 2, as indicated by Fig. 5, the slit 12 at the junction of the section 3 and sealing flap 7 is brought into substantial registry with the before mentioned slit 11 and the sealing flap inserted through the said slit 12. This sealing flap 7 is next bent along holding the article supporting shelf 8 in Bill proper position within the interior of the box. The end flaps 5 may next be folded into position and the tuck flaps 6 at the extremities thereof inserted between the inner bottom section 2 and outer bottom section 3 so as to be frictionally engaged and held in position between the said members.

In order to open the box the sealing flap 10 must be first drawn out of the slit 13 and the blank unfolded in the reverse manner of that just described.

. The innerface of the blank may receive any desired printed matter either in the nature of an advertisement or of instructions for using the articles packed in the box, and as the box is opened, this printed matter is necessarily brought directly to the attention of the purchaser.

When the box has been opened to the extent indicated by Fig. 2, thethumb tacks B, or other articles secured to the interior supporting shelf 8 are brought plainly into view and can be removed at the pleasure of the purchaser. The box when opened to this extent can be very advantageously used for displaying the thumb tacks or other articles in an attractive manner, both the thumb tacks themselves "and the printed matter upon the inner face of the blank being plainly in sight.

When the box is completely folded, as indicated by Fig. 10, the arts are all securely locked together so t at the box can be subjected to rough handling without danger of opening up or coming apart. The

thumb tacks B are also held securely in position within the interior of the box so that they will not be jostled around and the points thereof caused to project through the boxes when the boxes are being transported or handled.

With this construction the article supporting shelf8 extends diagonally across the interior of the box so as to connect opposite corners thereof. This construction may be found advantageous for thp packaging of certain articles. 7

Having thus described the invention, what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A paper box formed from a single folded blank having a sealing tongue at one end thereof, said blank being bent upon a series of successive folds to provide inclosing sides and portions of the blank being caused tov overlap on one side of the box, said overlapping portions being provided with corresponding slits adapted to receive the sealing tongue, and an additional slit being provided in another side of the box to receive the free end of the sealing tongue, the said sealing tongue serving to lock the blank in a folded position.

2. A paper box formed from a single fold ed blank having an integral extension at one end thereof adapted to be folded within the interior of the box to provide an article supporting shelf, said integral extension having a sealing tongue at the end thereof and the blank being adapted to be bent upon a series of successive folds to provide inclosing walls surrounding the article supporting shelf, portions of the blank being caused to overlap upon one side of the box, and said overlapping portions bein 'formed with to receive the sealing tongue.

3. A paper box formed from a single folded blank and including an inner article supporting shelf provi ed with a sealing tongue, portions of the blank being caused to overlap in forming the box and said overlapping portions being provided with corresponding slits adapted to receive the sealing tongue, an additional slit being formed in the opposite side of the box to re- I ceive the extremity of the sealing tongue, the said sealing tongue serving to retain the article supporting shelf in proper position and also to lock the blank 1n a folded position,

4. A paper box formed from a single folded blank which has an interior article sup porting shelf at one end thereof and a sealing flap at the opposite end thereof, the article supporting shelf bein provided with a sealing tongue an portions of the blank bein .caused-to overlap" in forming the box, said adapted to receive the sealing tongue, anda slit be formed in the opposite side of the overlapping portime being formed with corresponding slits box to receive the extremity of the sealing ton e after it has been folded over the sealing flap.

5. A aper box formed from a single fold-- ed blan having a plurality of slits therein and formed wlth a top section, side sections, an inner bottom section, an outer bot tom section, and an article supporting shelf at one side of the inner bottom section, a sealing tongue being provided at the free edge of the article supporting shelf and the said sealing tongue being adapted to be threaded through the slits of the blank to lock the blank in a folded osition.

6. A aper box formed rom a single folded blan x said blank having a pluralityof slits therein and being formed with a top section, side sections, an inner bottom section, an outer bottom section, end sections provided with tuck flaps, a sealing flap at the free edge of the outer bottom section, and an article suppgrting shelf at the free edge of the inner ttom section, the free edge of the article supporting shelf being formed with a sealing tongue adapted to be threaded through the before mentioned slits and folded around the sealing flap to lock the blank in a folded position, the tuck flaps of the end sections bein inserted between the superposed inner an outer bottom sections.
