HARVEY ZELL, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN BOARD AND BOX (30., O1 DAYTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
PAPER BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1 1, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
5 similar reference characters indicate corre- Be it known that I, HARVEY ZELL, citizen 1 spending parts.
of the United States. residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin s, and to the figures of reference marker thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in paper boxes or receptacles, which may otherwise be termed a combination of a wrapper and box. The box or receptacle is not made into such until it is folded around the article which it is to contain.
It is especially designed for he reception of butter which leaves the hen vs of the butter-maker in oblong rectangular prints of a conventional size. In dispensing butter in retail quantities, each print is laid upon the wrapper and the wrapper is folded around the same, and when completed forms a box or receptacle which is substantially of a germ proof air-tight character and prevents any foreign substance entering the package.
While the wrapper or receptacle is especially designed for butter, it is equally available as a wrapper or container for other articles of commerce which are sufficiently solidified to permit the wrapper to be folded around such articles and made into a completed box or receptacle, the article serving the purpose of a former as in the case of butter prints.
Preceding a detail description of the invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, of which igure 1, is a lan view of the wrapper or blank before it is folded around the article and completed as a box or receptacle as in Fig. 4. ig. 2, is a perspective view showing the wrapper partly closed or folded around a butter print. Fig. 3, is a cross section of the wrapper after it has been completely folded around a block or print of butter and sealed. Fig. 4, is a pers ective view of the box or receptacle comp eted by being folded over and around the article.
In a detail description of the invention,
The blank or wrapper which subsequently becomes a completed box or receptacle, is substantially square in outline and. may be varied more or less from such form without materially affecting the utility of the same. VVhien so cut, the blank or wrapper is scored substantially as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. A bottom 1, a front side 3, a rear side 2 and a top closure flap 6 are provided. The top closure flap 6 has a marginal extension or tongue 9 which bends upon a score line and is adapted to be inserted on the inner side of the front side 3 and between said front side and the article 12 contained within the wrapper or box, said article being a print of butter. The top closure 6 is not joined to the two end wings or flaps 7 and 8 which form the inner top closure flaps and lie below said top closure 6. These wings '7 and 8 are severed from the top closure 6 by slits 11 which permit said wings to be folded in over the top of the article and below said top closure 6. The flaps 7 and 8 thus forming the inner top closures are joined to the end extensions of the rear side 2 and bend upon score lines 14. Joining the bot-- tom 1 are two fla' s 4 and 5 which turn up on'score lines against the ends of the article 12 placed upon the bottom 1 and form the two main end closures of the box. Joining the front and rear sides 3 and 2 and the main end closures 4 and 5 are rectangular folds 10 which are rovided with diagonal score lines 15 u )OIl which they are folded. These triangu ar folds 10 fold against the end closures 4 and 5 and thus reinforce or strengthen the end closures.
In a plying the wrapper and forming the box, t e article, for exam Ie, the print of butter 12, is placed upon t e bottom 1; the ends 4 and 5 are then bent to stand upright against the ends of the print of butter, or other article. The trian ular folds 10 which join the front side 3 an the end closures 4 and 5 are formed by elevating said front side 3 against the adjacent side of the print of butter. The trian ular folds are then folded in against the en closures 4 and 5. The rear side 2 is then bent upright against the rear side of the rint of butter thus servin as a form, and tfie triangular folds 1O whic join the said rear side with the end closures 4 and 5 are folded in against said end closures and against the folds which join the front 3 and said end closures 4 and 5, and which, as before stated, were first bent inwardly against said end closures 4 and 5. The folding of the triangular folds which join the rear side 2 with. the end closures 4 and 5, brings the wings or flaps '7 and 8 in a position to be folded inwardly on the score lines 14 and above the article serving as a form, to-Wit the print of butter 12. The top fold 6 is then folded over upon the score line which separates it from the rear side 2 and it thus incloses the inner closures consisting of the wings 7 and 8. The locking tongue 9 is bent along the score line separating it from the closure 6 and is inserted on the inside of the front side 3 and on the outside of the print of butter and the wrapper thus becomes a completely folded box. The tongue 9 in this position holds the closure 6 in position and also holds the end folds in position by engaging the outer edges of the wings 7 and S. In using this combination of wrapper and box'for butter, the same may be sealed by means of a seal 16 which is adhered to the edge of the closure 6 and extends over and is adhered to the front side 3 as shown in Fi 4.
From the foregoing description it wil be apparent that the article within the box or package is instrumental in maintaining the ends and the cover locked. For example,
the extensions or wings 7 and 8 being held in position beneath the cover are instrumental in holding the ends of the box or packa e closed, and the locking ton ue 9 being held between the article Within 518 package, and the inner side of the box or package serves to maintain the cover closed and the Wings 7 and 8 against the article, so that there are no separate means for locking the ends of the box. See Figs. 2 and 4:.
Having described my invention, I claim:
A aper box formed by folding a wrapper or b ank about an article inelosed therein, said box when so folded having four sides separated. by longitudinal score lines, two of said sides providing the front and rear of the box, and two of said sides providing the bottom and top of the box, the bottom of said box having end extensions separated therefrom by transverse score lines and forming the inner end closures of the box, the front and rear sides having end extensions separated therefrom by transverse score lines, and separated from the end extensions of the bottom by parallel score lines, each of the end extensions of said front and rear sides having a dia onal score line upon which they are folde against said inner end closures, Wings joining the end extensions of the rear side of the box and folding inwardly beneath the top of the box, said Wings bein disconnected from the top of the box, and a locking tongue joining the top closure of the box and separated therefrom by a longitudinal score line, said locking tongue being adapted to be i11- serted between the front side of the box and the article inclosed Within. said box, and to thereby maintain the box in its completed or folded shape while the article is contained therein.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
HARVEY ZELL.
