PATENT OFFICE This invention relates to improvements in containers and more particularly to display containers of the type in which merchandise is in view and accessible for sale.
It is the principal object of the present invention' to provide a display container which may be readily filled, easily assembled and closed, and quickly opened for display, and which is particularly suited for handling at any stage by unskilled labor.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a display container into which the contents may be readily introduced.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a display container which may be readily assembled and closed in compact condition with adequate protection of the contents.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a container which may be readily'set up for the display of the contents.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a display container having a high degree of rigidity and which is supported in an advantageous manner.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the annexed specification and claims.
The nature and characteristic features of the invention will be more readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which:
Fig. 1 is a view in perspective showing a container embodying the main features of the present invention set up in display condition;
Fig. 2 is a view in perspective showing the container in closed condition;
Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view showing the container set up in display condition;
Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal sectional view showing the container in closed condition and ready for shipping;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary rear elevational view showing certain details of the corner construction and the support of one of the rear comers of the box of the container;

Fig. 7 is a plan view of one of the blanks employed in connection with the container of the present invention and which when folded supplies a cover for the container and also a support for the container; and
Fig. .8 is a plan view of another blank employed for making the box portion of the container.
It will, of course, be understood that the description and drawings herein are illustrative merely, and that various modifications and changes may be made in the structure disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, in Fig. 7 there is shown the lank In which provides a cover and a support, this blank l0 preferably being formed from suitable paperboard or the like, and finished on one face thereof for printing if desired.
The blank l0 preferably includes a terminal flap H joined to a longitudinal or base forming panel i2 along a transverse crease line [3. A tongue M, swingable at the crease line I3 is preferably cut in the terminal flap II for purposes hereinafter explained. A support panel or leg portion I5 is joined to the longitudinal panel l2 along a transverse crease line 16, the support panel i6 having outwardly extending projecting portions or wings I! which extend beyond the remaining portions of the side edges of the blank I0. A container engaging panel 18 is joined to the support panel l5 along a transverse crease line IS. A display panel 20, which is adapted to receive printed advertising matter or the like, is joined to the container panel l8 along a transverse crease line 2|.
The blank 25 shown in Fig. 8 is preferably made of the same material as the blank shown in Fig. 7 and includes a central panel 26 which is adapted to form the bottom wall or floor of the container. The central panel 26 has rectangular side wall panels 21 joined thereto along longitudinal crease lines 28. An outside front end wall panel 29 is joined to the central panel 26 along a transverse crease line 30, a slit 3| being out along the crease line for the reception of the tongue H, as hereinafter more fully pointed out. Front end wall flaps 32 are joined to each of the side wall panels 21 along transverse crease lines 38 which are formed as extensions of the crease line 30. The front end wall flaps 32 have portions removed therefrom as at 84 for clearance as will hereinafter appear.
Each of the side wall panels 21 has a rear wall flap 35 Joined thereto along alined transverse crease lines 38. An inner flap portion 31 is connected to the central panel 26 along a transverse crease line 38, the crease line 38 being offset inwardly from the crease lines 36 to provide a slot 40 for the insertion of the display panel 20 and the container engaging panel I8 as hereinafter .pointed out. The side edges-39 of the inner flap portion 8? are preferably shaped so that the flap 87 does not bind against the inner faces of the side walls 2? when assembled.
The blank shown in Fig. 8 is assembled, preferably on a suitable box making machine. This is accomplished by bending the side walls 21 along the crease lines 28 to positions at right angles to the bottom panel'portion 26, bending the front flaps 82 along the crease lines 88 and bending the outer front end panel 29 along the crease line lid and gluing the end flaps 32 and the front end panel 29, .with the front end panel 29 outermost. At the same time the inner flap ill is bent along the crease line 38, the end wall panels 35 are bent along the crease lines 35 and the end wall panels 35 are secured to ach other, preferably by gluing.
If it is desired to have a finished surface showing at the inside of the upper rear end of the box, this may be accomplished by turning a portion of the flap ill back on itself as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 3. The turned down portion 31a of the flap 37! will then have an exposed finished surface and th exposed part of the container engaging panel is also has a finished sur= face.
It will be noted that a rigid box is thus provided and that the front wall consisting of the front wall flaps 32 and the front wall panel 29 will be capable of sustaining a relatively heavy load without deformation. It is not essential, however, that the specific form of box illustrated be employed, so long as the box has sufiicient rigidity and is provided with a slot as at all, or other suitable provisions for engagement by the support it. The bottom wall or panel 26 also is preferably stiffened by the provision of the flap 3i, and by reason of the stiifening there will be no tendency oi the bottom wall to sag intermediate the side walls and adjacent the rear end walls when the box is filled. The arrangement of thei'lap ill with respect to the slot it and the spacing thereof from the rear wall panels 35 facilitate the insertion of the support.
The blank Hl shown in Fig. '7 is inserted in the slot all and between the flap 3? and the end wall panel 235 with the finished face forward. This is effected by introducing the display panel portion 2d into the slot it from below and sliding the blank ii] upwardly to a position where the projecting portions ill engage the bottom 26 of the box beyond the ends of the slot dd.
When it is desired to close the container for shipping the display panel portion 2b is bent forwardly along the crease line iii to extend over the open top of the box. The blank if] is bent first along the crease line it to position the support panel i contiguous to the outer face of the rear end wall 35 and base panel portion 52 is then bent forwardly so as to overlie the display panel 29. The terminal flap ii is bent along the crease line it and inserted inside the lower end wall 32 of the box to the position shown in Fig. 4.
The box and its contents are then ready to be shipped, the contents being well protected by the display panel 20 and the panel portion i2. When it is desired to use the display container the panel portion 82 is elevated and the panel portions i2 and it ar swung around the axis provided by the crease lines It and it. The panel portion 62 is bent with respect to the support panel it along the crease line it and the tongue it is bent upwardly and inserted within the slit ti as shown assaaee in Fig. 3. The display panel 28 may then be bent bachwardly to the desired angle to advantageously advertise the contents of the container.
It will noted that the rigidity of the box aids in, maintaining the attractive condition of the contents whether the same is wholly or parially filled and that the provision of the slot 3B and the flap 3? permit of the insertion of the supporting and covering structure after the box has been filled. The manipulation required to place the container in the desired condition for shipping or for display, as required, is very simple and obvious to the user.
I claim:
1. A. container including a box having a bot= tom wall, side walls, and front and rear end walls, said rear'end wall consisting of end flaps folded along upwardly extending crease lines disposed in a plane normal to the bottom wall and secured together, said bottom wall having a transversely extending slot at the rear end thereof, the forward margin of said slot being spaced forwardly from the plane of said crease lines, and a separable support for said box having a portion extending through said slot.
2. A container including a box having a bottom wall, side walls, and front and rear end walls. said rear end wall consisting of end flaps folded along upwardly extending crease lines disposed in a plane normal to the bottom wall and secured together, a rear flap extending upwardly from said bottom wall along a crease line spaced forwardly from said plane to provide a transversely extending slot, and a separable support for said box having a portion extending through said slot.
3. A container including a box having a bottom wall, side walls, and front and rear end walls, said rear end wall consisting of end flaps folded along upwardly extending crease lines disposed in a plane normal to the bottom wall and secured together, a rear flap extending upwardly from. said bottom wall along a crease line spaced forwardly from the plane of said crease lines to provide a transversely extending slot, the edges of said flap being spaced inwardly from said side walls, and a separable support for said box having a portion extending through said slot.
4. A container including a box of folded sheet material having a bottom wall and front and rear end walls, said rear wall being provided with a vertical open ended passageway extending the width of the box, and a separable cover and support section for said box, said section being formed from fiat sheet material and having a box engaging panel slidable into position in said passageway for holding the rear end of the box in elevated position, a leg panel of a single thickness of material providing a leg for sustaining the weight of the box, said leg panel having thereon a supporting projection in engagement with the under side of said box and limiting the upward movement of said leg panel, said leg panel being connected to said box engaging panel along a transverse crease line, a display panel extending upwardly from the box engaging panel and connected thereto along a transverse crease line, a base portion joined to said leg panel along a transverse crease line and extending forwardly to the front end of the box, and interengaging means on the front end of the base portion and on the bottom of the box for holding the bottom of the box and the base portion in fixed angular relationship, said leg panel and said base portion being of a combined length to cover the rear and the top of the box and swingable to covering position.
5. A container including a box of folded sheet material having a bottom wall and front and rear end walls, said rear wall being provided with a vertical open ended passageway extending the width of the box, and a separable cover and support section for said box, said section being formed from fiat sheet material and having a box engagin panel portion slidable into position in said passageway for holding the rear end of the box in elevated position, a leg panel of a single thickness of material providing a leg for sustaining the weight of the box, said leg panel having on opposite edges thereof marginal supporting projections extending sidewise beyond the ends of said passageway in engagement with the underside of said box and limiting the upward movement of said leg panel, said leg panel being connected to said box engaging panel along a transverse crease line, a display panel extending upwardly from the box engaging panel and connected thereto along a transverse crease line, a base portion joined to said leg along a transverse crease line and extending forwardly to the front end of the box, and interengaging means on the front end of the base portion and on the bottom of the box for holding the bottom of the box and the base portion in fixed angular relationship, said leg panel and said base portion being of a combined length to cover the rear and the top of the box and swingable to covering position.
6. A container including a box of folded sheet material having-a bottom wall and front and rear end walls, said rear wall being provided with a vertical open ended passageway extending the width of the box, and a separable cover and support section for said box, said section being formed from flat sheet material with parallel side edges and having a box engaging panel slidalble into position in said passageway for hold-.

A container including a box of folded sheet material having a bottom wall and front and rear end walls, said rear wall being provided with a vertical open ended passageway extending the width of the box, and a separable cover and support section for said box, said section being formed from flat sheet material and having a box engaging panel slidable into position in said passageway for holding the rear end of the box in elevated position, a leg panel of a single thickness of material providing a leg for sustaining the weight of the box, said leg having thereon a supporting projection in engagement with the under side of said box and limiting the upward movement of said leg panel, said leg panel being connected to said box engaging panel along a transverse crease line, a display panel extending upwardly from the box engaging panel and connected thereto along a transverse crease line, a base portion joined to said leg along a transverse creaseline and extending forwardly to the front end of the box, and a tongue on the front end of the base portion for engagement with a slot at 40 the lower part of the box at the front for holding the bottom of the box and the base portion in fixed angular relationship, said leg panel and said base portion being of a combined length to cover the rear and the top of the box and swingable to covering position.
