7 Claims. (Cl. 20644) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A carton having an upper portion which is foldable to form a nest for receiving a bottom portion of another similar carton without interfering with the contents of the carton.
This invention relates to containers or cartons, and more particularly to nestable display cartons.
Packaging, as we know it today, is an important factor in merchandising products. An eye catching carton artistically displayed normally enhances sales, while a poorly designed package ineptly displayed, many times discourages the consumers from buying the merchandise.
The cartons of this invention are designed to produce the former effect, that of enhancing sales by providing cartons which are both artistically and usefully designed. Realistic in that it provides a carton suitable for packaging the merchandise, while further providing in the top of the carton, a recess designed to hold like cartons therein permitting nesting of the cartons one on top of another, whereby an aestheticspace saving display is created. The recess formed in the top of the carton also provides a bill board for carrying advertising or product identification information. The carton thus formed, acts in a two-fold fashion. It creates a suitable container for the merchandise while acting as a display holder. Each time a single carton is removed. from a column of containers, a bill board integral with the next carton or container is revealed. Y
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, the following description and annexed drawings setting forth in detail certain illustrative embodiments of the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but a few of the various forms in which the principle of this invention may be employed.

Briefly stated, this invention is in a nestable display carton formed from a piece of foldable material, e.g. stifi' paper or cardboard. The carton has a front panel of predetermined width, a rear panel having the same width as the front panel, but having a greater depth, a pair of slide panels, a bottom, and a top foldable to a closed position intermediate the top and bottom marginal edges of the rear panel. The top is foldable along a first fold 3,334,732 Patented Aug. 8, 1967 line common to the top and front panel. A display panel, secured to the top marginal edge of the rear panel, is reversely foldable over the inner exposed surface of the rear panel along a second fold line common to the rear panel and the display panel. Each of the side walls has a first score or fold line, which extends from its top rear corner diagonally to a point where it intersects the first fold line, and defines a fold line common with the side wall. A second score line extends diagonally across each side panel from a point between its top edge corners to the intersection point. The first and second scores on each side wall, define front and rear gusset portions. The front gusset portions are each foldable along a fold line common with the edges of the top, respectively. The triangular gusset portions are designed to bend around the scores which define them, to a position against the inner surfaces of the remaining portions of the side walls, when the top is closed.
Referring generally to FIGS. I6, and more particularly to FIG. 2 of the annexed drawings, there is shown a blank, generally indicated at 5, for folding to a nestable display carton, generally indicated at 6 (FIG. 1). Blank 5 is made from a piece of foldable material, preferably cardboard and will usually have information printed on the outer face thereof. The blank 5 includes a front panel 7 of predetermined width, a rear panel 8 having preferably the same width, but a greater depth, a pair of side panels 9 and 10, respectively, a bottom generally indicated at 15, and a top, generally indicated at 16.
A display panel 17 is secured to the top marginal edge 18 of the rear panel 8, and defines a fold line at its juncture therewith. The display panel 17 is reversely folded to cover the inner exposed surface 19 (FIG. 4) of the rear panel 8, when the top 16 is closed, to provide a bill board for advertising matter or other information. Panel 17 may be glued into its ultimate position over the inner exposed surface 19 prior to assembly of the carton, if desired.
Any suitable means, e.g. bottom 15, may be used to close the bottom open end 20 (FIG. 3) of the carton 6. In the preferred embodiment, a bottom panel 21 with a tuck-in flap 22, coacts with a pair of oppositely disposed folding side flaps 23 and 24, respectively, to seal the bottom open end 20. The bottom panel 21 is secured to the bottom marginal edge 25 of the front panel 7 and defines a fold line at its juncture therewith. The tuck-in fl-ap 22 is secured to the marginal edge 26 of the bottom panel 21, and defines a fold line at its juncture therewith. The tuck-in flap 22 is designed to confront the inside surface of rear panel 8 adjacent the bottom end 27 thereof as the bottom panel 21 is closed. The folding flap 23 is secured to the bottom marginal edge 28 of the side panel 9, and defines a fold line at its juncture therewith. The folding flap 24 is secured to the bottom marginal edge 29 of the side wall 10 and defines a fold line at its juncture therewith.
A glue fiap or lap 35 is secured to the marginal edge 36 of the side panel 10, and defines a fold line at its juncture therewith. When the carton 6 is folded to form a tubular shape, the outer surface of the glue flap 35 lies adjacent the inner surface of the rear panel edge 37, and is designed to be secured therealong by any suitable securing means, e.g. glue or staples.
A top 16 is formed from a top panel or cover 38 secured to the top marginal edge 39 of the front panel 7, and defines a fold line at its juncture therewith. A tuckin flap 40 is secured to the marginal edge 41 of the top covers 38 and defines a fold line at its juncture therewith.
In the illustrated embodiment, side panel 10 is secured along the side marginal edge 45 of the front panel 7, and defines a fold line at its juncture therewith, and side panel 9 is disposed between the front and rear panels,
being secured to the opposing side marginal edge 55 of front panel 7, and side marginal edge 56 of rear panel 8, respectively, and defining fold lines therealong. Gussets 42 and 43 are formed in the top ends of side panels 10 and 9, respectively, adjacent top panel 38. Gussets 42 and 43 are similar, therefore, their description will be given in reference to gusset 42 formed in side panel 10. In the preferred embodiment gusset 42 includes a pair of triangular gusset portions 46 and 47, respectively.
The front gusset 46 is bounded by the top marginal edge 48 of the side panel 10, the fold line 49, which is common to the top cover 38 and is an extension of fold line 55, and a score or fold line 50 which extends from a point intermediate the top corners 51 and 52, respectively, of the side panel 10, to a point 53 where the fold lines 39 and 4 9, respectively, intersect.
The rear gusset portion 47 is bounded by the same marginal edge 48, the fold line 50 common to gusset portion 46, and the score or fold line 54 which extends from the point 52 diagonally across the side panel 10 to the intersection point 53.
In assembling the carton, the foldable blank is first folded along fold lines 36, 45, 55 and 56 (FIG. 5). The tuck-in flap or lap 35 (FIG. 4) is then secured adjacent the marginal edge 37 of panel 8 by any suitable fastening means, e.g. glue or staples to form a tubular shaped carton (FIG. 3). The folding flaps 23 and 24 are then folded inwardly along the fold lines 28 and 29, respectively, to close a portion of the open end 20. The bottom cover 21 is then folded, along the fold line 25, over the folding flaps 23 and 24, and the tuck-in flap 22 is tucked in between the folding flaps and the adjacent marginal edge 27 of the rear panel 8 and rests thereagainst to close the bottom end 20.
The top is sealed by pushing inwardly the top or cover panel 38 towards the back panel 8, which causes the top 38 to fold along fold line 39. As the top 38 is pressed inwardly the gussets 46 and 47, respectively, and gussets 46a and 47a, respectively, fold along their respective score lines, e.g. score lines 49, 50, and 54. The triangular gusset portions bend around their scores and position themselves against the inner surfaces of the remaining portions of the side walls, when the top cover 38 is brought to its closed position (FIGS. 4 and 5).
The tuck-in flap 40 is folded along the fold line 41 and rests against the adjacent inner surface of the rear panel 8 as the top 38 is closed. When in a closed position, the top 38, preferably, lies in a. plane which is at right angles to the plane of the rear panel 8. The display or bill board panel 17 is then folded over the exposed surface 19 of the back panel 8.
The recess formed in the top of the carton 6 permits a plurality of like cartons to be stacked one on top of the other (FIG. 6), whereby the cartons are conveniently displayed. In a nested column, such as shown in FIG. 6, a bill board panel is always on display as each carton is removed from the column by a customer.
Thus there has been provided, a nestable display carton which is suitable for packaging merchandise therein, and which may be used in combination with a plurality of like cartons, to form a display thereof.
Other modes of applying the principle of this invention may be employed instead of those specifically set forth above, changes being made as regards the details herein disclosed, provided the elements set forth in any of the following claims, or the equivalent of such be employed.
It is, therefore, particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed as the invention:
1. A blank for a nestable display carton comprising a piece of material foldable to form a carton, including:
(a) a front panel having a predetermined width and height;
(b) a rear panel having the same Width as the front panel and having greater height than the front panel;
(c) a pair of side panels;
(d) a bottom; and (e) a top foldable to a closed position intermediate the top and bottom marginal edges of the rear panel, I
the top being foldable along a first fold line common to the top and the front panel;
(f) an integral display panel having three free edges and reversely foldable over the inner exposed surface of the rear panel along a second fold line common to the rear panel and the display panel;
(g) each of the side Walls including a gusset extending between the side Wall and the top, and having;
(h) a first score line which extends from its top rear corner diagonally to a point where it intersects the first fold line, and defining a fold line common with the side wall, and
(i) a second score line which extends from a point between its top edge corners to the intersection point to provide front and rear gusset portions;
the front gusset portion being foldable along a fold line common with the edges of the top, the triangular gusset portions designed to bend along the scores defining them as the top is closed, to positions against the inner surfaces of the remaining portions of the side walls when the top is closed.
2. A nestable display carton comprising:
(a) a front panel having a predetermined width and height;
(b) a rear panel having the same width as the front panel and having a greater height than the front panel;
(c) a pair of side panels;
(d) a bottom;
(e)a top foldable to a closed position intermediate the top and bottom marginal edges of the rear panel, the top being foldable along a first fold line common to the top and front panel;
(f) an integral display panel having three free edges reversely foldable over the inner exposed surface of the rear panel along a second fold line common to the rear panel and the display panel;
(g) each of the side walls including a gusset extending between the side wall and the top, and having;
(h) a first score line which extends from its top rear corner diagonally across the side Wall to a point where it intersects the first fold line, and defining a fold line common with the side Wall, and;
(i) a second score line which extends from a point between its top edge corners to the intersection point to provide front and rear gusset portions;
the front gusset portion being foldable along a fold line common with the edges of the top, the triangular gusset portions designed to bend around the scores defining them as the top is closed, to positions against the inner surfaces of the remaining portions of the side walls when the top is closed.
3. The nestable display carton of claim 2, wherein the top in closed position, lies in a plane which is at right angles to the plane of the rear panel.
4. The nestable display carton of claim 3, wherein the display panel when folded against the exposed surface of the rear panel, extends from the top marginal edge of the rear panel to the plane of the top when the top is in a closed position.
5. A BLANK FOR A NESTABLE DISPLAY CARTON COMPRISING A PIECE OF MATERIAL FOLDABLE TO FORM A CARTON, INCLUDING: (A) A FRONT PANEL HAVING A PREDETERMINED WIDTH AND HEIGHT; (B) A REAR PANEL HAVING THE SAME WIDTH AS THE FRONT PANEL AND HAVING GREATER HEIGHT THAN THE FRONT PANEL; (C) A PAIR OF SIDE PANELS; (D) A BOTTOM; AND (E) A TOP FOLDABLE TO A CLOSED POSITION INTERMEDIATE THE TOP AND BOTTOM MARGINAL EDGES OF THE REAR PANEL, THE TOP BEING FOLDABLE ALONG A FIRST FOLD LINE COMMON TO THE TOP AND FRONT PANEL; (F) AN INTEGRAL DISPLAY PANEL HAVING THREE FREE EDGES AND REVERSELY FOLDABLE OVER THE INNER EXPOSED SURFACE OF THE REAR PANEL ALONG A SECOND FOLD LINE COMMON TO THE REAR PANEL AND THE DISPLAY PANEL; (G) MEANS OF THE SIDE WALLS INCLUDING A GUSSET EXTENDING BETWEEN THE SIDE WALL AND TOP, AND HAVING; (H) A FIRST SCORE LINE WHICH EXTENDS FROM ITS TOP REAR CORNER DIAGONALLY TO A POINT WHERE IT INTERSECTS THE FIRST FOLD LINE, AND DEFINING A FOLD LINE COMMON WITH THE SIDE WALL, AND (I) A SECOND SCORE LINE WHICH EXTENDS FROM A POINT BETWEEN ITS TOP EDGE CORNERS TO THE INTERSECTION POINT TO PROVIDE FRONT AND REAR GUSSET PORTIONS; THE FRONT GUSSET PORTION BEING FOLDABLE ALONG A FOLD LINE COMMON WITH THE EDGES OF THE TOP, THE TRIANGULAR GUSSET PORTIONS DESIGNED TO BEND ALONG THE SCORES DEFINING THEM AS THE TOP IS CLOSED, TO POSITIONS AGAINST THE INNER SURFACES OF THE REMAINING PORTIONS OF THE SIDE WALLS WHEN THE TOP IS CLOSED.
