BY W QQ,
Patented Jan. 3, i950 Earl B. Whitehead, Norwich, Conn, assignor to Atlantic Carton Corporation, Norwich, Conn., a corporation of New York Application January 9, 1948, Serial No. 1,352
2 Claims. (01. 22933) I This invention relates to cartons and is directed more particularly to improvements in a pro- .formed carton blank arranged and adapted for folding to provide a receptacle.
The principal objects of the invention are the provision of a carton blank which is constructed and arranged to be readily and easily set up to provide a receptacle which is not only strong and durable but one which has a closure adapted for swinging between open and closed position thereby making the contents of the receptacle accessible when in open position. At the same time, when the closure is in closed position the receptacle is adequately closed.
The blank may be made in various sizes and shapes for forming receptacles for numerous and various purposes and in general is adapted for wide uses.
with the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel feataures of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a pe ctive view of a receptacle formed according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to that of Fig. l with the closure of the receptacle in open position; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a blank adapted to be formed to provide the receptacle shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Referring to the drawings more in detail, the invention will be fully described.
The blank 2 of the invention as shown in Fig. 3 has a bott m wall section 4 to the longitudinal ed es 6 of which are hinged side walls 8. Inner upper wall sections it are hinged to the longitudinal edges of the side walls 8 as at 12.
Cut-outs i 4 are provided at the outermost edges of the upper wall sections ll.
Outer end walls It are hinged at II to opposite ends of the lower wall 4 and pairs of inner end wall sections 20 and 2| are hinged at 22 to the ends of the side walls I. p The sections It may be provided with interlocking notches 2|.
Slots 24 are provided along the lines II for receiving tabs as will appear.
Outer upper wall sections or closures 2i and 21 are hinged at 2| to the sections II and flaps II andl2arehlngedatlltothesections2t.
- 2 Tabs 28 and It are hinged at 40 and 42 to opposite sides of the sections 20 and 22.
The blank may be formed to provide sections oi! various sizes and shapes thereby to form receptacles of various sizes and shapes and said blank may be formed from cardboard or someother suitable material.
In setting up the blank the side walls 8 are swung upwardly and the members 2| are swung inwardly with the notches 2 I thereof brought into interlocking engagement.
Wall I6 is swung upwardly against members 2i, the upper sections i 0 are swung inwardly and end wall it adjacent member 2| is brought down thereover so that member 21 overlies members It and then members 36 are inserted in slots 24.
Then members 20 are swung inwardly and member l6 adjacent thereto is swung upwardly. Members 26 and 32 may be superposed on the upper walls ID to close the carton with members 38 in the slots 24 as shown in Fig. 1. Or the parts may assume the open position shown in Fig. 2.
By means of the novel construction closure 32 may be swung from closed to open position so that the contents of the receptacle are accessible while the receptacle is held in shape by the members It, 21, 30 and 36.
The receptacle is adapted for many and various uses and may be made in numerous sizes and shapes.
In some cases the notches 2 i may be eliminated and the members 20 may be omitted if desired.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A folding blank for forming into a box comprising, a single sheet of material having a bottom wall section and side walls hinged at their longitudinal edges to longitudinal edges thereof for swinging upwardly relative to said bottom walls, inner end members hinged to opposite end of said side walls for swinging inwardly therefrom to form end walls adjacent said side walls.
inner upper wall members having hinge connecmeagre tions with outer longitudinal edges of said side walls for swinging inwardly relative thereto into relatively parallel position providing an upper wall, said hinge connections provided with longitudinal slots terminating inwardly of opposite ends of said side walls, outer end walls hinged to opposite transverse ends of said lower wall section for overlying said inner end members and having outer upper wall sections hinged thereto for overlying opposite end portions of said inner upper wall members, flaps hinged to said outer upper wall sections for overlying adjacent intermediate portions of said inner upper wall menibers having tabs at opposite sides thereof receivable in said slots for holding said outer upper wall sections and flaps on said inner upper wall members, said flaps having relatively overlapping portions at ends thereof disposed over intermediate portions of said inner upper wall members.
2. A folding blank for forming into a box comprising, a single sheet of material having a bottom wall section and side walls hinged at their longitudinal edges to longitudinal edges thereof for swinging upwardly relative to said bottom wall, inner end members hinged to opposite ends of said side walls for swinging inwardly therefrom to form end walls adjacent said side walls. inner upper wall members having hinge connections with outer longitudinal edges of said side walls for swinging inwardly relative thereto into relatively parallel position providing an upper wall,
said hinge connections provided with longitudinal slots terminating inwardly of opposite ends of said side walls. outer end walls hinged to opposite transverse ends of said lower wall section for overlying said inner end members and having outer upper wall sections hinged thereto for overlying opposite end portions of said inner upper wall members. flaps hinged to said outer upper wall sections for overlying adjacent intermediate portions of said inner upper wall members having tabs at opposite sides thereof receivable in said slots for holding said outer upper wall sections and flaps on said inner upper wall members, said flaps having relatively overlapping portions at the end thereof and disposed intermediate portions of said inner upper wall members, and inner portions of said inner upper wall members being cut away adjacent corresponding ends thereof.
