FOLDING BOX.
Application filed March 5, 1919. Serial No. 280,771.
T0 @ZZ 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ARTHUR EBER, a citizen ot the United States, and a resident oit' the city ot Chicago, county ot' Cook, and State oit Illinois, have invented certain new and usetul Improvements in Folding boxes, ot which the following is a specification.
lVIy invention relates to improvements in folding boxes and has for its object the provision of an improved construction ot this character which may be readily tolded into iiat condition or distended into box form and securely locked in said box form.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
rPhe invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed. y
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which, i
Fig. 1, is a plan view of the blank trom which the box is made,
Fig. 2, a perspective view ot the completed box shown in distended and closed position,
Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 2, With the front portion of the box broken away,
Fig. 4, a longitudinal section of the box taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 5, and
Fig. 5, a transverse section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4. i
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a suitable blank formed of box board material or the like, and comprising portions (S, 7 and S adapted to form the front and 'rear sides and ends ot a tubular box body open at both top and bottom, a flap 10 being provided at the edge ot' portion 6 for securing the portion 9 in place to form said body, as will be readily understood. The bottoin portion 11 is formed integrally with the bottom edge ot the side wall 6 and is provided at its tree edge with a flap 12 1nsertable within the box body. Side flaps 13 are provided at the ends of the bottom portion 11 and are also insertable within the box body. The adjoining edges of flaps 12 and 13 are provided with teeth or serrations 13 adapted to interlock with each other when said flaps are folded and insertedlwithin the box body, forming a connection between said flaps adapted to stiften the box construction and tending to prevent with- 4box and the teeth 13 drawal of the bottom member 11. A to member 14 is formed integrally with the top edge of the side wall 6, and is provided at its free edge with a flap 15 having a tongue thereon split into portions 16 and 16 by a central slit or cnt 17. The end walls and 9 are provided with top flaps 18 adapted to l'old inwardly over the open top o'i: the box body under the cover 14. Slits 8 and 12 are provided respectively in the front wall 8 and the `flap 12 to receive the portions 16 and 16 of said split tongue, said slits being arranged to register with each other when the box is arranged in distended forni to receive said tongue portions. The box is prepared for use simply by folding the parts on the creased line between the walls 7 and S and attaching the flap 10 to the Wall 9, when the box is ready for shipment. In use, the body ot' the box is rst distended and the bottom 11 folded inwardly into closing position with the flaps 12 and 13 inserted within the body of the interlocked with each other. Then after the proposed contents of the box have been placed therein the iaps 18 are folded inwardly thereover and a cover member 14 folded over said flaps 18, the tongue portions 16 and 16 being inserted within the box body outside of the flap 12 and inside of the lap 8, one of said tongue portions being projected outwardly through the slit 8 and the other being projected inwardly through the slit 12', as shown, said tongue portions interlocking` with said slits to lock the box securely iii closed condition. The box thus formed is very strong and rigid in construction, and is very Securely locked against accidental opening thereof.
The terms top, bottoni, sides, etc., are used in a relative sense, with refe-rence to the position in which the box is illustrated, but obviously are interchangeable terms. For instance, it the box is turned over, the part which I have called the bottom will become the top, etc., so that it should be understood that the terms used refer to the box when in the position illust-rated in the drawings.
lVhile I have illustrated and described lie preferred form of construction Afor carrying my invention into effect, this is capable ot variation and modification without departing trom the spirit ot the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of` such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A folding box comprising a box body; a bottoni for said body having flaps at the ends and sides thereof, insertable therein, the adjoining edges of the end iiaps and one of said side flaps being provided with interlocking teethj a. top for said body having a flap insertable in said body; and a tongue formed integral with said top flap adapted when said body is distended to be inserted through a slitl formed in one of said side flaps for securing the top in closed position, substantially as described.
2. A folding box comprising a box body, having side and end flaps; a continuous foldable strip formed integral with one of saidl side iiaps adapted to be folded over the other of said. side flaps when said box is distended; a slit formed in said strip and the adjacent side flap; a cover for said box formed integral with one of said side flaps; and a slitted tongue formed integral with said cover, said tongue being inserted between said strip4 and the said adjacent side flap, one portion of said tongue being inserted outwardly through the slit formed in said strip and the other portion of said tongue being inserted inwardly through the slit formed in the adjacent side flap, substantially as` described.
8; A folding box comprising a box body, having side and end flaps.; a continuous foldable strip formed integral with one of said side flaps adapted to be folded over the. other of said side flaps when said box is distended; a slit formed in said strip and the adjacent side flap; a cover for said box formed integral, with one of the said side flaps; slitted tongue formed integral with said cover, said tongue being inserted between said strip and the said adjacent side flap, one portion of said tongue being inserted outwardly through the slit formed .in said strip andthe other portion of said tongue being inserted inwardly through the slit formed in t-he adjacent side flap, and interlocking means formed in one ofI the side edges of each of said end flaps and one of'said side iaps, substantially as described.
fl. A folding box comprising a box body normally open at top and bottom and having the four sides thereof foldable into flat condition; a bottom for said box body formed integrally therewith and having flaps on its side Opposite its juncture with onev of said sides and at the ends thereof insertable in said box body, the adjoining edges of said flaps having interlocking teeth; and a top for said body fo-rmed integrally therewith and having a split tongue on its side opposite its juncture with said body, there being slits in the corresponding body side and bottom Hap adapted to receive the portions of said tongue, substantially as described. i
5. A. folding box comprising a box body consisting of four consecutive side walls permanently secured together in box form capable of folding at opposite corners and collapsing into folded condition; a bottom member on the lower edge of one of said side walls provided with a flap at its free edge adapted to enter said box body when distended; a top member on the upper edge of said one sidewall provided' with al flap at its free edge adapted to. enter said box body when diste'nded; and a split tongue on one of said flaps, said bottom vwall flap and the front wall of said box body being provided with slits adapted and arrranged to receive the portions of said tongue, substantially as described.
6. A folding box comprising a box body consisting of four consecutive side walls permanently secured together in box form capable of folding at opposite corners and collapsing into folded condition; a bottom member on the lower edge of one of said side walls provided with a flap at its free edge adapted to enter said box body when distended; a top member on the upper edge of saidv one side wall provided with a. tongue at its free edge adapted tof-enter registering slits formed in said box body and the Hap` of said bottom member when distended; and interlocking means on said flaps, substantially as described.
.ln testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARTHUR WEBER.
