UNITED Star-Es EDWARD E. PINKERTON, or '.cH'rcAGo, ILLINOIS.
Box.
Applicationled : rune 29, 1923. serial No. 648,414. 4
T 0 all whom, t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. PINKEP.-
TON, a citizen of the United States, and a' resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following a specification. y
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in boxes, and more particularly to folded cardboard boxes, and has for an object to provide such boxes withl reinforced or multiple walls and with lace means extending `from said walls and providing an artistic superpo-sed lace effect, all the parts of said box being stamped from a sheet of material to form a single integral pattern or blank which is folded into the required shape. 2o
Other objects will appear hereinafter.. The invention consists inthe combinations and arrangements of .parts hereinafter de blank stamped out from a sheet of material;
Fig. 2 is a top view of the folded box with the cover in open position;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section, taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4.- is a vertical cross section taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings, I have shown one form of my invention which is produced by stamping a single and integral blank or pattern from a sheet of suitable material, such as cardboard or the like, to form the required box blank as shown in Fig. 1. This blank comprises a main portion (M) forming the exterior of the box, and a reinforcing portion (It) forming the inner part ofthe box, when the parts are folded along the dotted lines shown in Fig. 1 and the fastening means are arranged in position.
The main portion, or exterior portion comprises a bottom 11 with two side walls 12 and 13 thereon, a top member 14 extending from the side wall 12 and having a flap 15 to engage in slot 15 provided in side wall 13. Two end walls 16 extend from the bottom 11 and have their end parts 17 doubled over inwardly thereon, and are provided with short sideflap's 18 which extend lin the finished box.
along the inside of the side walls 12 and 13 A lace member 19 is cut out from each portion 17, yhaving its edge indented or trimmed in the .manner of' lace,
and extends inwardly from vthe upper doubled edge of each end wall, and Acorner flaps 20, which are cut from the sides of said ends walls and flaps, extend from the side walls and vare tucked in between'the doubled` portions of said end walls..v
The inner 'or reinforcing portions (R) of the box comprises a' bot-tom member 21 Aand two side members .22 and 23 extending therefrom, the member 23 extending fromy the main sidewall 13and thememberI 22 con-l .taining a narrow lstrip orV liap 22ywhich is bent over outwardly and is fastened tothe upper part of said wall 12, asv by the use of adhesivematerialprovided on said strip.
Two end members'26 extend fromsaid mem-` ber 21 and have .tongues v'27 cut out therefrom which are extended` inwardly through members 26 are placed on the inside of portions 17 of the wall member 16. Lace members 29, which have their edges indented or trimmed similar to the lace members 19, are provided on the outer ends of members 26 and are extended inwardly into the box, the lace members 19 being folded thereover and therewith forming superposed or multiple layers of lace-means on the box, thus providing the much desired and artistic doubled or multiple lace effect, without the necessity ofl pasting additional lace means inthe box as is the case in the usual present construction, thereby lessening the amount of work involve-d tomake the box and therefore lessening its cost of production.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is'capable of slots 28 in wall portions 17 when'saidl end f variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the. invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire Y to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims. p
Having described my invention what I claim as new and 'desire to secure by Letters ing from said end wall, a reinforcing p0rtion bent inward from said main portion and having' an end member inside of said end wall, and lace means on sai-d end member extended beneath said lace member to form a superposed lace effect.
9,. A box consisting of a single blank of material` and comprising a main vportion providing outer end walls having the upper parts doubled over inwardly, a lace member cut out and extending inwardly from the bent top part of each end wall, a reinforcing portion extending from said main portion and folded inward thereof and having end members placed at the inner sides of said end walls, and lace members bent inwardly from said end members and folded onto the rst said lace member forming superposed lace means therewith.
3. A box having its parts integral and i comprising a main outer portion and an inner reinforcing portion, said main portion containing bottom and side walls and a lid extending from one of said side walls, said reinforcing portion extending from the other side wall and forming inner bottom, side and end members, lace Vmembers extending inwardly from said end members, end walls on said main portion doubled over inwardly, corner flaps extending from said side walls and tucked between the doubled parts of said end walls, and lace members cut out from said doubled end walls and folded Vinward being doubled over the first said lace members with the lace edges slightly above the lace edges of the first said lace members to form a multiple 'lace effect.
4. A box consisting of a single blank of material and comprising` a main outer portion and an inner reinforcing portion, said main portion containing bottom and side walls and a lid extending from one of Said side walls and having a flap on its outer end, said reinforcing portion extending from the other side wall and forming a slot therewith for receiving said flap, said reinforcing portion. also forming inner bottom, side and end members, tongues on said end members, lace members extending inwardly from said vend members, end walls on said main Vportion doubled over inwardly and having slots to receive said tongues, side flaps on said end walls directed under the side walls of the main portion, corneriiaps extending from said side walls and tucked between the doubled parts of said end walls, and lace members cut ont from said doubled end walls and folded inward over the first said lace members to expose the lace edges there of and form a superposed lace effect.
In testimony whereof I have `signed my name to this specification.
