' Application filed June 1a, 1923. Serial no. 64 5,15af
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT BLANDFORD, citizen of the 'United. States,.resi-dik1g at Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of New, York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding-Blank Boxes, of which the following is a. specification. 1
This invention relates to folded blank boxes and more particularly to a box espe-. cially designed for containing a skirt? or the like. i
One of the objects of this invention is to produce a box of this nature provided with means for automatically locking the top thereon.
A further object of this invention is to produce a folded blank box. for containing a skirt or the like which can be readily folded from a blank, producing a box of neat appearance and provided with novel means for securing the top uponthe box.
These and other objects will more fully.
appear and the nature of the invention will be more clearly understood from the following description, the subject matter of the appended claims and the several views illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
. Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box in closed position; Fig. "2--is a similar View to Fig. 1, but showing the box lid in elevated position;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view, partly in section, taken on line 33 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow;
Fig.4 is a horizontal sectional view oh line 4-4 of Fig. 3 looking in the direction of themarrow, and,
gles.
Fig. 5 is a plan View of the blank employed in the formation of the box.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 5 of the drawings, the blank is preferably formed of stiff cardboard or the like usually em-- ployed in the manufacture of folded blank boxes. The blank is provided with the two parallel indented or grooved lines 1 and 2 which extend longitudinally of the blank from end to end and in proximity to the side edges thereof. The blank is also provided with the transverse indented or grooved lines 3 and 4 which run parallel to each other from side to side and intersect the longitudinal lines 1 and 2 at right an- In addition to the afore-mentioned indented lines, are two other transverse indented lines 5 and 6 which extend transversely of the blank in parallelism to the lines 3 and 4, the lines 5 and 6 terminating at their intersections with the longitudinal lines 1 and 2. The portions of the blank from the eng gf the lines 5 and 6, are slitted as at 7 an I The'blank being thus indented b1- grooved provides the bottom 9, the front wall. .10,
the rear walln 11, and the end walls 12-provided with the inturne'd flaps 13. At the.
upper edge of the front wall along the.
line 6 is provided an inturned, overlapping portion 14 having the inturned flaps 15.
The ends of the indented line. 5 terminate at their intersections with the longitudinal lines 1 and 2, the remaining portion of the blank beyond the lines 1 and 2 being slitted' at 8 as hereinbefore stated. This forms the top 16 of the box, the top being provided with the ends 17, the edge 18 of the top 16 being inwardly cut in converging relation as at 19 and intermediate of the terminating ends of the'cuts 19 is a slit 20 parallel to the edge 18, so thatthere is formed thereat a keeper .flap 21. .There is also formed in the free edge of the overlapping portion 14 a tongue 22 formed by the inwardly directed cut-out portions 23in the edge of the. mem-.
' of the respective inwardly yieldable keepers 28. These yieldable members 28 are formed by the exteriorly indented lines 29 extend ing from the ends of the slits 26 to the bot tom edge of the ends 17 of the top 16 and also the intermediate exteriorly indented lines 30 extending from the center of the slots 24 to the bottom edges of the respective ends 17. This construction provides the in- In folding the box from the blank shown I in Fig. 5, the ends 12 are bent, upwardly along the lines 1 and 2 and the flaps 13 are bent laterally inwardly parallel to the lines- 3 and'4. Subsequently the front wall is bent upwardlyalong the line 4 and thereafter" the overlapping member 14 is bent along the line 6 and the flaps of the member 14 are also folded along the extremities of the lines 1 and 2 inwardly so that when the member 14 is carried over to the top w edges of the box thevflaps 1'5 will'be placed in vertical osition at the inner sides of the ends 12 and their flaps l3. Thereafter the blank is bent along the line 3 to provide the back wall 11 which when folded up lies-adjacent to the outer sides of the rearmost keepers 28 have been slightly pressed inwardly, is now bent along the line 5 and downwardly upon the box with the ends 17 positioned in the inner sides of the respective end walls 12 of the box, whereby the heads 31, which have also been pressed slightly inwardly, will pass in the space between the 'inwardly depressed keepers 28 and the inner walls of the ends 12, so that the heads 31 "will be automatically projected through the slots 24 until the opposite shoulders of the heads 31 will rest againstthe shoulders 27 of the keepers, which thereby prevents the heads 31 of the tongues 32 from being withdrawn from their engagement with the keepers until it is so desired. After the lid 16 has thus been looked upon the box with the front edge portion about to lie upon the member 14 of thefront wall, 10,'a tongue 22 'at the front of the box is' projected through the slot from'beneath, and the flap keeper 21 of the top is pressed downwardly upon the member 14 and is adapted to lie flush with the front edge of the top" 16 and assist in securing the top upon'the box.
sections bein Havin thus described my invention, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a box of the character specified, consisting of a bottom, 'front and rear walls, and end walls, a top for said box, end walls for said to adapted to be positioned within the end wa ls of said box, inwardly yieldablc tongues upon the end walls of said box, and lnwardly 'yieldable keepers extending .out through the edges of the end walls of said top for cooperation with said tongues'upon the ends of said box, whereby to automatically lock in assembled relation the respective ends of said box and said top.
2. In a box of the character specified, consisting of a bottom, front and rear walls, andend walls, a top for said box, end walls for said top adapted to be positioned within the end walls of said box, inwardly yieldable tongues upon the end walls of said box, inwardly yiel able keepers extending out through the edges of the end walls of said top for co-operation with said tongues upon the ends of said box, whereby to automatically lock in assembled relation the respective ends of said box and said top, a tongue at the front wall of said box, and a keeper at the front edge of said to for co-operating with said tongue at the ront of the box to additionally secure said top upon said box.
3. ,A box comprising top and bottoin sections having walls, the walls of one of said formed with tongues having shoulders an the walls of the other section being formed with slots and with incisions extending from and arranged at right an-r gles to said slots, said slotsbeing adapted to receive said tongues and the walls which are provided with the slots also being provided with inwardly yieldable portions adjacent the slots whereby. to permit of the free passage of said tongues.
In testimony whereof aflix my signature.
HERBERT BLANDFORD.
