FOLDING BOX.
No. 267 :698. Patented Nov. 21, 1882.
INVBNTORTI -.ATTORNEYS..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT LUDLOW, 0E BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR "ro WILLIAM H. H. ROGERS,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,698, dated November 21, 1882.
' Application filed April5,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT LUDLOW, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Myinvention consists of a folding orcollapsible box of improved construction, and of an improved box-cover, the construction of the box beingsuch thatthe waste ofmaterialinits manufacture is very small, and such that the box can be easily and quickly set upfor use, the construction of the cover being such thatit can be made of one piece of material, and such that any number of covers may be set one within another, so that they may be packed away in small space. The form of box which I prefer will be a four-cornered box made with the lock at the bottom of the box and open at the top, the sides or walls of the box being continuous or solid, the same as ordinary non-folding boxes. The rim of the covers will be made to stand slightly outward or flaring from the main portion on top of the cover, and the top of the box will be slightly cut away at the corners in such manner that the flaring covers will fit upon the box.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of the box as it appears when folded. Fig. 2is a sectional elevation of the same, taken on the line as m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the box inverted, as it appears when set upfor use. Fig. 4. is a plan view of the boxcover; and Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation, illustrating several covers as they appear when set into each other for packing or stowingaway.
A represents the folding box, and B represents the cover.
In making my new and improved-folding box A, I prefer to take a rectangular piece of material of suitable size and unite its ends so as to practically form a cylindrical blank. This blank will then be brought together or collapsed, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to form the bends or folds a a. The blank is then to be bent or again folded on opposite sides to form the bends or folds b b, which are made equidistant from the bends a a, respectively. If a square box is desired, these bends or folds b b will be made in the center ofthe width of the blank (midway between the bends cm) as folded. If a rectangular box is desired, these folds b b willbe made on opposite sides of the center of the folded blank, as shown in Fig. 1, the distance from the center being varied according to the desired relative width of the sides and ends of the box. The blank is then cut through with the slots or cuts 0 c" and d d in all of the bends or folds, the slots or cuts extending from one edge ofthe blank to or nearly to the horizontal center, or center of the length of the blank, thus forming the flaps D, E, F, and G. The flap G is then cut through at or near the center with the slot or out h, which reaches to or nearly to the center of the width of the blank, and its corners are diagonally cut to form the locking-heads, as clearly shown in Fig.1 and in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and the flap F is incised to form the 1ocking-slotl.c,as shownin Fig. 3 and in dotted lines in Fig. l. The flaps D, E, F, and G are then bent or folded at the center of the width of the blank to form the folds ff and g g.
To set the box up, the flaps and E are first folded in, as shown in Fig. 3. The flap F is then folded in, and then one of the heads jis passed through the slot is, and then, finally,
the other, the heads, after passing through the slot, being drawn to one side to complete the lock. 1
The cover B is made of a single piece of ma terial, and the rims pp thereofare made slightly flaring, as shown clearly in Figs. 4 and 5, so that the covers are adapted to be set one into another, as shown in Fig. 5, so thatmanycovers canbe packed or stowed awayin smallspace.
In order to make the cover fit upon the box, the corners of the box are slightly cut away at the top of thebox, as shown at ll, so that the upper edges of the box will conform to the inclination of the cover.
By this construction of the box it will be seen that the box is very simple, quickly and easily set up, has but one fastening or look, is
further saving in material.
Although I prefer to make the box so that the lock is formed upon the bottom of the box, ldo not confine myself to such construction, as the box may be formed so that the lock will come on the side of the box.
Having thus fully described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent v 1. A folding-box blank formed with the flaps G and F, the flap G being cut to form the locking-heads jj, and the flap F being formed with the slot 7c, substantially as described.
2. A blank for a folding box, bent to form the folds a a, b b,f f, and g g, and cut to form the flaps D, E, F, and G, the flap G being centrally slotted and formed with the lockingheads j j, and the flap F cut to form the slot 76, substantially as described.
