Sutherland, Kalamazoo, Mich., assignor to Sutherland Paper Company, Kalamazoo,
Mich.
Application April 29, 1932. Serial No. 608,153
14 Claims.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved container or box well adapted for ice cream and other materials in which the cover may be quickly applied by machinery or by hand, the cover being retained so that it is not likely to become loosened or destroyed in handling, while at the same time it is easily removed.
A further object is to provide a container having these advantages which is 'very economical in its parts and attractive in appearance.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure which embodies the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in. the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved container with the cover in position.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3.is a plan view of the blank from which the body of the container illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 is formed.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the cover blank.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary edge view of the cover.
Fig. 6 is a vertical section of a slightly modified form or embodiment of my invention.
Fig. '7 is a fragmentary horizontal section on line 7-7 of Fig. 6 with the cover in position.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary view of the blank from which the body 'of the container shown in Figs. 6 and 7 is formed.
Fig. 9 is a fragmentary vertical section of my improved container provided with a modified form of cover.
Fig. 10 is a fragmentary plan view of the modifled form of cover.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and -3 the body of the container is formed of an integral blank comprising a bottom 1, opposed downwardly tapered side wall portions 2 and 3 extending from opposite edges of the bottom, and side wall fiaps 4 extending from the other edges of the bottom. The side wall portion 2 has side wall extensions 5 on its vertical edges while the side wall portion 3 has cor-' responding side wall extensions 6 on its vertical edges.
.These side wall extensions 5 and 6 are disposed in overlapping relation with the fiaps 4 between them, the extensions 5 being arranged on the inside and preferably having inward offsets 7 providing recesses for receiving the side wall flaps 4 when the box is set up. The side wall extensions are glued together in overlapping relation providing a downwardly tapered container.
The side wall portions 2 and 3 are preferably provided with heads 8 disposed in spaced relation but parallel to the upper edges of these wall portions. The inner side wall flaps 5 are provided with similar beads 9 forming cover supports or rests.
Slots 10 are formed in the inner side wall extensions preferably in the plane of the beads 9 thereof, so that when the box is set up there are, in effect, inwardly facing slot-like recesses adapted to receive the retaining tongues 11 for the cover 12. The cover 12 has upturned flaps 13 on .its edges and the tongues are formed by slits 14 in the flaps.
When the cover is pushed into the container these tongues 11 snap into the slots, efiectively retaining the cover against accidental dislocation, but the cover is quite easily removed by grasping the unslitted cover fiaps which results in springing the bottom and withdrawing the tongues from the slots.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8 the beads 9 are omitted from the side wall extensions 5, slots 15 extending approximately from edge to edge of the side wall extensions being provided in lieu of the spaced slots 10. These slots 15 are adapted to receive the tongues 11 of the cover 12 as shown in Fig. 7, or to receive the long tongues 16 of the cover 17. One pair of flaps is omitted in this form of bottom, see Figs. 9 and 10, the tongues extending sub stantially across opposite edges of the cover which has a pair of opposed cover flaps 18. Either the cover 17 or the cover 12 may be employed in the embodiment shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8.
My improved container is well adapted for ice cream and like materials in which the containers are filled by a machine. A measured charge may be placed in the container and the cover inserted and retained by merely pressing it home to the position in which the tongues engage the slots or inwardly facing recesses resulting from slotting the inner side wall extension members.
I haveillustrated and described my improvements in commercial embodiments which I have found very practical. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain other modifications or adaptations which I contemplate as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
