3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in cup dispensing cartons.
The main objects of'this invention are:
First, to provide a cup dispensing carton or container for nested cups which serves as an effective shipping and sanitary storage receptacle for the cups and at the same time permits withdrawal of the cups one by one when the container is mounted in dispensing position;
' Second, to provide a dispensing carton for cups which may be formed entirely of fibrous carton or container stock and at the same time has cup retaining detents which. are adapted to withstand considerable load, yet permit the withdrawal of the cups one byone, and the cups are not likely to become displaced or disarranged in use or in shipping and handling of the carton.
Third, to provide a structure having these advantages which is very economical.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the description -.to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
The lower end of the carton is provided with closure flaps 8, 8 and i partially severed from the body along the folding lines II to facilitate .tearing oi! the lower end ,flaps when the carton A structure which embodies the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front perspective view of a cup dispensing carton embodying my invention in dispensing position, a portion of the wall of the body of the container being broken away to show structural details.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the end flaps open.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the container on the diagonal line 3-3 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the cup retaining member in erected position.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is tical section of a modified form or embodiment of my invention.
In the accompanying the carton with drawing I have illusan enlarged inside fragmentary ver-' trated my invention as embodied in a dispensing carton for cups I which, as illustrated, are provided with bead-like rims 2.
The dispensing carton of my invention com-- prisesthe elongated tubular body 3 formed of fibrous carton or container stock provided with top end closures l, 4 adapted to interlock and an outer top closure 5 having a tuck flap 6 at its outer end. These parts when closed form a completely closed end as shown in Fig. 1. The rear wall of the body is provided with a perforation or eyelet 'l to receive a nail or other support.
is supported for use. The cups are removably retained within the body by means of the tubular cup retaining member I: which is telescoped or sleeved into the body, being preferably a close fit therein, and retained as by means of staples IS. The retaining member is preferably arranged with its lower edge flush with the lower end of the body as shown in Fig. 3, the retaining member and body serving as mutually coacting reinforcing members.
The corners of the retaining member are vertically scored or weakened at H to'facilitate folding, being formed of a continuous blank with overlapping portions l5 adhesively secured together, see Fig. 4. This retaining member has vertically spaced slits l6 and I1 extending across the comers thereof, the upper slits It being relatively short and the lower slits ll preferably reversely curved as in the structure illustrated. The adjacent walls have upwardly converging score lines or weakened zones l8 which extend from the ends of the slits II to the ends of the slits l6. These score lines or weakened zones, together with the comer score lines or weakened zones l4, permit the portion bounded by the slits and the weakened zones H to be deflected in- 'wardly as the walls of the retaining member are adjusted to erected tubular position to provide triangular inwardly inclined detents is. when the walls'are secured in this erected tubular position thedefiected portions are very eflectively retained in their erected or detent-constituting position.
With the parts in the position shown in Fig. 4 the retaining member is inserted in the body of the carton and secured therein. Their several detents are effectively retained in erected position to serve as supports for the cups and also to permit withdrawal of the cups one by one. The detents are quite rigid but will yield to permit the withdrawal of the cups, and, also, cups with certain types of rims will yield substantially to pass the detents.
and set of detents. However, the single set of detents is found to be very eflective.
Ihave illustrated and described my invention in embodiments which I have found to be very desirable. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain modifications andadaptations which I- contemplate as it is believed this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to adapt my invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A cup dispensing carton adapted as a container for a stack of nested cups having rims comprising an elongated tubular body formed of fibrous carton stock and being of rectangular cross section and provided with closure flaps, the bottom end closure flaps being joined to the walls of thebody along weakened zones to facili-v tate removal thereof, and a tubular cup retaining member also formed of fibrous carton stock and being of rectangular cross section telescoped within said body at the lower end thereof and secured therein with its lower edge substantially flush with the lower end of the body and constituting a reinforcing member therefor, said retaining member having corner scores and reversely curved transverse slits at the corners thereof extending into the adjacent side walls and upwardly converging scores extending from the ends of the slits to points adjacent the corners, said scores facilitating the folding of the portions of the retaining member bounded by said slit and converging scores into triangular downwardly inclined detents which coact with the rimsof the cups for yieldingly retaining the same and permitting their withdrawal one by one, the supporting of the walls of the retaining member in their angular relation within said body acting to support said detents in their erected position.
2. A cup dispensing carton adapted as a container-for a stack of nested cups having rims comprising an elongated tubular body formed of fibrous carton stock and being of rectangular cross section, and a tubular cup retaining mem- 1 ber also formed of fibrous carton stock and being of rectangular cross section telescoped within said body at the lower end thereof and secured therein with its lower edge substantially flush with the lower end of the body and constituting a reinforcing member therefor, said retaining member having corner scores and reversely curved transverse slits at the corners thereof extending into the adjacent side walls and upwardly converging scores extending from the ends of the slits to points adjacent the corners, said scores facilitating the folding of the portions of the retaining member bounded by said slit and converging scores into trangular downwardly inclined detents which coact with the rims of the cups for yieldingly retaining the same and permitting their withdrawal one by one, the supporting of the walls of the retaining member in their angular relation within said body acting to support said detents in their erected position.
3. A cup dispensing carton adapted as a container for a stack of nested cups comprising an elongated tubular body formed'of fibrous carton stock, and a tubular cup retaining member also formed of fibrous carton stock having angularly disposed walls sleeved within said body at the lower end thereof and secured therein, said retaining member having reversely curved transverging scores being deflected inwardly into triangular downwardly inclined cup retaining detents permitting the withdrawal of cups one by one.
