r I I II United States Patent This invention relates to an improved type of display box suitable for the display-packaging of a wide range of commodities. N
More particularly, the invention relates to improvements in display packages or boxes of the sealed type including an open-top body portion having bottom and side walls and a display cover made of transparent material secured to said side walls to'seal the package or box and to provide a window openingthrough which the contents of the package or box may be viewed. 7
'One object of the invention is the provision of an attractive, economical, sealed display package or box of the type described having double side walls designed to cushion and protect the contents of the package or box against damage.
Another object is the provision of a collapsible opentop box structure having abottom wall and-double side walls integral with said bottom wall, said sidewalls being provided withmeans whereby they are automatically interlocked'with each other. when raised from a collapsed to a set-up position.
Other objects, advantages and characteristic features of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed description of the embodiments illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of one embodiment of the invention as it appears with the side walls of the box in their collapsed and separated condition.
Fig. 2 is a view, partly in top plan and partly in horizontal section, showing the manner in which the side walls of the box body are interlocked with each other to secure them in their set-up position.
Fig. 3 shows an enlarged partial section taken substantially along the section line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 shows a complete section of the box body in its set-up condition, the plane of the section being indicated by section line 4-4 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4a is a detail sectional view taken along the section line 4a-4a of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing a modified form of box body as it appears in its set-up condition.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken substantially along the section line 66 of Fig. 5.
Figs. 1 to 4 inclusvie illustrate an embodiment of the invention in which an open-top box 5 is formed from a single blank of cardboard, folded along predetermined fold lines, to provide a bottom wall 7 and hollow rectangular side wall 8 and 9.
Each of the side walls 8 and 9 includes an inner side wall section 10, an outer side wall section 11 and top and bottom wall section 12 and 13. The lower edge of each inner side wall section 10 is integrally joined, along fold line 14, to the adjacent margin of the bottom wall 7 of the body portion 5. The upper edge of each inner wall section 10 is integrally joined, along fold line 15, to the inner longitudinal edge of the associated top wall section 12. The upper edge of each outer side Wall section .11 is integrally joined, along fold line 16, to the outer longitudinal edge of top wall section -12. The lower edge of each outer side wall section 11 is integrally joined, along fold line 17, to the outer longitudinal edge of bottom wall section 13.
The bottom wall section 13 of each of the side walls 8 and 9 has an inner section 13a thereof disposed beneath and adhesively secured to the lower surface of the bottom wall 7 of the body section. From this description, it will be seen that the top and bottom walls 12 and 13 of each of the side walls 8 and 9 serve to connect and space apart the inner and outer side wall sections 10 and 11 of said walls.
The inner and outer side wall sections 10 and 11 of the side Walls 8 are made of unequal length. In this connection, it will be noted that the inner side wall section 10 of each side wall 8 is of the same length as the marginal portion of the bottom wall 7 to which said side wall section 10 is joined. However, the outer side wall section 11 of each side wall 8 is made longer than the companion inner side wall section 10 and projects beyond the ends of the latter as indicated at 11a. The top wall section 12 of each side wall 8 varies in length from a length at the fold line 15 to a maximum length at the fold line 16 and is provided with inclined end edges 12a.
The bottom wall 13 (including the inner section 13a) of each side wall 8 also varies in length from a maximum length at the fold line .17 to a minimum length at its inner edge 13b and is provided with bevelled end edges 130.
The wall sections 10, 11 and 12 of each side wall 9 are of uniform length but are longer than the length'of the marginal portions of the bottom wall 7 to which the inner side Wall sections 10 of the side walls 9 are integrally joined.
The bottom wall section 13 including the inner section 13a of each side wall 9 varies in length from a maximum length at the fold line 17 to a minimum length at its inner side edge 13d and is provided with inclined end edges 13a disposed in abutting engagement with the inclined end edges of the bottom wall sections 13 of the side walls 8.
When the side Walls 8 and 9 of the body portion 5 are disposed in upright position, the end edges of the wall sections .10 and 12 of the side Walls 9 are butted against the inner surfaces of the extended end portions 11a of the outer side wall sections 11 of the side walls 8 and the end edges of the inner side wall sections 10 of the side walls 8 are butted against the inner surfaces of the inner side wall sections 10 of the side walls 9 to provide a desirable overlapping arrangement of the end portions of the hollow side walls 8 and 9 at the corners of the body portion 5.
The box 5 is formed so that the side walls 8 and 9 tend to swing outwardly from each other to the substantially collapsed condition shown in Fig. 1 which is convenient for storage and shipping. When the side walls 8 and 9 are raised from the collapsed condition shown in Fig. l to the set-up condition shown in Figs. 2 to 4 inclusive, they are automatically interlocked with each other by locking means including hook shaped locking tongues 21 which are formed integral with the end edges of the inner side wall sections 10 of the side Walls 8 and which are disposed in the plane of said Wall sections 10. The inner side wall section 10 of each side Wall 9 is provided near each end thereof with a locking tongue receiving slot 22 having a relatively wide lower portion 23 and a relatively narrow curved upper slit-like portion 24. In this connection it will be noted that the relatively narrow upper slit-like portions 24 of the slots 23 of each wall section 10 of the side walls 9 curve upwardly and inwardly toward the medial portion of the Wall section 10. As the side walls 8 and 9 of the box are raised to their set-up position, the locking tongues 21 of the side walls 8 are forced outwardly through the tongue receiving slots 22 of the side walls 9 as the latter are forced inwardly into abutting engagement with the ends of the inner side wall sections 10 of the side walls 8. During this operation, the upwardly projecting bill portions of the locking tongues 21 are forced outwardly through the curved'slit-like upper portions 24 of the slots 22 and are bent or deflected slightly toward the medial portions of the side walls 8 until these bill portions of the locking tongues 21 have passed entirely through the curved portions 24 of the slots 22 and are free to spring back to their original vertical position as'indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4 1.
It will thus be seen that the bill portions of the locking tongues 21, after passing through the curved'upper portions 24 of the slots 22 in a deflected condition, resume a vertical position in which they engage the outwardly facing sides of the inner wall sections 10 of the side walls 9 at points directly above the wired lower portion 23 of the slots 22 and thus serve to interlock the side walls 9 with the side walls 8. p
In the modifications illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 the hollow side walls 8 and 9 are closed at the bottom by marginal portions of the bottom wall 7 to which the outer side wall sections 11 are integrally hinged at 11a. In this modification the inner side wall sections are provided, at their lower edges, with inwardly directed flap extensions 10x which extend over and are adhesively secured to the upper surface of the bottom wall 7. In all other respects the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is the sameas the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 4a inclusive andis provided with the same arrangement of locking tongues and slots for interlocking the side walls 8 and 9 in their setup condition.
While I have described and illustrated in detail what I now consider to be preferred embodiments of this invention, it will be understood that various modifications may be resorted to in practice.
What I claim is:
A display package comprising a body portion formed v 4 from a single blank of cardboard folded along predetermined'lines 'to'provide a bottom wall and hollow rectangular side walls, each of said side walls including an outer and an inner spaced sidewall section, an upper wall section hingedly interconnecting the upper ends of said outer and inner sidewall sections, the lower end of said outer sidewall section being hingedly connected to an adjacent margin of said bottom wall, and a flap hingedly connected to the lower end of said inner sidewall section, said flaps extending from said inner sidewall sections and being secured to the upper surface ofmarginalportions of said bottom wall located within the area defined by said inner sidewall sections, the outer and inner sidewall sections and upper wall sections 'of one pair of opposed side walls being coextensive with the bottom wall, the outer sidewall sections of the other pair of opposed side walls being coextensive with the bot-tom wall, the upper wall sectionsand inner sidewall sections of the other pair of opposed side walls being undercut so that the said one pair of side walls -fitswithin the undercut portions of the said .other pair of sidewalls, and locking means for interlocking the'inner sidewall sections of adjacent side walls witheach other as said side walls are raised from a collapsed to a set-up condition, said locking means comprising hook-shaped'locking tongues formed integral with the end edges of the inner side wall sections of the said other pair of opposed side walls and adapted to be forced outwardly through tongue-receiving slots formed inthe inner sidewall sections of the said one pair of opposed side walls, each of said slots'being formed with a relatively wide, vertical, lower portion and a relatively narrow, upwardly diverging, upper portion, the latter being of a height equal to the length of the hook portion of said locking tongue.
