Description

Jan. 10, 1956 J. J. STAVIS ET AL SET UP BOX Filed Dec. 2, 1952 2,6 21 26 4058 as 5g FIGS INVENTOR. JOSEPH J. STAVIS BERNARD H. STAVIS PW M 0 0 ATTORNEYS United States Patent G *Joseph J. Stavis, Roxbury,an'd Bernar'tl H. Stavis, Newton, Mass.
Application'illecember 2,;1952, SerialrNo. 323,626 Claims. '(Cl.22952) "This invention relates'to'setup boxes of;paper"board or the like, particularly ofthetype which 'can 'be'nested for shipment.
An object of the invention is'to provide a nesting set up box madeofpaper board and having a handle formed in one of the .closure'flaps ofthe' cover rather "than attached separately to the .cover, thereby effecting a saving of material Another object of'the'invention'is to form. such abox and handle with a slot for receiving thehandle posi tioned in one ofthe walls of .the .box rather.than on a special slotted 'fiap thereby also saving considerable material.
A further-object of the invention :is ito provide a tapere'd :setup box with an integral handle and ..handle slot wh'erein .the handle is precreased5'to more :readily enter the handle slot upon .closingnf .the box into carrying position.
A still furtherobject-of the invention is to*provide a handle ones-tapered set up box whi'ch I handle is of double thickness above and below the handle slot, thus achieving extra strength in the areas of greatest stress.
Another object of the invention is to provide a handle on a tapered set up box which is not only of double thickness above and below the handle slot but also includes a double portion extending longitudinally beyond the ends of the handle slot.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a set up box with a hinged cover in which a closure flap of the cover serves as a supporting element for the box in non-carrying position and serves as a handle in carrying position.
In the drawing,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the invention in open position.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the box shown in Fig. l, in section on line 22 of Fig. 1, showing the manner of nesting the same.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the box shown in Fig. 2 with the cover closed and the handle in noncarrying position.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the handle in carrying position.
Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the box shown in Fig. 4 on end and in carrying position.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary plan view similar to Fig. 1 of a modified form of handle and Fig. 7 is a fragmentary side elevation in section, similar to Fig. 4 showing the doubled handles in bowed condition.
The preferred form of the invention is shown in Figs. 1-5 and Fig. 7 and comprises a nestable set up box B having a cover with an integral handle H. The box B includes a pair of tapered side walls 20 and 21, a pair of tapered end walls 22 and 23 and a fiat bottom 25, the walls being joined at the corners such as 26 to form a set up box.
A fiat cover 27 is hingedly attached to the upper edge preferred form of the of 'a wall such as 23 along the line 'of articulation 28 andisjprovided with a'pair 'oftapered side closure flaps 29 and 30, hingedly attached to cover 27 along lines of'articulation '32'and 33. A tapered'end closure flap 35 is' hingedlyattachedto'cover'27 along'the line ofarticulation36at the free end o'fthe cover opposite "the line of articulation 28.
The handle H of the invention is integral with the tapered'endclosure'flap 35 and forms the terminal'portion'thereof.
As shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, handle H is preferably doubled, the portion 51 being formed from the same sheet of material and bent' back uponthe portion 52on'the line of articulation'53. Asshownportions52 and "51 are preferably of less width than the "base portion 'ofend closure flap 35 and are shaped to form a h'an'd grip with a'finger opening such as "54 there'through.
'Aterminal glue tab-'58 is provided on the portion 51 and adhesively securedto the insideface 4,0 of 'end'closure flap 35 by any suitable adhesivesuch'as glue. The portions 52 and '51 are of the same'width as an elongated slot S formed centrally in the wall such as 22 opposite to the Wall to which cover '27 isattached. 'Pre'ferablythe glue tab fi is of greater width'than the slot S, 0r the handle H, as indicated at"59 and 60.
"Thus, as shown in dotted'lines'inFig. 5,'tab53 extends longitudinallybeyond'the-endsof the'slot'S and distributes the stress *on'the line of articulation '70 of thehaudle when theboxB isfilled.
Handle H is preferably 'pre-creased on its *line of hinged attachment 70, by any suitable wellknown mechanism'during the manufacture of box B, whereby handle H-"may'be bent outwardly'from flap *35 from its normal position in extension thereof. -When the cover'27 is beingclosed with the-side closure flaps 29 -and '30 and the end closure flap 25 tucked inside walls 20, 21 and 22, the edge at 53 of handle H thus bears against the inside face of wall 22 and springs into the slot S. Handle H may then be drawn further through slot S until in the carrying position shown in Figs. 4 and 5, in which position the cover 27 is locked to the receptacle portion of box B.
In its normal position shown in Fig. 3, which is called herein-the non carry position, handle H is in extension of the remainder of flap 35 and serves to support the cover on the box in the same manner as the side closure flaps 29 and 30.
It should be noted that end flap 35 with its doubled handle H is equal in depth to the depth of the front wall 22 of the box, and that the side closure flaps 29 and 30 are equal in depth to the depth of the side walls 20 and 21 of the box. Thus both the side closure flaps 29 and 30 and the end closure flap 35 reach, and are supported on the box bottom 25 when the cover is 'closed in non carry or storage position. When the boxes of this invention are filled with shoes or the like and stacked one upon the other, the covers 27 of each box are supported entirely around the box and do not sag or collapse.
As indicated in Fig. 7, the doubled portions 51 and 52 of handle H may be bent into bowed form in which position they tend to prevent accidental withdrawal of handle H from the slot S. For withdrawal or insertion, the portions 51 and 52 are pressed fiatwise together and easily passed through slot S.
A modified form of the invention is shown in Fig. 6 wherein the handle 200 of a box 202 is not doubled, but is formed from an end closure flap 201 and connected thereto by the line of articulation 203. The end closure flap 201 is hingedly connected to a cover 227, similar to 27 and the other parts of the box 202 are similar to box B including a slot such as S for the handle 200.
As indicated in Fig. 2, it will be noted that the tapered set up boxes B, each formed of sheet material and having a handle H and handle slot S may be nested for shipment. As indicated in Fig. 3 the boxes B may be filled and the cover closed while resting on the shelves iof a store without handle projecting to take up space. As indicated in Figs. 4 and 5 when the box and its contents are sold the handle H is inserted in slot S so that the cover is not only locked to the box, but the customer can carry the box by the handle. The box B is thus not only useful as a shipment container for articles such as shoes or the like, but may be used by the customer as a hand bag, knitting bag or similar hand carried receptacle for a long period after purchasing the article contained therein.
We claim:

4. A combination as specified in claim 3 wherein said doubled end closure flap is pre-creased laterally at the base of said handle and said handle is pre-folded on said crease line into an angular position relative to the base of said flap for causing the leading edge of the handle to engage in said slot when the cover is being closed.
5. A combination as specified in claim 3 wherein the plies of the handle portion of said end closure flap are in bowed formation whereby the bowed handle may be squeezed flatwise to pass through said slot but resume said bow after such passage.
