CALVIN H. TROUP, OF BELLEFONTE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE PENNSYL- VANIA MATCH COMPANY, INC., OF BELLEFONTE, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
ATTACHMENT FOR MATCH-BOXES.
I Specification of I.etters Patent.
Patented Apr. 3,1191%.
Application filed June 24, 1915. Serial No. 86,093.
Pennsylvania, have invented and discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
- The present invention relates to matchboxes or retainers and consists in the combinations and arrangements of elements hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the accompanying claims.
The invention has for its purpose to provide an attachment for paper match-boxes of the regular commercial type, whereby the same may be readily altered to form self-- feeding magazine match safes, or hang-up match-boxes, and Without mutilating or in any manner changing the original package construction.
A further purpose of the invention is to construct the attachment from a single blank sheet that may be readily shaped for changing the package into a receptacle for hanging on the wall by a simple and easily performed operation.
The invention is shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 shows the match-box in its form for commercial use,
Fig. 2 shows the same converted into a magazine-match safe,
Fig. 3 a detailed perspective view of the safety keeper,
Fig. 4 a longitudinal sectional view of the box in package form,
Fig. 5 a top plan sectional view thereof,
Fig. 6 a central vertical sectional view of the box converted as a wall receptacle, and
Fig. 7 a plan view of the blank forming the safety keeper.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the box, having a bottom wall 2 and side and end walls 3 and 4 respectively. An open ended cover 5 is slidably mounted on the body and forms therewith the usual commercial match-box.
The attachment or safety keeper, per 86, consists of a blank sheet 6 forming a strip portion 7 adapted to be folded within the box, as in Figs. 1 and 4, to provide the usual match retaining piece when the box is being used as a commercial package. A rectangular portion 8, forming a bottom having the width of the strip 6, is formed continuous therewith and is scored or creased along the lines 9: and 10, whereby said bottom may be folded accordingly as the match-box is being used as a safety keeper (see Figt fi) or as a package, as in Fig. 4.
A front portion 11 connects with'the bot tom 8 along the scored line 12 and carries a pair of side extensions or wingsxl3 that form the side members 14 and bottom pieces 15. And said side pieces have projecting tabs 16- that serve as retaining devices for the keeper (see Fig. 6). The side extensions 13 are creased to be folded along the lines 17, and in like manner along the lines 18, for shaping the blank into the receptacle form, as indicated in Figs. 2, 3, and 5. In the box form the members 15 overlie the portion 8, and. one end wall 4 of the body enters between said bottom sections in the'manner shown in Fig. 6. The clearances 19 between the bottom sections 8 and 15 will readily allow said side extensions 14 and 1,5 to be folded inwardly and permit the boxing to be readily housed within the match-box when the same is being used as a package, and to.
permit of its convenient withdrawal when the device is used as a wall receptacle.
The end piece 11 is cut away, as at 20, to expose the matches and leave the same free to be taken, and said side extensions are in like manner reduced, as at 21, in order that the box elements may be conveniently shaped and without buckling. A11 aperture 22 is formed in the upper end of the strip 7 for hanging the article as a wall receptacle.
In commercial use, the strip 6 together with the bottom and end walls 8 and 11 are folded about the body of the box and are retained in that position by the sliding cover 5, and the boxing or match chamber is folded within the cover along the creased line 10; and when converted to be used as a wall receptacle, the bottom wall 8 is withdrawn for that distance between the lines 9 and 10, when the cover 5 is slightly moved toengage the notches 23. The contained matches will then, of themselves, feed into said boxing for convenient removal.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangement of partswithout departing from the spirit of the invention, and therefore I do not wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination, with a match box comprising a body and a slidable cover therefor, of an attachment constructed from a blank sheet having a foldable strip portion, a bottom portion, a front portion, side portions, and tabs on said side portions; said strip portion forming a match retainer when the box is used as a package and providing a support when used as a wall receptacle, said bottom, front, and side portions forming an open and squared boxing adapted to project horizontally beyond said body and provide a receiver for the matches, said sides having slots alongside the edges of said tabs adapted to engage with the box cover, whereby the lower edge of said box cover is engaged and said tabs rest against the inner surface thereof and form supporting members for said match receiver, and said bottom portions constructed to permit the folding of the receiver within the match box, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a match box comprising a body and a slidable cover therefor, of an attachment constructed from a blank sheet having a foldable strip porforming a match retainer when the box is used as a package and providing a support when used as a wall' receptacle, said bottom portions, front and side portions forming an open boxing adapted to project beyond said body and provide a receiver for the matches, the bottom sections adapted to overlie said bottom portion and receive therebetween an end wall of the box body, said tabs and the slots adapted to engage with the box cover and form supporting means for the match receiver, and said scored bottom portion permitting the folding of the receiver within the match box, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, this 16th day of June, A. D. nineteen hundred and fifteen.
