This invention relates to a cutter package and particularly to one for use withrolled material, such as paper and the like for dispensing the same in such manner as pieces of desired length may be torn ofi against the cutter.
The package of this invention is especially useful for waxed and like paper utilized for wrapping food and the like and is arranged to enclose such paperto protect the same from dust, and to allow ready withdrawal of the paper web in order thatpieces of requisite sizes may be torn off as desired.
The invention further contemplates a package made from a single blank of material, which is scored and folded to provide a package of the requisite form and arrangement.
An object of the invention is to provide a package for roll paper, whereby portions of provide a package for roll paper which is made from a blank scored and folded in such manner as-to provide a proper package with minimum of weight and one which may be easily and readily assembled into box-like form, in such manner as to be readily disassembled, if desired.
The above, other and further objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description, accompanying drawings and appended claims.
According to the invention, a blank of material is scored and folded to provide a front, bottom, rear, and top wall, as well as a second or supplemental front wall, the latter having end pieces with tuck in flaps for securing the several parts in box-like form. The two front --walls provide a space or passageway through t e which the Web of the maternal within package may be Withdrawn, and furthermore, a cutting blade is provided adjacent the passageway for tearing ofi' strips of material as desired.
Embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings and the views thereof are as follows:

Figure 7 is a plan view of the blank from which the box of Figure 2 is made.
Figure 8 is a fragmental portion of a blank utilized in making the box of the form in Figure 3.
Figure 9 is a similar fragmental portion of a blank utilized in making the box of the form of Figure 4. Y
Figure 10 is a transverse vertical section through a box of the form of Figure 2.
Figure ll. is a similar sectional view through abox of the form of Figure 3.
Figure 12 is a vertical section through a box of the form of Figure 4.
Portions of the blank and also certain parts of the box embodying this invention have been designated in particular terms; however, these terms are used merely for the sake of convenience, and should not be construed as terms of limitation.
A box constructed accordance with this invention is made from a single sheet of material blanked to provide a front wall, a top wall, a rear wall, a bottom wall, and a"sec- 0nd or supplemental front wall, certain of the walls having interlocking end pieces and the second or supplemental wall having end pieces with tuck in flaps for tucking in against the rear wall to lock the parts into box-like form. The two front walls form a passageway from the interior of the box so that a web of material within the box may be readily withdrawn. Furthermore, the free margin of the second or supplemental front wall is provided with a tearing 06' blade which is preferably serrated to facilitate tearing off of the material within the box.
Figure 7 illustrates a blank from which the box illustrated in Figure 2 is made, and said blank includes five panels designated as follows: 1 a
Panel 1 is the second or supplemental front. Panel 2 is the bottom. Panel 3 the rear wall. Panel 4 the top, and panel 5 the front wall or short side wall. The blank is scored to enable folding of the several panels into boxlike form.
The height of the panel 5 is less than the opposite panel 3 to provide a withdrawal space for the web adjacent the front panels 1 and 5. Preferably, the height of the second front panel 1 is less than that of rear wall 3. The panels 1 and 5 overlap to some extent to provide a passageway for the paper web.
The second or supplemental front panel 1 is provided with end pieces 6 which end pieces in turn have tuck in fiap.s 7 scored along the lines 8, while the end pieces 6 are scored along the lines 9 and 10.
The panel 2 designated herein as the bottom panel is provided with end pieces 11 scored on the lines 9 and 10, and which end pieces are provided with shaped notches 12 in the margins adjacent the end pieces 6 of panel 1 for interlocking with other end pieces of -other panels, and also with inclined notches 13 in the end margins of the same.
Panel 3 designated herein as the rear wall has no end pieces of any character whatsoever, although it may be provided with end pieces if desirable. 7
Panel 4 designated as the top panel is provided with end pieces 14having tongues 15 therein extending obliquely from the scored lines 9 and 10, with one side of the tongue longer than the other, which tongue is made by a long slit 16 extending from the scored lines 9 and 10 beyond the free end of the tongue, and a short slit 17 joining the slit 16 near its outer end and terminating short of the lines 9 and 10.
The panel 5 designated herein as the front panel is provided with end pieces 18 which are out along lines 19 and 20 oblique and perpendicular, respectively, to the scored- lines 9 and 10, thus making irregular shaped end pieces.
Figure 8 illustrates a fragmental portion of av blank emploed to make the box of the form shown in igure 3, which blank is similar to that illustrated in Figure 7 except that the panel 5a has attached to it a plurality of scored strips 21 and 22 which may be bent as indicated in Figures 3 and 11 to serve as a skirt or guideway for the web of the material within the package.
Figure 9 is a fragmental portion of a blank employed to make the box of the form illustrated in Figure 4, and is similar in all respects to the blank in Figure 7 except that the front panel 56 in this instance is pro- The blank of Figure 7 is assembled into I box-like form as illustrated in Figures 1 and- 2 of the drawings by bending the various panels along the score and interlocking the end pieces 11 and 14 of the bottom and top panels 2 and 4 respectively, and then bringing the front panel 5 down in position as shown in Figure 2 and interlocking the end pieces 18 thereof with the interlocked end pieces 11 and 14, as illustrated in Figure 2.
The portion 11a of an end piece 11 is insorted in the slit 16 of overlapping end piece 14 and the pointed end 116 is hooked over the tongue 15 of end piece 14, thus looking together end pieces 11 and 14. The box or package is fastened as to the top, bottom and rear panels or walls with the front panels 1 and 5 unfastened. A roll A of paper or like material is then inserted and the'front panel or wall 5 is locked in position by. inserting the end pieces 18 between the outer surface of the exposed part of end piece 14 of panel 4 and the inner surface of the exposed part of end piece 11 of panel 2;
The web 24 of the roll A is pulled outwardly underneath the front wall 5 in the space provided, because of the shorter height of the wall 5.
The second or supplemental front wall 1 is then folded against the wall 5 and the end pieces 6 folded against the interlocked end pieces 11, 14 and 18 and then the tuck in flaps 7 are inserted against the inner surface of the rear wall 3 thereby locking the package in box-like form.
It will be observed that the front panel 5 is shorter than the rear panel 3 and therefore provides a space as clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings. The web 24 is projected a sufiicient distance to extend over the free edge of the second or supplemental wall 1 when the same is folded upwardly against the front panel 5 and interlocked in positlon 5 by tucking the flaps 7 against the inner surface of the rear wall 3, as illustrated in Figure 5. This arrangement provides a passageway between the front panel 5 and the second or supplemental panel 1 for withdrawal of 10 the web 24 of the material within the package or container.
Figure 3 shows a box embodying use of the two scored sections 21 and 22 formed as a part of the front panel 5 and which are bent inwardly as illustrated in Figure 11, and also in Figure 2 to serve as a curved end for the passageway between the front panel 5 and the second or supplemental front panel 1; otherwise, the box is constructed in the manner as heretofore described.
Figure 4 illustrates a box made with the single supplemental guide piece 23, as shown in Figure 9 and in use appears as shown in Figures 12 and 4.
The gist of the invention resides in the formation of a box from a single piece of material scored and folded to provide a front panel and a supplemental front panel, forming a passageway therebetween for withdrawal of the web of material within the container.
A tear ofl blade or cutting edge member 25 having preferably a serrated edge 26 is secured to the free edge of the second or supplemental front panel 1 and is arranged flush with the top edge of said front panel or a slight distance above the same, if desired but in any event below the surface of the top 4. The blade 25 aids in severing the desired length of material from the web 24, after the web has been withdrawn a sufficient amount to provide a piece of the desired size.
Should it be found necessary to open the box to replace the exhausted roll of material,
then the end flaps 7 of the end pieces 6 of the second or supplemental front panel 1 are withdrawn and the panel opened as shown in Figure 2, and then the end pieces 18 of the front panel 5 are unlocked, the panel then 0 raised and. a new roll of material inserted, ,whereupon the panel 5 is locked in position and the front or supplemental panel 1 replaced as heretofore described.
A package or box made in accordance with this invention may, because of the construction of the same, be made of thin and relatively inexpensive material. The formation of the box and the interlocking of certain end pieces provides a structure which is sufficiently rigid for the purpose intended, and one which may be used for a considerable period of time. A box embodying this invention is such as to readily enable the tearing oil of desired lengths of, material from the roll contained in the same with clean lines of severage as such tearing is done against the tear off strip 25 which may be a metal strip or of other material as desired.
A hole 27 is cut in the top and front walls 4 and 5 to enable grasping the free end of the web 24 of the paper for withdrawing the same. A flap 28 is formed in one of the other walls, here shown in the rear wall 3, whereby a thumb may be inserted to hold the roll A while tearing off a portion of the web 24.
The invention has been described herein more or less precisely, yet it is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited thereby, as changes may be made in the arrangement and proportion of parts and equivalents may be substituted without departing from thespirit and scope of the invention.
The invention is claimed as follows:
1.
