Ill., a corporation of Delaware Filed Sept. 1, 1961, Ser. No. 135,635 1 Claim. (Cl. 225-48) This invention relates to dispensing cartons of the type employed in the packaging of rolled sheet material.
The invention comprehends an improved dispensing carton for retaining a roll of sheet material and for severing and dispensing lengths of material from the roll by means of a cutting blade carried by the carton.
One object of the invention .is the provision of a dispensing carton with an attached cutting blade which is secured to a wall of the carton in such a way that the cutting edge of the blade is not exposed until the carton is opened for use by the ultimate consumer.
Another object of the invention is the provision, in a dispensing carton of the type described, of an improved tear strip means for opening the carton.
A more specific object of the invention is the provision, in a dispensing carton of the type described, of a closure flap with removable tuck and tear strip portions one of which conceals the cutting blade until the carton is opened for use.
These and other objects of the invention will be apparent from an examination of the following description and drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a dispensing carton embodying features of the invention;
FIGURE 2 is a partial vertical section taken on line 22 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a enlarged perspective view of a portion of the carton illustrated in FIGURE 1, with portions of the structure shown in section, and other portions broken away; and
FIGURE 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the carton of the other views may be formed.
It will be understood that certain elements have been intentionally eliminated from certain views, for purposes of clarity, where they are believed to be illustrated to better advantage in other views.
Referring now to the drawing, and particularly to FIG- URE l, for a better understanding of the invention, it will be seen that the carton, when in set-up form, comprises top and bottom wall panels and 12, respectively, which are interconnected by rear and front wall panels 14 and 16, respectively, to form an elongated generally tubular structure.
The carton may be formed from a single blank 13 of suitable sheet material, such as foldable paperboard, cut and scored to provide the previously mentioned panels, which are hingedly attached to each other along parallel score lines, as well as the additional panels and flaps hereinafter described.
As best seen in FIGURE 4, rear and front wall panels 14 and 16, and bottom wall panel 12 are provided at their ends with closure flaps 2t} and 22, respectively, which can be folded and tucked in a conventional manner, to close the ends of the carbon when it is in set-up condition.
It will be seen that the top wall or cover 10 of the carton is hingedly attached at its rear edge to the upper edge of rear wall 14. At its forward edge top wall panel 10 is hingedly attached to the upper edge of a depending outer front closure panel, indicated generally at 24.
The front closure panel 24 is disposed adjacent and in parallel relation with the outer surface of the carton front wall 16. As best seen in FIGURE 3, front closure panel 24 is provided on its opposite surfaces with a pair of vertically spaced, transversely extending cut scores 25 and 26, upper cut score 25 being in the outer surface of the panel and lower cut score 26 being in the inner surface of the panel. The function of these out scores is to provide for the ready separation or division of the front closure panel 24 into a pair of upper and lower portions 27 and 28, which constitute cover tuck flap and tear strip members, respectively.
As best seen in FIGURE 2 the front closure panel 24 and the front wall 16 are provided intermediate their ends with aligned mutually facing embossed or raised portions 30 and 32, respectively which abut each other and may be adhesively secured to each other by means of glue 34. In order to facilitate separation of the raised portions or glue areas from each other when the tear strip is torn from the cover tuck portion of the front closure panel one of the glue areas, preferably area 32 on the front wall, may be surrounded by or defined by a die cut 36 extending into the front wall.
Also to facilitate opening of the carton it will be noted that the corners of the tuck flap 27 may be rounded, as at 38, while the ends of the tear strip 28 are enlarged, as at 39, to provide a means of grasping the tear strip.
As best seen in FIGURE 2 all of the tuck flap portion of the front closure panel is free from attachment to the front wall 16 of the carton so that upon its separation from the tear st-rip portion it can be tucked inside the front wall of the carton upon reclosure. Also, the lower portion of the tear strip is free from attachment to the front wall of the carton and also extend a short distance below the lower edge of the front wall of the carton for a purpose hereinafter described.
In order to provide a means for tearing the roll of sheet material held in the carton into desired lengths there is attached to the front wall of the carton at its outer surface a cutting blade 40 which may be secured to the front wall of the carton in any desired manner as. by means of the crimps 42 and which is disposed at the lower edge of the front wall with the cutting edge 44 of the blade projecting a very slight distance below the lower edge of the front wall 16 of the carton. Thus, as the lower edge of the tear strip 28 projects below the lower edge of the front wall of the carton a short distance it completely covers the cutting edge 44 of the cutting blade 40 so as to prevent any injuries resulting from contact with the cutting edge.
Once the carton has been opened by the ultimate consumer by removal of the tear strip, the cutting blade is of course no longer concealed, and is in position for use in severing desired lengths of sheet material from the roll. Also, after the tear strip has been separated from the cover tuck portion of the front closure fiap and from the front wall of the carton, which is done simultaneously as the tear strip is pulled away, the tuck flap can be inserted as a closure flap in the carton behind the front wall, where it will remain with the free edge of the sheet material being withdrawn from the carton at a location between the front side of the tuck flap and the rear side of the front wall of the carton.
We claim:
A package for retaining a roll of sheet material and for severing and dispensing lengths of sheet material from said roll, comprising;
(a) a carton formed from a unitary blank of foldable paperboard cut and scored to provide a plurality of panels serially joined to form a tubular structure;
(b) said structure including front and rear walls spaced from each other to provide therebetween an opening at the top of the carton;
(0) a cutting blade fixedly attached to the outer surface of .the carton front wall and having its cutting edge projecting a slight distance below the lower edge of said front wall; and
(d) a carton cover including atop wall panel hinged at its rear edge to the upper edge of the carton rear wall and a closure panel having its upper edge hinged to the forward edge ofthe cover top wall panel;
(e) said closure panel depending from said top wall panel forward edge and being disposed to cover the entire front wall of the carton and said cutting blade before the package is initially opened by the consumer of the packaged material;
(f) said closure panel having a pair of readily separable upper and lower portions;
(g) said upper portion constituting a tuck flap insert- 4 able into the carton behind said front wall upon reclosure of the cover;
(h) said lower portion serving to cover said cutting blade prior to the initial opening of the package, and being removable upon separation from the closure panel upper portion upon initial opening of the package.
