FOLDING BOX OR CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 31, 1915.
Application filed July 29, 1914. Serial No. 853,795.
preventing them from shifting laterally and rising, and to form also receptacles for various articles as will be hereinafter set forth.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be.
varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a box in open out condition embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view thereof in partly made up condition. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal vertical section of the box in full made-up and closed condition on an enlarged scale.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a box which is composed of the bottom 2, side walls 3, end walls 4, the lids or covers 5 and the ledges or supplemental folds 6 which latter are inturned from the top of the ends 4 and are provided with clips 7 which are adapted to pass through openings 8, in the lids 5, so that when the box is madeup said lids may be connected with the ledges 6, and the box accordingly held in closed condition, the features per so being well known. The end walls 4 are in the narrow direction of the box, although they comprise the sides of the box in the direction at a right angle to the walls 3.
Connected with the terminals of the end walls 4 are the flaps 9 which are adapted to be turned angularly inwardly from said walls and meet and are such length as to form with said walls triangular-shaped figures over the bottom of the box, best seen in Fig. 2, said flaps being formed with slots 10 whose walls are adapted to be engaged and thus interlock the opposite flaps of each pair and retain them in the position in said Fi 2.
it will be seen that articles of w apparel may be placed on the bottom 2 of the box, and the flaps as interlocked superimposed thereon thus retaining said articles firmly on said bottom. The triangular shaped figures formed by the flaps and the ends 4 of the box may constitute pockets in which various articles for toilet, traveling, etc., may be placed and retained. Then the ledges 6 are turned on said flaps thus assisting to hold down the latter after which the lids and sidesof the box are raised, and the former turned over the ledges 6 and adjacent portions of the flaps 9, thus preventing the latter from rising and assisting in pressing down the flaps 6 upon the flaps 9 and consequently pressing the latter firmly upon the bottom of the box. When the several parts are placed in operative position and the box is thereby made up, the clips 7 on said flaps 6 are passed through the openings 8 in the covers or lids 5, the box or case is held in closed condition, as shown in 'Fig. 3. It is evident that when the fastening clips 7 are released. the lids 5 may be turned over, thus opening the box, as shown in Fig. 2.
For articles of wearing apparel longer than the length of the box, the end portions of the same may be brought up through the pockets and folded over the tops of the flaps 9 toward each other, when the lids press upon the portions of the folds of the apparel on said flaps 9 and the portions beneath the latter on the bottom of the box, thus most firmly holding the apparel in position, and preventing shifting of the same. The flaps 9 may be separated and all parts placed in the flat condition shown in Fig. 1 as in a knock down box, convenient'for storing, packing or other purposes.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a box, a bottom, end walls thereon, flaps on the end walls at the terminals thereof. said flaps being adapted to be fitted angularlv to each other on said bottom and provided with means for interlocking one with the other forming an open pocket on said bottom.
2. In a box, a bottom, end walls on said bottom, and flaps on the sides of said end walls adapted to be brought together from said sides over the bottom and detachably secured in angular position forming an open pocket on said bottom.
3. In a box, abottom, walls on the ends I thereof, flaps onthe sides of said end Walls continuous of the latter and adapted to be brought together on said bottom and connected forming with said walls open pocket to rest on said bottom.
4. In a box, a bottom, end Walls on said bottom, flaps on the sides of said end Walls adapted to be connected together on said bottom, said end walls having said flaps connected therewith, said flaps and walls being adapted to rest on said bottom and form an open pocket therewith.
5. In a box, a bottom, end walls on said bottom, flaps on the sides of said end walls adapted to be connected together on said bottom, said end walls having said flaps connected therewith, said flaps and walls being adapted to rest on said bottom and form an open pocket therewith, and a supplemental fold on said wall adapted to rest loosely on said flaps in their position on said bottom.
6. A box composed of a bottom, folds on the sides, walls on the ends thereof, lid members connected with the side folds of the bottom, and flaps on the sides of said end walls, said flaps being adapted to be brought together on said bottom and connected forming with the end wall open pockets which rest on said bottom, said lid members being adapted to be raised over said end wall of the bottom and the connected flaps.
7 A box composed of a bottom, folds on the sides, Walls on the ends thereof, lid members connected with the side folds of the bottom, and flaps on the sides of said end walls, said flaps being adapted to be brought together on said bottom and connected forming with the end wall open pockets which rest on said bottom, said lid members being adapted to be raised over said end wall of the bottom and the connected flaps, a sup plemental fold on the end wall of the bottom inturned therefrom and adapted to be imposed on said connected flaps and over which said lid members are adapted to be raised, and means for connecting said lid members with each other and said supplemental fold in the closed condition of the box.
