Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1915.
Application led April 29, 1914. Serial No. 835.269.
T o all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GiDEoN RIETVELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Marion, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to match boxes, and has particular application to a pocket match box which is stamped or otherwise formed from a single piece of sheet metal.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a match box which is made of a single sheet of metal, so cut and bent that there is but little waste of material in the process of manufacture.
Still a further object of my invention is the provision of a match box of this character which will embody in its construction the desired features of simplicity, efficiency, durability and strength, and which may be manufactured and marketed at a relatively low cost.
With the above recited objects and others of a similar nature in View, my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a perspective View of a complete match safe embodying my invention, the spring cover being shown in its open position. Fig. 2 is a view of the box in side elevation, with the cover in its closed position. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken through the box as shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken through the box. from which the box is made, the scoring or lines upon which the blank is to be bent being represented by dotted lines. Fig. 6 shows the blank in a partially folded position.
In the manufacture of my box I make use of a single piece of sheet metal which is so bent or folded that a complete box or casing is formed which is open at but one end, and that the top end, and in addition to this Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank I provide a spring cover which embraces a side wall adapted to overlie what may be called the back face of the box when the spring cover is in closed position, this cover terminating in an angular top plate which is adapted to overlie and constitute a closure for the open top end of the box or casing proper.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, and particularly to Fig. 5, the letter A designates the blank of sheet metal from which the box is to be formed. This blank is cut as shown in said Fig. 5, that is to say with the substantially rectangular section B which is to be folded to constitute the major portion of the casing or box proper', a relatively long tongue section C which extends from the section B and which tongue section when bent is to form the spring cover, and a pair of relatively small lips D which project from the section B at opposite sides of the tongue C, these lips or aps D-D being adapted to be bent inward as hereinafter described to constitute the bottom of the box or casing proper.
In forming the casing or box portion of the article, the rectangular section B of the blank is first bent or folded on the longitudinal parallel lines 1 1, so that two side sections 2-2 are formed at right angles to the central section 3, which latter forms the front of the box. Each side section 2 is in turn folded or bent inward on the central longitudinal line 4, so that the inward folded portions 5--5 of the blank will form the back of the box with their edges meeting. The blank now appears as shown in Fig. 6. The flaps D-D are now folded inward to form the bottom of the box. The tongue section C is then bent upward on the transverse line 7 and inward on the parallel transverse line 8 to form the end wall 9 which overlies the bottom of the box or casing` proper and which bottom is as herein stated made up of the flaps D-D. The tongue section C adjacent its free end is further folded or bent at right angles on the transverse line 10 so that the cover 11 is formed which constitutes a closure for the open top end l2 of the box or casing. This top cover 11 is further provided with a lug I3 which, when the cover is in its closed position is adapted to snap over and engage with the iwi top edge of tlie Wall 3 to lock the coyei1 in closed position and thereby retain and preserve tbe contents oi' the box.
Fi'oin the above description, tal-:en in connection with t'ne accompanying dna the construction and niannei of mali; d y improved one-piece spring coyei' inatcli box Will be readily apparent to tlioee skilled in the aft. will be noted that owing1 to the natural resiliency oi epiinginess oi"- the mateiial from which the box ie made and from the inannei1 in which the coyei fneet?.on C is foiinecb it is only neceeeaiy foi' the one Aaber, should he deeiie to open the box, to Quali up on the top section ll.,a when the lng- 13 will be released freni the 'top edge of the front of the bon and the entiie cover section C will spring backward Way from the box or casing. Likewise, when it 7,5 deeied to close the box, it is only neceesai'y foi the oneii'ator to piees tbe cover towaid the casing1 and thus snap the locking lng;` oyei' the top edge of the front andy thus securely close encli coyei'.
lt Will be noted that l llave provided an exceedingly simple, compact and vefficient forni oli' inatcli safeE which may be inade ifi-ein a single piece of metal, anc that the blank from which the box is formed ie to be so ont that there is comparatively little Waete. The coneequence ie that tlie box may be manufactured Veiy cheaply and consequently marketed at a Very lonT cost.
lWhat l claim is:
le an article of manufacture, a one-piece sheet metal box including a boinlile body portion havingI the front and back and eide Walls thereof oinied by folding` a substantially iectangulai1 piece of metal, the oppoeite eide edges o the ieotangulai' piece of metal meeting at the centei1 oi" the box, said body portion having a pail' of spaced intuined flaps constituting the bottom tlieieofq the "iee ende osaid iiape meeting at substantially the cential longitudinal line of the body portion, and a coyei" section iioil tbe bof; comprising a spying tongue having a latei'ally extending bottoni section lioiined integial Witli the front of the bofnlile body poition and bowed to oafei'lie the bottoni of suoli body portion, Said tongue also having n longitudinally extending Section adapted to oveilie the back of tbe box-like bcc y non tion, and a laterally extending' section at the iee end of the tongue adapted to omn a cove' for the bon-like body portion.
