To all whom it may concern:
FRED W. MOREY, OF EAST TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
LOCKING ATTACHMENT non. BOXES.
Specification of Letters iEatcnt.
Patented Aug. 25, 1914.
Application filed April 30, 1912. Serial No. 894,044.
Be it known that l, FRED W. Monnr, of East Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Attachments for Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in locking attachment for boxes, and the obect is to provide a locking attachment which cannot be unlocked except by mutilatin the box, thus preventing its reuse, so that oxes bearing trade names cannot be re filled by fraudulent persons.
In the drawings which illustrate a construction embodying my invention: Figure 1 is a perspective view with the cover open. Fig. 2 is an inside sectional view showing the locking attachment in position to hold the cover closed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of part of the box showing the flaps of the locking attachment in folded position. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the box before it is formed up.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.
' .The paper is first stamped out, as shown in Fig. 4t. Then the front and rear ends A and A are bent up and the front and rear locking attachments A? with their flaps A folded under are pressed through the slots A and A and then the ends A are folded up and the locking'attachment "A with the flaps A" folded under is passed through the slot A thus forming an inner cover for the box. The cover B withits-locking attachment B is brought over and the flaps B folded under, after which the locking attachment B. is passed through the slots C. "When these locking attachments have passed through the various slots the flaps spread out, as shown in Fig. 2, and the notches D engage the upper edges of the slots, and thus hold the parts of the box firmly together.
In practice there will be a dotted line, as shown at A with instructions to the consumer to cut on that line so as to allow the cover to be raised. This, of course, mutilates the box and the same cannot be used the edge of one of said sides at said turned over the edge of the other side,
again, thus necessitating the use of a fresh box and also preventing fraudulent per sons from using the box for inferior goods. The box may be made of any material desired.
I do not. limit myself to the arrangement of the construction shown, as the same may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention;
Having thus described the nature of my invention and set forth a construction embodying the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is,
A. knock-down paper boxhaving two of its sides folded so that their edges contact to form a corner of the box with one of such sides rovided with a slot extendlng approximate y parallel with said corner, a fold on corner and a tongue on the outer edge of said fold comprisinga main portion of a width approximately the same as the length of said slot and of flaps of comparatively large area extending laterally from the opposite sides of said main portion, said flaps being separated from the ed e of the adjacent fold by cuts of considera 1e width and having parallel edges, the said flaps being foldab e against said main portion 50 that the tongue with the folded flaps can pass throu 1 said slot, the said flaps operatlng to un old through the resiliency of the paper after the insertion of the tongue throu h the slot to preve nt'the withdrawal of the tongue, the said fold and tongue having comparatively large notches at the inner ends of the cuts separating the flaps of the tongue from the fold, said notches operating to engage the corners of the slot after the tongue has been inserted in the slot and the flaps have unfolded.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this first day of April, A. D. 1912.
FRED W. MOREY. Witnesses:
