SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,062, dated May 3, 1892. Application filed August 14, 1891- Serial No. 402,661- (No model.)

Beit known thatI, GEORGE E. HURD, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Boxes for Stationery, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The object of myinvention is to provide an improved box for holding stationery orother articles of a similar character.

The drawing shows a view in perspective of my said invention with the box open.

The main portion of the box, indicated in the drawing by the letter A, is formed by the bottom fand the sides acta, and is open at the top and on the fourth side. To the side ct of the main portion A, at the upper edge thereof, is hinged the cover 0, furnished with the lips c c c, which enable it when shut down to inclose the upper edges of the sides a and a" and the upper edge of the fourth side when the same is placed in position. To the bottom f of the main portion A, at its open edge, is hinged a shallow box B, intended to contain writing-paper or cards, the sides thereof b b b 12 set slightly within the edges of the bottom d and being adapted to pass within the main portion A, the effect of this construction being to enable the box 13 to be closed on the main portion A, the sides Z) b b" b" passing within it, and the bottom (Z forming a fourth side and completing the body of the box. The cover O is then closed, the lips c c c" inclosing the upper edges of the sides 0L a" d and holding the parts of the box together until they are released by opening the cover O on its hinges.

WVriting-paper or cards, with or without retaining-bands, is intended to be kept in the shallow box B, which is preferably adapted to fit a sheet of writing-paper on the bottom and made of a depth sufficient to hold the quantity that in a given case may be desired. The envelopes are intended to occupy the space between the open top of the shallow box B and the side a of the main portion A when the side d is in position and the box is closed.

My invention embodies a cheap, convenient, and attractive means for packing stationery for the retail trade, and is a convenience to the user, as when open for use it keeps e11velopes and writing-paper apart and at the same time within easy reach of the hand, and when not in use it folds into small compass.

I claim as my invention- In combination, a box open on two sides, having hinged to the bottom thereof at its open edge a shallow box with sides adapted to pass inside the larger box, and with a bottom adapted to form one side of the said larger box, and a cover hinged to one edge of said larger box, with lips adapted to fit over its upper edges, substantially as shown and described.
