APPLICATION FILED DEC. 27, 1910.
Patented May 23, 1911.
HENRY C. WALKER, 0F NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS, .ASSIGNOR TO WALKER- LONGFELLOW COMPANY,
MAINE.
OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION 0]? BOX.
Specification of Letters ratent. Patefited 23 1911.
Application filed December 27, 1910. Serial No. 599,476.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. WALKER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification. My invention is a combined calendar and stationery or stamp or memorandum box, made up out of two boxes or receptacles combined together'by a hinged cover piece.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my combination box open; Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of Fig. 1;
;Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my combination box closed; Fig. 4; is a perspective view of a part of the side wall, a, showing the slot (1 :r.
Receptacles for the holding of various articles, such as stamps, rubber bands, stationery or the like have been used heretofore, being either uncovered or covered by a cover of ordinary type. In my new box the main box may be made with one or more compartments and with manipulating slots in the'sides through which the fingers may easily reach the contents of any compartment to extract the contents thereof.
To one end of the open side of the main box is hinged a cover piece which is itself hinged at its other end to another box, one side of which is open. The two hinges work in opposite directions, that is to say, the hinge between the main box and the cover portion is arranged to permit the cover to swing upward while the hinge between the cover and the supplementary box opens in such a way that the ends of the cover and the supplementary box which are hinged together may be lifted up until the under side of the cover and the supplementary box approach one another.
In the. drawings'A is the main box; a and a the side and end walls respectively of the main box; at are the slots to permit access to the edges of papers -or the like within the box; I) is the lid; C is the supplementary box, the lid or cover I) being hinged to the box A- at the line and the supplementary box C being hinged to the lid or cover at line 2, any suitable structure capable of acting as a hinge connection between the parts bemg employed.
Thesupplementary box C is open upon one side, at d, and has an aperture (1' upon one side through which may be inserted a number of calendar. cards which may be shifted from month to month-and the calendars, printed upon the calendar cards, viewed through the opening 03. In 0 eration the cover 6 is turned upward as s own in Fig. 1 carrying up with it one side of calendar box C, the lower side of the calendar box C drawing along the upper edges of walls a until the free edges of the calendar box drops into notches a w in the side walls, a, of the box, A, to sustain the calendar box and cover in the open position. In this position the main box A is 0 en for holding and delivering articles while the calendar cards are held in position in calendar box C for observation through the aperture d. By merel lifting the ends of the calendar box out o the notches, the cover will close itself by gravity, a wall I) at one end of the cover .6 closing the slot 03' in the side of the calendar box so that the calendar cards cannot work outof the calendar box. In the best form of my device the front or upper side of the calendar box projects and laps over the end of the cover piece I) when the cover and calendar box are closed upon top of the main box A andthis extension, 0Z may be used as a handle for lifting the cover by swinging it upward, the application of such force resulting in throwing the cover 6 in one direction and the calendar box in an-- 2. The \'double box, made up of a body box; a cover piece hinged thereto to permit the cover pieceto be lifted and a second box hinged to the cover piece to permit it to fold down toward the under side of the cover piece and having an aperture through its upper side to expose the\contents thereof.
3. The double box made up of a body box a cover piece hinged thereto to permit the cover to be lifted and a second box hinged close the second aperture when the double to the cover piece to permit it to fold down box is closed. toward the under side ofthe cover piece I Signed by me at Boston, Massachusetts, and having an aperture through its upper this 21st day of December, 1910.
side to expose the contents thereof, and a HENRY C. WALKER. second aperture adjacent the cover piece Witnesses:
hinge for the insertion of cards into the box, OLIVER MITCHELL,
the cover piece having a wall adapted to Josnrn T. BRENNAN.
