UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENNET OSBORN, OF NFVARK, NEV JERSEY.
PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,076, dated December 10, 1889. Application tiled April l2, 1889. Serial No. 307.003. (No model.)
material of a shape corresponding to that of the box proper, scored at the corners, and of sufliciently less dimensions to admit of the securing thereto of a strip of straw-board or the like d at the bot-tom, oi' proper thickness to make room for the lip of the cover. This strip C forms a bearing for the ends of the cover and is set close back against the back of the main box, or box proper, to stiften the whole box, and particularly the back of the box, where the cover is hinged. i
For the loosecover box-sueh as is shown in Fig. .-^the strip C must be set in the center of the box proper all round, so as to leave space for the flange of the cover upon all four sides, or sometimes upon two onlyfor instance, two sides or the two ends, the cover being made to correspond therewith. In the form of box with loose cover the strip d will extend all around the inner strip C, to strengthen and unite the inner strip and the box proper, (see Fig'. 2,) and the two opposite sides will preferably be provided with a cutaway portion to allow the hands or lingers thereof to readily grasp the sides of the cover.
To @ZZ who/1t it may concern.'
Be it known that I, BENNET OSBORN, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Newark,l in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes; and I do hcreby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in. paper boxes of that class provided with a lip on the lid to hold the same in place; and it has for its objects to improve upon such class of boxes and to construct a box in which the cover will be securely held in place and prevented from be ing easily opened in handling.-
The novelty resides in the peculiarity of construction and the arrangement and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the lct- A paper box composed of the outer box, ters of reference marked thereon, form a the cover hinged thereto at one side, the inpart of this specification, and in whichner strip C within the box, with one side se- Figure l is a perspective view of a box emcured in close contact with the side of the bodyingmyimprovements, parts being broken outer box to which said cover is hinged, and away to better disclose the construction. the opposite side of said strip set at a dis- Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the tance from the adjacent side of the outerbox center of a box embodying my improvements, to leave a space for the depending flange of differing from Fig. l only in having a removthe cover, and the strip d, secured between able cover instead of a hinged one. r the strip and side of the box opposite that Referring now to the details of the drawto which the cover is hinged, substantially as ings by letter, A designates the body of the r shown and described. box proper, the front side of which is provided l In testimony that I claim the above I have with the cut-away portion a, and to the rear hereunto subscribed my naine in the presside of which is hinged in any suitable manl ence of two witnesses. ner the cover B, the front end of which is BENNET OSBORN.
