UNITED sTAgrEs WALLACE S. WHITCOMB, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
PASTE -RE CE PTACLE Speccaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 17, 1907.
Aipplication iiled October 4,1906. Serial No. 337,397-
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALLACE S. WHrrooMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin,l have invented new and useful Improvements in PasteRecep tacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to the class of paste receptacles having provision for what is commonly known as a water-well or brush compartment. Its objects are to produce a device of this nature which in a simple but efficient manner provides a brush re` ceptacle which permits keeping the brush entirely within the jar thus saving space in packing for transportation and permitting the addition to the cover of a spring-controlled Hap.
Further objects are to simplify the construction and lessen the cost of manufacture of paste receptacles of this class.
It consists in certain novel features of construction and in the peculiar arrangement and combinations of parts hereinafter'particularly described and set forth in the claims. l
In the accompanying drawing like letters designate the same parts in the several figures.
Figure l is a vertical section on line l--l Fig. 2. Fig- 2 isa plan view of the preferred form of my device with the cover removed, and Fig. 3 is a similar view of another form of the invention.
Referring to Figs. l and 2, a represents a jar preferably made of glass in the form of a cylinder having a screw top b tting the threaded upper portion of the same. The inner wall of the jar is formed with guides c-c as best shown in Fig. 2. The guides are angular in cross-section andare preferably formed integrally with both the side and bottom walls of the jar eX- tending almost to the top of the jar leaving suiiicient space to permit the user to grasp the projecting handle of the brush d. The guides form ways into which a suitably bent or curved section e of aluminium, Celluloid or other suitable material is forced, forming a brush compartment f. The section e may be made of curved glass but material such as aluminium or Celluloid is preferred for the reason that a straight flat piece of this material forced into the guide ways will have a tendency to assume its normal shape thus holding it securely in place. A groove g is formed in the inner surface of the bottom wall ofthe jar and is curved to follow the shape of the section e into which the latter fits as a further aid in keeping the same in a vertical position.
Fig. 3 illustrates a variation of my invention, the projections .c-c having grooves c/-c formed therein into which a straight section e may be slipped being thus held securely in place. The projections are sufficiently separated to form a brush compartment large enough to hold a flat brush. In this figure the bottom groove is not shown as this may or may not be used without departing from my invention.
In practice it is desirable to have water in the chamber f, to the depth of about half an inch at least and while no means are shown to keep the compartment water tight, it has been proved in practice that as long as there is paste left' in the jar the brush compartment will hold water, the tightly molded paste preventing leakage. However it may be found desirable to run melted paraflin in the edges and bottom of the compartment while the jar is being assembled, to prevent possible leakage.
The cover b has a circular aperture therein almost if not quite the diameter ofA the jar which is covered with a iiap h hinged to the cover b at i and having at one edge opposite the hinge a downwardly and outwardly projecting portion j fitting over a slight projection on the cover b the outwardly projecting part serving as a handle to permit throwing back the flap. The hinge i is spring-controlled and upon release of the edge j the flap will open and present the surface of the paste ready for use. The under surface of the flap h may be lined with thin felt or similar material to make the closure air tight. n
In assembling the paste jars it is advisable to place a piece of oiled paper between the top of the jar and cover b which may be removed by the consumer when he purchases the paste, the lined flap serving the purpose of keeping the jar air-tight.
Various changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the principle and intended scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. A paste receptacle having a removable section adapt' ed with the side and bottom walls of the receptacle. to form a brush compartment.
2. A paste receptacle having guide Ways formed therein and a section fitting in the guide ways adapted with the side and bottom Walls of the receptacle to form a brush compartment inthe same.
3. In a lpaste receptacle comprising a side wall having guide ways formed integrally therewith, a removable section in the Ways adapted to form with the side wall and bottom, a brush compartment in the receptacle.
4. A paste receptacle having inwardly projecting guide ways formed integrally with the side Wall thereof, a groove formed in the bottom, and a removable section fitting in the guide ways and groove.
5. In a paste receptacle, guide Ways formed in the inner side and bottom walls, and a section fitting in the guide ways adapted to form a brush compartment extending from the bottom nearly to the top of the receptacle.
G. In a paste receptacle, the combination of a side-Wall having grooves forming guideways, a removable section fitting in the grooves forming with the side and bottom Walls a brush receptacle, an open-top screw cover forthe receptacle, and a springcontrolled flap, hinged to` the screw cover, adapted to close the opening in the top of the paste receptacle.
7. In a paste receptacle the combination of inner walls having guide Ways formed therein, a removable section adapted to form one wall of a brush-compartment, the inner surface of the receptacle forming the other Walls, a screw top for the receptacle having. an aperture therein, and a spring controlled closure hinged to the screw top adapted to cover the aperture in the same.
S. The combination in a paste receptacle, of a sidewall having longitudinally extending grooves forming guide ways and a bottom having a groove in its inner surface, n removable section tting in the gnideways and in the groove formed in the inner surface of the bottom,
the said section forming with the side walls and bottom a brush compartment, a cover for the receptacle fitting around the outside of the upper edge of the same, and a spring-controlled flap hinged to the cover and adapted to Witnesses:
