RECEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented out. 22,1907.
Application filed May 15, 1906. Serial No. 316,996.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM T. Summons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha in the county of Douglas, State of Nebraska, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to receptacles such as dredging boxes, salt and pepper receptacles, lye receptacles and the like. i
In some instances, manufacturers have formed the receptacles in which they ship their goods, so that the receptacle may also be employed for dispensing the goods-directly from the can. However, difiiculty has been experienced in closing the openings through which the goods are dispensed, the jar in shipment in many instances, causing the closure to be broken, as
when the openings are closed by paper being pasted thereover; or to be separated from the receptacle when a: disk is fitted within a depression surrounding the dispensing openings.
It is one object of my invention to provide a means for holding the dispensing opening closure or disk so that it will not be separated from the can when the can is subjected to rough usage.
Another obiectoi my invention is to improve the construction of receptacle closures adapted for that type of air tight receptacles in which a plug-shaped closure fits within an opening in the receptacle, said opening being surrounded by 'a depending elastic flange.
Other and further objects will appear in the following description and will bemore particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical s'ectionof the upper portion of a receptacle and its closure with a disk fitted over the dispensing openings. Fig. 2 is a perspective yiew, of the closure with the disk partly removed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of another embodiment of the disk holding means. i
Iteferringmore particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a metallic receptacle, the top of which is providd with a central opening surrounded by a depending elastic flange 12 which tapers slightly downwardly. Fitted within this openingis a plug closure 2 formed of a depressed portion having a limiting flange 3, all of which are of known construction. This closure 2 is provided with a plurality of perforations 4, in the bottom of the depressed portion, and over these perforations is fitted a disk*5 of cardboard or other flexible material. This disk 5 may contain advertising matter or may serve as a coupon to be redeemed when a certain number is secured. I provide means for securing this disk within the depression in the top. This means may consist of an annular bead 6 which projects over the edge of the disk 5 from the inner side walls of the depression such a distance as to permit the disk to yield past the same in removing or in placing the disk. The bead is formed by depressing an annular groove 7 around the plug closure. Annular groove 7 acts to hold the plug closure within the receptacle opening, as when'the plug closure is completely fitted within the receptacle opening, the end of the depending elastic flange 12 enters the groove and locks the plug against accidental displacement. Of course, the flange yields and permits the removal of the closure when a sharp Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
The combination with a receptacle having an opiplng surrounded by a depending smooth flange, of a depr ssed plug closure adapted to be fitted in said opening and provlded with perforations in its bottom and an annular 1nturned head on its periphery to receive the ends or the depending flange, and a disk fitted 1n the depressed portion over the perforations and held by the lnturned bead.
The foregoing speclflcatlon signed at Omaha Nebraska this 5th day of May, 1906.
