Description

--(No Model.) I
v P.P.HARNED; SAFETY PACKAGE.
No.- 544,729. Patented Aug. 20,1895.
5 0x 6 j d UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK P. HARNED, OF PHILADELPHIA," PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE PENN CHEMICAL WORKS, 0E SAME PLAcE.
SAFETY PAC km E.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 544,729, dated August 20, 1895 Application filed June 22,1895. Serial No. 553,657. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK P. HARNED, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Packages, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention has relation to a safety package or can for containing pulverized lye, potash, or matter in other form to insure safe carriage as Well as ready discharge of the same from the can or package without contact of the hands therewith, spilling or waste thereof.
My invention consists of a safety package or can constructed and arranged in substantially the manner hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof,
and in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the detached parts of the safety package or can of my invention; and Fig. 2 is a vertical central section through the can or package.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a can or other suitably shaped package, of metal or other preferred material, having an integral or applied bottom a, and the package or can recessed at a, about the upper edge, to form a channel for a cover B, with a recessed rim 1), which is adapted to be sprung or otherwise secured into the recessed portion a of the can or package A. The cover B is provided with an aperture b, into which is inserted and held snugly therein a smooth-surfaced countersunk and flanged stopple O, preferably of the type clearly illustrated detached from its seat in the cover B in Fig. 1, and in operative or seated position in Fig. 2, of the drawings.
ting snugly against the edges 5 and b of the recessed rim b of the cover B, and contacting also with the surface of the can at a as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, whereby is provided a safety can or package in which lye, potash, or other matter can be safely carried and from which they may be readily removed without spilling, waste, or contact of the .fin= gers therewith or any necessity to destroy any part of the can to gain access to the interior of the same;
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A safety package, comprising a can or the like, provided with a perforated cover sprung onto or secured to the can, a countersunk and flanged-stopple detachably fitting the opening of said cover and a flanged sealing cap for'said canand adapted to hold said stopple in operative position in said cover, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A safety package, comprising a can provided with a recessed upper portion, a perforated cover with a recessed rim fitted to the recessed portion of said can, a countersunk and flanged stopple detachably fitting the opening of said cover and a flanged sealing cap fitting'down onto said stopple and recessed rim of said cover and onto said can, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK P. EARNED.
