FASTENING DEVICE.
Application filed March 18, 1922. Serial No. 544,904.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that SYLVESTER RAPHAEL, citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fastening devices. More particularly, it is directed to a fastening device that may be employed to securely seal packages or boxes in such manner as to prevent theopening of the package or box without breaking the box or the seal.
The object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described which shall be exceedingly cheap to manufacture, simple and neat in construction, easy to manipulate and eflicient in operation to a Another object is to provide a device of the character described in the form of a unitary construction that may be easily ap plied to any receptacle or container for the purpose of fastening the cover thereto or sealing the same. l
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts whiclr will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which is shown one of various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a developed view of the brace or supporting member forming part of my new fastening device;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing this brace member as it appears after the mate rial has been folded and showing also the fastening member in position ready to be inserted; and
Fig. 3 isa vertical cross-sectional view of a box with the cover thereon sealed or fastened at each end by the embodiment of my invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and showing one fastening member already in place and the other fastening member being pushed into. place.
Referring in detail'tothe drawing, the invention will be described as ap lied to a box 10 having a coverll. Openings 12, 12 are provided in the face of the cover 11 for the purpose hereinafter described.
The fastening device comprises a supporting memberl3 preferably formed from a blank of resilient material adapted to be bent into a bracket. having a vertical attaching member 14, and a horizontal support 15' bent at right angles thereto, and an angular brace portion 16 from which extends a short vertical portion 17 bent parallel to the attaching member 14 and adapted to be flush therewith so as to strengthen the brace. Th corresponding portions of the blank are designated by the same reference numerals on Fig. 1, the dotted lines in said figure being the lines along which the blank is bent, as will be readily understood. The portion of the blank corresponding to the attaching member 14 is provided with perforations 18 whereby the bracket may be secured in place in the box or receptacle or other container or package. In the application of the invention shown in Fig. 3, rivets 19 pass through these openings 18 and the side walls 20 of the box to secure the supporting member of the device in position with the corners thereof. The horizontal support 15 serves as the female member of the fastening device and is provided for this purpose with a central opening 21, and the portion of the blank 15 is slit to either side of this opening by parallel cuts 22, 22', and 23, 23-, for a substantial distance up to points 24, 24 25, 25 spaced somewhat from the ends of the horizontal support 15. 26 of the opening which are parallel to the side edges of the supporting member 15. There is thus formed to either side of the opening a pair of resilient members 27, 27 which may be separated along the slits 22, 22', 23, 23'. 1 The fastening member comprises a thumb portion 28, a shank 29 having horizontal projections 30, 30 extending in the same plane to either side thereof, and spaced from the thumb portion. A tapered head member 31 extends from the end of the shank with the wider portion thereof extending from the end of the shank so as to provide horizontal walls 32, 32' extending to either side of the shank parallel to the projections 30, 30 and spaced therefrom so as to include a recess or notch 33, 33',
The operation of the fastening dev1ce will now be clear. The supporting member 13 is secured in th? QQP er of the box to be sealed in any suitable manner such as that already described, so that the female portion of the fastening device is disposed opposite the openings 12, 12' provided in the cover. The cover is placed on the box and then the fastening member is inserted in the openings 12, 12', and as the head portion 31 thereof comes into contact with the resilient slitted portions 27 27', it is forced downward by pressure with the thumb on the thumb-piece 28 causing the members 27, 27 to bend downward as shown in Fig. 3 with their free ends forced along their inclined walls 34, 34: of the head member.
When the head member'has advanced into the box, and the cover cannot be removed without in some way mutilating the box as by cutting out the material around the fastening device, or some such other way.
"While the invention has been described with reference to a box ada ted to be closed by a loose cover, it will e readily clear that the fastening device herein provided may be applied to different types of covers or box and package, the same fastening member being employed and the same support for the fastening member, with the exception of course that provision would have to be made for securing the support in position in the container or rece tacle or package by means best suited to t e construction of the given receptacle, container, etc.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent v 1. In a fastening device for a receptacle having a closure provided with at least one opening, the combination of a support having an attaching member whereby the former may be secured to the receptacle and a resilient member extending therefrom, and having an o ening therein in registry with the opening 1n the closure, the material adjacentsaid opening in said resilient member being slit away therefrom fora sufiicient distance to provide yieldable engaging members, and a fastening member adapted to enter said openings in the closure and said 'resilient member and having means thereon for positively engaging with said engaging members.

In a fastening device for a receptacle having a closure provided with at least one opening, the combination of a 5113p port having an attaching member whereby the former may be secured to the receptacle and a resilient member extending therefrom, and having an opening therein in registry with the opening in the closure, 1
