Description

Patented Oct. 17, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CLOSURE FOR CONTAINERS Marjorie Freeman, St. John, Wash.
Application May 9, 1947, Serial No. 747,027
1 Claim. 1
The present invention relates to closures for containers and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of partsherein described and claimed.
Generally, the invention comprises a simple structure providing a handy closure for cartons and other containers of the cardboard type. It consists in the provision of a pair of guide edges between which is slidablv mounted a cover which is provided with a metallic outwardly extending arm which may be bent over the side of the package in shipping.
It is an object of the invention to [provide a simple, inex ensive and efiicient closure for cartons and other containers.
A further ob ect of the invention is the provision of a device of the character described wherein conventional box structure may be utilized as a part of the invention.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a novel handle structure for the closure of a carton or the like.
Other and further objects of the invention will become a parent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
Figure .1. is a plan view of an embodiment of the nvention,
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantialy along line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken along line 3--3 of Figure l, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary plan view of an element of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein a carton II] formed of cardboard or the like and having its top formed with inturned edges i I on three of its sides. To the inturned edges l l is glued a frame member I 2 which is provided with a rectangular opening I 3 which is adapted to be placed adjacent the edge of the box having no inturned flap. Adjacent the opening l3 and extending along the sides thereof is a pair of guide members 14 which are glued as indicated at I5 to the outer edges of the box.
Slidably mounted upon the frame [2 and underlying the guide members M is a closure 16 which has centrally attached to it by means of staples I! or the like a horizontally extending arm l8 preferably formed of metal. The free extremities of the arm l8 may be bent over the edge of the box IE! as indicated at l9 when the box is packaged for shipment and a guide member 29 preferably formed of a single staple may be provided adjacent the outer edge of the box.
In operation, it will be apparent that once the outer wrapping of the box It! is removed that the extremity l9 may be bent to any convenient position or, if preferred, may be utilized in its bent position to draw the closure IE to the right as viewed in Figure 1 thereby providing an opening through which the contents of the box may be poured or otherwise dispensed. It will also be apparent that the sides of the opening I3 and the guide members M provide therebetween guide passages for the slidable operation of the closure 16.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A closure for boxes and the like comprising, in combination, a box top having inturned edges upon three of its sides, a frame attached to the upper sides of the inturned edges and having a rectangular opening in that side thereof adjacent the side of the box top not having an inturned edge, a guide member attached to each side of the upper face of the frame adjacent the side having the opening therein, a cover slidably mounted between the guide members and the frame, and a metallic handle centrally aifixed to the cover and extending to a finger grip bent over the opposite end of the box.
