JACOB G. BAUER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
KNOCKDOWN PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 326.705, dated September 22, 1885.
Application filed March 23, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JACOB O. BAUER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Knockdown Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates, espeoially,to that class of knockdown boxes which have side openings for the introduction or removal of the contents of the box, the object of my invention being to construct a strong and convenient box of this character.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a knockdown box constructed in accordance with my invention, part only of the lid being'shown; Fig. 2, a transverse section of the box; Fig. 3, a view showing the same partially folded; Fig. 4, an enlarged perspective view of part of the box and lid, and Fig. 5 a view showing a modi- Ordinary knockdown paper boxes are open only at the ends, and when such boxes are made of large size-such, for instance, as those intended for packing shirts and other garments-the introduction or removal of the contents of the box is difficult, owing to the contracted area of the opening afforded by the open end of the box. Moreover, the end flaps must be unfastened and fastened up again whenever anything is to be placed in or removed from the box.
Knockdown boxes have been, made with openings in the side in order to overcome these objections; but when an opening is made in the side of the box the structure is weakened to such an extent that a special construction of the box is necessary in order to impart to the structure the proper rigidity.
In carrying out my invention, therefore, I construct the box as shown in the drawings, on reference to which it will be observed that the box has a rectangular body comprising sides A A and B B, internal end flaps, F F, and folded end flaps, D D, confined by a rubber band, a. On releasing the outer end flaps,
(N0 model.)
D, from the control of the rubber band,(which is carried by the inner end flaps, D,) said flaps and the internal flaps, F, can. be folded out longitudinally, and the box can then be flattened down laterally, as shown in Fig. 3. In one of the sides A of the box is formed an opening of almost the entire area of said side, comparatively narrow flanges, I), being left at the sides and ends of the opening. To the side flanges b are secured by cement or by metal clips, eyelets, or other suitable means, an outer strip, (2, and a filling-piece, f, thelatter being less in width than the strip d, so that said strips d and the flanges 1) form opposite grooved guides for the sliding lid J.
A box constructed in this manner can be folded as readily as an ordinary box, the guidestrips and lid offering no obstacle to such folding, but said guidestrips serving to so stiffen the narrow flanges b as to compensate in a great measure for the weakening of the side of the box by the cutting of the opening therein, and I prefer to place on the inside of the flanges b supplementary strengthening or stiffening pieces 9, as shown in Fig. 4.. The double end flaps, D D, and cornerbraces F F also serve to impart rigidity to the structure.
If desired, both sides A A of the box may be furnished with sliding lids, as shown in Fig. 5.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the sliding lid with a box having folding ends and a side opening with opposite flanges b b, strips d, and filling-piecesf, as specified.
2. The combination of the sliding lid with a box having folding ends,a side opening, flanges b b, strips (Z, filling pieces f, and strengthening-strips g, as set forth.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAOOB O. BAUER.
