UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIGE.
WILLIAM GLADSTONE McPI-IERSON, OF EAST BRUNSWICK, AND ALFRED HENRY CROCKFORD, OF PRESTON, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA.
MANUFACTURE OF CARDBOARD AND OTHER BOXES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 21, 1916.
Application filed December 9, 1915. Serial No. 65,974.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM GLADSTONE MoPnnnsoN, of No. 72 John street, East Brunswick, and ALFRED HENRY CROGKFORD, of Cooper street, Preston, both in the State of Victoria, Commonwealth of Australia, British subjects, have invented new and use ful Improvements in the Manufacture of Cardboard and other Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention of improvements in the manufacture of card board and other boxes is applicable mostly to either the collapsible or non collapsible type of card board, papier-mach, leather-board or other like boxes, in the former case the collapsibility being brought about by providing a diagonal crease in the bottom and in two opposite sides of the box, while further improvements in said boxes relate to means for strengthening and supporting the upper flanges of the box and also to means for securing the lid or cover in its closed position and at same time retaining the flanges in proper position.
The improvements will now be fully described aided by a reference to the attached sheet of drawings in which like letters of reference will denote like parts throughout and in which drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box showing the improved means for forming and strengthening the upper flanges, and in dotted lines the collapsible creases and one form of lid, and Fig. 2 a plan of the blank from which a box such as in Fig. 1 is formed, while Fig. 3 shows the box folded down or collapsed, the last two figures being drawn to a lesser scale than Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an exterior view of the upper flange of a box as folded at the corner when the flange is a continuous piece and Fig. 5 an interior view of the folded down corner of said upper flange. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of and Fig. 7 an inner face view of the tongue or bracket piece for supporting the inner length of the flanges when lying flush with the top edge of box. Fig. 8 a further alternative means for supporting the upper flanges with a cord which also serves to se cure the lid or cover and for carrying the box.
In carrying out this invention, the side portions A of the box are bent or creased at a at a depth equal to that which the box is take, one or more sides having a pro. jecting portion B which forms the cover or lid, or a portion of it, or a narrow ledge b to which said cover or lid is secured, the bottom C being scored or bent at c or formed with narrow ledges a while the diagonal dotted lines a and 0 represent the creased lines made in the sides and bottom respectively to allow of the box being folded or collapsed as shown in Fig. 3.
In some instances, three of the sides, in a box having an attached cover or lid in one piece, are made with an extra inch or inch and a half of material to leave an upper margin or flange a which is bent inward as shown, and at each of the upper corners of the boards forming the box, diagonal seams are provided in the top flanges which lap over one another as shown at a and thus greatly strengthen the box and prevent its collapsing. Also the meeting edges of the sides and bottom of the box may overlap and be stapled together at c to provide increased strength and rigidity. The flanges are also creased about midway of their length in a line with the side creases a so that when the boxes collapse or are folded down flatwise said flanges will also lie flat.
In the case where the sides of the box have not an integral lid or cover, the latter being made independent then the box may have either four or two flanges a formed by the extended portions of the opposite sides of the box and in which case these sides are made deeper than the others, and at about an inch or so from their top edges a are bent at right angles as shown in Figs. 6 and 7 thus enabling them to bend downward to form flanges to strengthen the box and ofler no obstruction to the employment of an ordinary lift-ofl lid. The sides also have end ledges a for covering or securing the adjoining corners.
Another type of box is constructed in which by the extension of two of its opposite sides, as shown by dotted lines B Fig. 1 two hinged, half-lids or covers are provided.
To further support the top flanges the upper part a of each side of the box is bent over from a seamed or creased line forming the top edges of box and each flange has a projecting tongue or tongues D with enlarged button end or ends d and which tongue piece is adapted to pass out through an upper slot at and then again into the box through a lower slot (Z thereby retaining the flanges flush with the upper edges of box. As a further means for securing the aforesaid lid or cover which is usually made in two parts overlapping each other at center of box, a hole E is made in the two opposite flanged sides of the box at a position about two inches below the flange and one end of a string or cord E is threaded through said hole from inside of box, then passed over and tied to the string Within the box, the other end of the string being passed from the inside outward through the said hole and drawn taut until the flange assumes its proper position. Upon the string being so secured at each side of box, the lid B may be closed down and the two lengths of cord E secured together above the up per lid, thus said cord serves to secure the lid and also as a means for carrying the box. Said two part lid may also be furnished with the usual end tags or buttons as F, so that those on one part of the lid will take into slots F on the other part of lid and thus secure them together.
Having now described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s 1- A collapsible box of the type specified 1;
comprising a bottom and two opposite sides in one piece, the bottom being creased from diametrically opposite corners and said sides creased upon lines parallel with the crease of the bottom and said sides formed at the upper edges with inwardly extended flanges provided with projecting tongues extended outwardly through an upper slot and thence inwardly through a lower slot and provided with enlarged ends whereby said tongues form inclined braces for the flanges and the flanges form reinforcements for the upper edges of the box, and ends secured to said sides.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence oftwo subscribing witnesses.
