To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AnoLrH VoN SCHLUEMBAGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, county of Blair, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Paper Boxes, of which the following'is a specification.

My invention relates to paper boxes and has particular reference to collapsible paper boxes.

More specifically my invention relates to collapsible paper boxes formed of a folded blank. I

The object of my invention is to provide a paper box of the class mentioned adapted for any use to which it is desired to apply the same and which shall be provided with interlocking members for holding the same in folded position and of such construction that the interlocking portions shall be invisible when the box is in condition for use.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the class mentioned provided with partitions dividing the same into several compartments, the said partitions being formed integrally with the other portions of the blank.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

With these objects in view my invention consists generally in a box formed of a blank scored and folded to form a bottom, front and back and a pairof end flaps at each end equippedwith interlocking means for holding the box body in folded position and separate end flaps adapted to be folded over the outer face of the first said end flaps bent over the upper edgesthereof and outwardly upon the inner face thereof.

My invention further consists in a box as mentioned further characterized by providing the front of the box with an additional flap adapted to be folded against the inner face of the front with its edges impinging against the inner auxiliarly flaps at the ends to hold the latter in position.

My invention further consists in a box as mentioned further characterized by partition members formed uponv the inturned flaps and adapted to be arranged to divide the interior of the box into a plurality of compartments.

My invention further consists in providing the auxiliary end flaps with inturned corner flaps adapted to reinforce the corners of the box.

My invention further consists in various details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.

My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying my invention, the same being illustrated with the lid or closure in open position, Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal section through one end of the box, Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the box is folded, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the box in partially folded position, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of the box in partially folded position, Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank from which the modified form is constructed, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the completely folded box with the lid or closure opened.

Referring now to the drawings 1 indicates the blank from which the form of box illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive is constructed. This is cut and scored to form a bottom 2, front and

5 and 5, a lid or closure 6, auxiliary end flaps 7 and 7' and an auxiliary front flap 3'. The size of the box is determined by the dimensions of the portions, 2, 3, 4 and 7.

3 and 4, the top 6 and the auxiliary front flap 3' are formed in alinement and that the

7 and 7 are formed in alinement transversely of the first mentioned portions and that the

end flaps

5 and 5 are formed integrally and project laterally from the front and

back members

3 and 4 and are separated from the auxiliary end flaps 7 by cutting, as indicated by the line 8. It will be noted that the line 8 is off-setas at 9 forming fiaps 10 on the edges of the portion 7 for a purpose hereinafter described. The

5 and 5 aremore than half the width of the box in order that their ends shall overlap, and the overlapping ends are provided with interlocking portions which may be of any preferred form. As shown, I have provided the flap 5 with an inwardly extending tongue 11 and the flap 5 with a slot 12 to receive the tongue 11. In folding the box the blank is first bent on the lines of scoring 2 separating the bottom from the front and back portions and then the

5 and 5 are bent inwardly on the lines of scoring 4 and the tongues 11 are engaged through the slots 12 as shown in Fig. 4. The corner flaps 10 are then folded in as shown in Fig. 4. to reinforce the corners of the box and the flaps 7 folded upwardly against the outer faces of the

flaps

5 and 5; and the flaps 7 are then turned down against the inner face of the

flaps

5 and 5 thereby completely covering the said end flaps and the fasten ing means 11-12. The auxiliary front flap 3 is then folded inwardly and engages at its edges the flaps 7 holding the same in position. It should be noted that the flaps 10-are not out the full-width of the flaps 7 as the end flaps 5 and 5' are co-extensive in length with the width or height of the flaps 7 and by so cutting the same the end flaps would be spaced throughout their length at a distance from the bottom of the box thereby permitting the said flaps to sag. By cutting the flaps 10 but a portion of the width of, the flaps 7 feet 13 are retained upon the end flaps which rest upon the bottom 2 and prevent said end flaps from sagging. The edges of the flaps 7 are cut away as at 14 to form means for engagement of the edge of the flap with the finger to facilitate unfolding or collapsing the box. The lid or closure 6 is provided with end and

6 and 6" respectively which are held in folded position by a tongue and slot fastening similar to the fastening 1l12, 15 indicating the tongues and 16 the slots, the former being formed on stub flaps 17 on the ends of the flaps 6".

The form of box shown in Figs. 5 to 7 inclusive is similar to the box above described with the exception that the inturned or

auxiliary flaps

3 and 7 are further equipped with partition flaps for dividing the box into a plurality of compartments. These may be formed by cutting said parti ti'on flaps from the auxiliary flaps or by adding the partition flaps tothe auxiliary flaps, or by both methods. In the drawings I have illustrated the employment of both methods. As shown therein the auxilliary end flaps 7 are cut as at 18 on lines parallel and adjacent to the upper edges or fold 7 forming flaps 18 which are bent inwardly as shown in Figs. 5 and 7 and the auxiliary front flap 3 is similarly cut as at 19 forming a partition flap 19' which is bent inwardly as shown. Extending from the opposite edge of the flap 7 from the flap 18 is a flap 20 adapted to rest against the back 4 and provided at its end with a partition flap 21 which is bent inwardly with its end in proximity to the end of the flap 18'. The opposite member 7 may be provided with a flap 22 adapted to rest against the back 40f the box with its end arranged behind the flap 20 to hold the same in position. It is obvious that by this construction or by adopting either or both of the methods above described,-the box may be variously divided into compartments as desired or found necessary for the particular use to which the box is to be put.

I- claim: 1

1. A collapsible paper box formed of a single blank folded to form a bottom, front and back, end flaps on the ends of the front and back portions, means for securing said end flaps together, auxiliary end flaps inclosing the first said end flaps and partition flaps formed on said auxiliary end flaps, substantially as described.

2. A collapsible paper box formed of a single blank and comprising a bottom, front, sides and end flaps on the ends of said front and back respectively, interlocking means on said end flaps, auxiliary end flaps inclosing the first said end flaps, an auxiliary front flap folded inwardly and engaging the first said auxiliary flaps, and partition flaps formed on said auxiliary end and front flaps, substantially as described.

3. A collapsible paper box formed of a single blank and comprising a bottom, front,

back and interlocking end flaps, auxiliary end flaps extending from the ends of thebottom and adapted to inclose the first said end flaps and reinforcing flaps on the edges of said auxiliary end flaps, substantially as described.

4. A collapsible paper box formed of a single blank comprising a bottom, front, back and interlocking end flaps, said end flaps extending from the ends of the front and back portions, auxiliary end flaps extending from the ends of the bottom and between said first mentioned end flaps and adapted to incl-ose the same and reinforcing flaps on the edges of said auxiliary end flaps, said reinforcing flaps being cut from the adjacent edges of the first mentioned end flaps, substantially as described.

5. A collapsible paper box formed of a singleblank and comprising a bottom, front, back and interlocking end flaps, auxiliary end flaps extending from the ends of the bottom and adapted to inclose the first said end flaps and reinforcing flaps on the edges of said auxiliary end flaps, said reinforcing flaps being cut from the lower portion of the first mentioned end flaps, said flaps being of less length than the width of said end flaps, providing feet on the lower edge of the latter to engage the bottom of the box, substantially as described.

6. A blank for forming a collapsible paper box, cut and scored to form a bottom,

front, back, top and auxiliary front flap in alinement with each other, auxiliary end flaps extending laterally from the ends of the bottom portion, end flaps extending laterally from the sides of the front and back portion, corner reinforcing flaps on the edges of said end auxiliary flaps and out from a portion of the adjacent edges of the end flaps, said corner reinforcing flaps being of less length than the width of said end flaps, providing feet on the lower edge of the latter to engage the bottom of the box, substantially as described.

7. A collapsible paper box formed of a single blank and comprising a bottom, front, back, top and auxiliary front flap, interlocking end flaps, extending from the ends of the front and back respectively, auxiliary end flaps extending from the ends of the bottom and adapted to inclo'r, the first said end flaps, reinforcing flaps on the edges of said auxiliary end flaps, said reinforclng flaps being cut from the lower portion of the first mentioned end flaps, said flaps being of less length than the width of said end flaps, providing feet on the lower edge of the latter to engage the bottom. of the box,

said auxiliary front flap folding inwardly and engaging said auxiliary end flaps, substantially as described.
