3 Claims. (Cl. 229-16) This invention lrelates to cardboard packing cases, and particularly to a cardboard packing case which has interlocked sides and ends.
It is usually the practice when making cases from cardboard and the like to die-cut the sheets to form the bottom, sides, ends and top walls which are folded up on scored lines and secured in case relationship by stitching, glue, glued strips or the like.
The present invention has for its main object the construction of a case from a die-cut sheet which has the sides and ends secured in assembled relationship by tabs which interlock with the end walls.
It is a further object of the invention to die-cut a Sheet in such manner as to form the bottom, top, end and side walls, as well as tabs and slots which interengage with each other when in assembled relation for securing the walls in interlocked relationship.
Other objects and features of novelty of the invention will either be specically pointed out or will become apparent when referring, for a better understanding of the invention, to the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of a case constructed in accordance with the present invention, with the cover closed;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the case illustrated in Fig. l, with the cover open;
Fig. 3 is a broken sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig. l, taken on the line 3-3 thereof;
Fig. 4 is a sheet of cardboard or other material after being die-cut and scored ready to be folded into a case;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the die-cut sheet, with parts thereof in folded relation, and
Fig, 6 is a broken view of structure, similar to that illustrated in Fig. 3, showing a further form of the invention.
Referring to the gures, particularly to Fig. 4, a sheet 1), which may be a solid or corrugated board, is shown after it is die cut to form a front wall 11, a bottom 12, a rear wall 13 having a cover 14 in extension thereof, with the front wall 11 having a flap 15 along its top edge. The front wall 11 has end walls 16 and 17 along the junction of which scored lines 13 are provided. Flap sections 19 are disposed in extension of the end walls 16 and 17 having scored lines 21 therebetween. The rear wall 13 has locking wing sections 22 at each end, with the junction therebetween being scored at 23. Wing sections 24 are disposed in extension of the locking sections 22 having scored lines 25 at the junction thereof. It will be noted that a scored line 26 is provided between the flap and front wall 11 and that a scored line 27 is provided between the front wall 11 and the bottom wall 12. A scored line 28 is provided between the rear wall and the bottom and a scored line 29 is provided between the rear wall 13 and cover 14.
A pair of locking tabs 31 is disposed in extension of the cover 14, the scored lines 32 being provided at the junction between the tabs and the cover. The tabs are ice aligned with slots 33 at the junction of the ap 15 with the front wall 11. Hand holes 34 are completely cut from the end Walls 16 and 17 while hand holes 35 are cut on three sides in the locking end walls 22, having the fourth side 36 scored for a purpose which will be explained hereinafter. The side edges of the wing sections 24 have notches 37 therein which mate with the slots 33 when the walls and ilaps are folded to form a case.
To form the case, the flaps 19 are bent upwardly along the scored line 21 and the end walls 16 and 17 are bent upwardly along the scored lines 18. Thereafter, the front end wall 11 is bent upwardly along the scored line 27, positioning the flaps 19 in aligned relation on top of the bottom wall 12. Thereafter, the locking end flaps 22 are bent upwardly along the scored line 23 and the rear wall 13 is bent upwardly along the scored line 28, moving the flaps 22 to a position on the outside of the end walls 16 and 17. It will be noted that the end walls 16 and 17 have angularly disposed slots 38 cut therethrough and that the locking end aps 22 have arcuately disposed locking projections 39 thereon which are guided through the slots 3S to be on the inside of the case when the walls 11 and 13 are disposed in parallel relation, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3. The arcuate edges of the locking projections 39 are struck from the score line 28, permitting the edges to move in the slots 38 without binding as the wall 13 is bent upwardly along the line 28. A further lock is provided by bending the flaps 41 of the hand holes 35 along the scored lines 36 through the hand holes 34 in the end walls 16 and 17 and upwardly on the inside of the case, as illustrated in Fig. 2. This securely locks the two end walls 16 and 17 and the end tlaps 22 in adjacent relation to each other, with the front and back walls 11 and 13 disposed in spaced parallel relation to each other.
The wing sections 24, as illustrated in Fig. 2, may be folded over to close the top of the case, after which the ap 15 is folded inwardly. The cover 14 is folded over the wing sections 24 and Hap 15, with the locking iingers 31 extending through the slots 15 and notches 37. When desired, the walls 11 and 13 may be provided with a plurality of openings 42 to provide ventilation for the contents of the case. With this arrangement, the case is positively secured together without the necessity of using stitching or adhesive material, permitting the diecut sheets, as illustrated in Fig. 4, to be shipped to the point of use where they may be readily assembled without the use of any tools, stitching or adhesive material.
As illustrated in Fig. 6, the wing sections 24, instead of covering the opening at the top of the case, may be bent downwardly into engagement with the inner surface of the end walls 16 and 17 to retain the locking extension 39 and the hand hold ap 41 against the inner face of the side walls 16 and 17. This arrangement adds substantial strength to the ends and side walls of the case and aids in retaining the engaged elements in locking relation.
What is claimed is:
l. A case made from a single sheet of die-cut material having front and rear walls with a bottom wall therebetween, end walls at each end of the front wall having a hand hole and a slot cut therethrough, locking end walls provided on the ends of the rear Wall having hand holes therethrough cut at three sides leaving a flap supported along one edge, and locking extensions provided on the locking end walls having arcuate edges struck from a line at which the rear wall joins with the bottom wall, said extensions projecting through the slots in the walls at the ends of the front wall to form a closed case, the flaps of the hand holes of said locking end walls extending through the hand holes of `the side walls for retaining the side Walls in locked reia'tion.

3.
