SHIPPING-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 25, 1914. Serial No; 827,199.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. BINOK- my, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jasper, in the county of Dubois and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Shipping-Case, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a collapsible box, and one object of the present invention is to provide a structure of this type which may be fashioned with a minimum waste of material, the construction being such that a blank may be folded readily into box form and, with equal facility, be restored again to a flat condition, thereby permitting of a repeated using of the structure and facilitating shipment thereof'in a knocked down form.
With the above and'other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 shows in plan, one form of blank from which the box herein disclosed may be fashioned; Fig. 2 is an end elevation showing the box partly opened, portions being broken away; Fig. 3 is a perspective of the completed box.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a blank which may be of the general outline shown in Fig. 1. This blank may be made of any desired flexible material. At one end of the blank there is an extension 4 and at the other end of the blank there is an extension 25. At one end, the blank is cut longitudinal, as indicated at 1 in aline ment with the edges of the extension 25. Intermediate its ends, the blank is cut transversely as indicated at 2. The blank is cut longitudinally at the inner ends of the transverse cuts 2, as shown at 8, and thus openings 2 are formed in the edges of the blank. The blank is creased alonglongitudinal lines 5, in alinement with the lateral edges of the extensions 4 and 25. The blank is creased transversely as shown at 6 in alinement with the inner ends of the cuts 1,
and is creased transversely as shownat 7 and 8 adjacent the ends of the cuts 8. The extension 4: is creased at its inner end as sholnn at 9, and intermediate its ends as at By the operation above described, there is produced a blank comprising a main side wall 11 provided at one extremity with an inner end wall 25, an auxiliary side wall 1 1 provided at one extremity with an outer wall 15, the end wall 15 having a tongue 16, and a third end wall 17 forming a connection between the other extremities of the main andauxiliary side walls, the main side wall 11 being provided with opposed outer edge-walls 18 equipped at their ends with approaching tabs 19-and 20, the auxiliary side wall 14 being provided with opposed inner edgewalls 21.
In the foregoing description the terms inner, outer and the like havebeen selected with a view to defining the relative positions of the parts and the terms side, end and the like have been selected merely to facilitate the description and not with a view to conveying the idea that the box must stand in any particular position.
Fig. 2 shows the box set up but in an open position, and in transforming the blank shown in Fig. 1 into the open box shown in Fig. 2, the outer edge walls 18 may be turned up so that they stand at right angles to the wall 11, the tabs 19 and 20 being turned in. The inner end wall 25 is then turned up so that it overlaps the tabs 19, as will be understood clearly from Fig. 2. The third end wall 17 is turned up at right angles to the wall 11 so that the wall 17 lies against the inturned tabs 20. The wall 14 and the wall 15 together with the tongue 16 are then turned up as shown in Fig. 2, and the edge walls 21 are swung inwardly, toward the median plane of the box. As thus far described, the box is completed, but is in an open condition, as shown in Fig. 2.
In order to close the box, the wall 14 is swung downwardly, the inner edge walls 21 passing inside of the outer edge walls 18. The part 15 overlaps the wall 25 and the tongue 16 overlaps the wall 11. The box is now in the condition shown in Fig. 3.
' Any suitable means may be provided for holding the tongue 16 in the position shown in Fig. 3. If desired, the tongue may carry a fastener 22 to which is secured one end of a cord 23, the cord 23 being passed around the box and the free end 24 being wrapped around the fastener. In order to open the box the parts 16, 15 and 14 may be swung from the closed positions shown in Fig. 3 into the open positions shown in Fig. 2. However, if desired, the parts 18 and 21 may be swung to open positions as will be understood readily. Thus, the box may be opened at the side or at one end.
The tabs 20, when swung together, extend thefull width of the part 17 and the tabs 19 when swung together, extend the full Width of the part 25. The tabs 19 and the tabs 20, respectively, at their inner or meeting ends are cut off square and cooperate as shown in Fig. 2.
If desired, the creases 5 may be separated more widely than shown in the drawings, under .which circumstances, the openings 2 decrease in extent, the extension 25 being shortened accordingly.
. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A collapsible box fashioned from a blank and comprising a main side wall provided at one extremity with an inner end wall, an
auxiliary side wall provided at one extremity with an outer end wall which is overlapped upon the inner end wall, the outer end wall having a tongue overlapped upon the main side wall, and a third end wall forming a connection between the other extremities of the main and auxiliary side walls, the main side wall being provided with opposed outer end walls equipped at their edges with approaching tabs, the tabs at the respective edges lying respectively within the inner end wall and within the third end wall, the auxiliary side wall being provided with opposed inner edge walls which lie within the outer edge walls, the tabs at the respective edges meeting to form full width reinforcements for the inner end wall and the third end wall, all portions of the tabs being parallel to the inner end wall and the third end wall, thereby to permit the inner edge walls to enter between the outer edge walls.
