Be it known that I, HARVEY NELSON CAR- PENTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes Made of Paper or other Suitable Materials, of which the following is'a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in boxes made of paper, pasteboard, enameled cardboard, sheet-lead, or other suitable material, the object being to so construct a box cut in the proper form, that the ends thereof may be easily and readily folded, and at the same time effectually prevent the escape or sifting of any contents thereof.
My invention consists of certain novel features in the construction of the flaps forming the top and bottom of said box. The top and bottom of the box are alike, and therefore the accompanying drawings show only the body of the box and the top thereof.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved box with the top thereof open, showing the various flaps and lines. Fig. 2 is a similar view with a small portion of flap 0 un covered and flap E drawn back to show the lock made by lips L and M. Fig. 3 is also a perspective view of the box closed, showing end F slipped through slit 0.
A represents the body of a box, of any suitable form and material, sealed along one side vertically, leaving the end open for filling or emptying, as desired.
B and G are flaps on opposite sides of the box, folding on lines T Y and T Y, respectively. Flaps B and O are extended, forming lips M and L, which fold on lines R S and R S, respectively. The other two flaps of the box, D and E, fold on lines T T and Y Y Flap D has an end or tongue, F, and is also cut to form curbs G and H, which fold on lines T R, T X, and X T R,as plainly shown in Fig. 2. Flap E is also so cut as to form rounded lips N and N, which fold on lines Z Z and Z respectively, and curbs K and K, which fold on lines Y Z", Y S, and Y Z, Y S, respectively. The flap E has also the horizontal slit 0.
The ends of the box may be folded according to my invent-ion by first folding inward (ModeL) about one-half of the top thereof, the lip M, U
folding on lines R S, then assuming an upright position at rightangles to the flap B. In thus closing the flap B the curbs G and K, folding on lines T R and F X and Y S and Y Z, respectively, are drawn in and lie or fold flat against a portion of the flaps D and E, respectively. The flap C is then folded on the lines T Y T X, Y" Z, T" R, Y S, said flap then covering the other portion of the top of the box not covered by the flap B, as stated, and likewise lying fiat on the contents of the box, having the lip L first slipped under the lip M, thus forming a tight and complete center crosswise look.
In folding flap Gcurbs H and K,folding on lines T R, T X, and Y S, Y Z are drawn in and likewise lie flat against the portion of the flaps D and E, as shown in Fig. The flap D is then folded inward on lines T T, T X, T X far enough to allow the tongue F, which is brought forward for that purpose, to be run upward through the slit 0 in tlap E, which is also folded inward on the lines Y Y, Y Z, Y Z As the tongue F slips through opening 0 the curved lips N and N, folding on lines Z Z, Z rerilpettively, gradually are slipped under the curbs G, along the line T X and curb 'H, along the line T" X, the flap D of course being under the flap E. These two flaps are then gradually tightened by drawing tongue F tighter through O,and thus causing lips N and N to embrace curbs or parts G and H, as indicated. The whole is then pressed together, thus completingadurable, tight, and ready cover for the box, which can be opened with ease. Paste or other adhesive substance may be applied to the upper inner end of tongue 1', (if necessary, also to the inner ends of lips N and N,) causing F to retain a more permanent position.
The lips N and N may be omitted, and I may not pass the tongueF through the flap E, but fold the flap E before the flap D, and by the use of paste, in the usual way, cause the tongue to retain its position.
My box is preferably used with a tinfoil or waxed or oiled paper or sheet-lead lining made in the shape and form of the box, and when thus lined the box is practically water-tight, excluding all dampness, and also preventing the escape of any of the inclosed material,aud is therefore of great value to shippers of seed, to druggists, and others engaged in mercantile pursuits.
Should I make the box out of sheet-lead, thin strong paper of any suitable material may be used as a lining therefor.

combination with each other and flaps D and E, the whole being arranged to close substantially as described and set forth.
2. In a box of any suitable form and material, the flap D,bent to fold on line '1 T, TX, T X, with end or tongue F, and flap E, bent to fold on line Y Y ,Y Z, Y Z with curved lips N and N, folding on lines Z Z,Z Zflwith slip or opening 0, in combination with curbs Kand K,and flaps D,and curbs G and H,and flaps B and O, substantially as and for the purpose described.
