' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL THOMPSON VOGLE, O'F DUBOIS, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 636,302, dated November '7, 1899. Application filed December 20,1898- Serial No. 699,798- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL THOMPSON VOGLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dubois, county of Olearfield, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in boxes, the object thereof being to provide an article of this class which cannot be opened thus changing its original appearance. By
the use of this box the practice of opening boxes, removing their original contents, and
replacing spurious substances is prevented, and manufacturers and the public are bene- The invention will be hereinafterfully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved box, showing the same closed and fastened. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation taken through the side fastenings; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the end of a closed box, illustrating a slight modification of construction.
In the practice of my invention I employ an ordinary box A and a lid A, the box being composed, preferably, of pasteboard or other similar fragile material. Extended from the lower edge of the box-lid and forming an integral part thereof is aplurality of flaps B, and registering with these said flaps and extended from the upper edge of the outer casing of the boxA is a suitable number of similar flaps B. The flaps B and B are respectively extended at right angles to the side walls of the box, and when the same is closed, as illustrated in the drawings, each pair of flaps is fastened to each other by any suitable means-for instance, by eyelets b or by it is advisable to employ a plate 17*. This said plate is adapted to carry the name or trademark .of the manufacturer using the box.
In the modification illustrated by Fig. 3 of the drawings a recess ais formed in the side of the box beneath the flap B. Thus when the flap B is secured to the flap B the connected pair of flaps may be folded within the said recess, thus afiordin g a perfectly smooth side surface to the box, for the purpose of utility in the matter of packing.
I do not confine myself to a specific number of flaps nor to the means of fastening the same together, as it is obvious that under the scope of my invention I am entitled to slight variations-for instance, the flaps may be pasted together instead of employing the metallic fastening.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- I 1. As a box, the combination of a body In ember having flaps formingintegrally therewith and extended at right angles therefrom, with a lid member separable from the body member and having a similar number of flaps formed integrally therewith and extended at right angles therefrom, the said flaps of the respective body and lid members being adapted for engagement with each other when the lid member is in normal closure connection with the body member, and fastening means for securing the flaps together, substantially as shown and described.
2. An improved safety-box, comprising a body member'having flexible flaps extending laterally from its top edge, a lid member separable from said body member and adapted to form a cover for the same and having similar flexible flaps extending laterally from its lower edge and means for securing said flaps together, the side of one of said members being provided with a recess into which the secured flaps are adapted to be folded and housed, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 16th day of December, 1898.
