To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN G. GAREIS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Boxes, Satchels, Valises, Trunks, &c., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification.

My invention consists of a novel folding box composed of the parts arranged and com bined as hereinafter set forth and claimed.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a folding box embodying my invention, the same being in operative position. Fig. 2 represents a perspective viewthereof in folded condition. Referring to the drawings, A designates the sides of the body ofa folding box, and B the ends, 0 the bottom, and D the lid thereof, said parts being formed of paper, cardboard, leather, or other suitable material. The bottom 0 has in the center thereof the crease E, and the ends. The lid is provided with a carrying-strap K, which is passed through openings L in the lid D, the walls of said openings being reinforced for strengthening purposes, said strap having its ends buckled together, as at M, for convenience of application and removal of the strap.

On a proper portion of the front side A of the box is the catch N for retaining the lid in closed position. On the inner faces of the sides A are catches P, which are adapted to enter the eyes Q on the stretchers for retaining the latter in open or operative position.

It will be seen that when the ends and bottom are straightened out and the stretchers placed parallel with the ends and fastened by the catches P Q the body of the box is held indistended condition, and the lid may be closed on said body over the flaps J and secured by the fastening N.

When the lid is opened and the fastenings P Q released, the .stretchersjmay be folded against the sides A and the flaps J turned downinto the body, after which the ends are folded inwardly and the bottom folded upwardly and the lid turned over the adjacent side, the parts being then in the flat condition shown in Fig. 2. The strap K may now be removed and passed around the folded box, so as to prevent opening of the same.

In order to strengthen the ends B and cause proper folding of the same, Iattach thereto the stiffening-pieces R,which have their lower ends diverge, as shown in Fig. 5, and the pieces are separated a short distance, while the pieces are creased, as at F G, so that they may be folded inwardly and the lower portion of the piece folded upwardly to permit the'bottom when folded to enter into the same. When the ends are folded, the pieces R lie side by side within the body of the box.

In Fig. 5 is shown an end piece B in primary condition, the lower end and sides of the same being adapted to be folded under the sides of the box, respectively.

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
