TRAVELING-BAG".
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented apinc, 1915.
Application led January 29, 1913. Serial o. 744,999.
T0 all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALFRED GRAY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at `New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Traveling-Bags, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to traveling bags and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a bag of this character having pockets arranged upon its outer ends which are adapted to contain small articles of necessity so that the owner may lock the bag and carry all traveling necessities, which would be likely to be used upon the train. in the outside pockets where they are readily accessible.
Further objects of this invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure l is a perspective view showing the form of the device and with the flap in lower position in full lines and in raised position, to expose the pocket, in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the opposite end of the bag and a modified form of pocket. F ig. 8 is a vertical section through one of the end walls, showing the manner of securing the flap thereto.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents an ordinary hand bag of the Gladstone or any other suitable type and which is provided with a rectangular lower portion 2 consisting of sides, ends and bottom and an upper portion 3 consisting of sloping or straight sides and ends connected as is usual yto the clasp frame 4. This clasp frame has the usual locks 5 and 6 and a carrying handle 7. Secured to one end of the rectangular lower portion is a pocket forming piece 8 having a pocket member 9 secured thereto and adapted to be engaged by the headed stud 10 on a closing and concealing flap 11. This flap is attached to the bag at its hinging point and is adapted to conceal the opening formed by the pocket forming member 8. The opposite end of the bag shows the pocket forming piece 12 connected to one side of a clasp framel, the other side 14 being secured directly to the bag. In this type the sides of the pocket forming piece are fulled as shown at 15 so as to provide a more commodious receptacle.
The lock of the latching frame 18 and 14 is concealed as is usual by a flap 16 provided with a headed stud 17 adapted to engage the pocket 18 secured to the pocket forming piece l2.
The flap 16, as shown, has its secured edge located upon the fixed latching frame 13 and below the point of connection between the rectangular portion 2 and the sloping side portions 3. Thisconstruction is advantageous in that the flap will always be maintained in a smooth condition and prevented from becoming wrinkled, should the sloping walls 3 collapse under the weight of the contents of the bag; also, when the latching frames 13 and 13 are locked and the flap folded thereover and the stud 17 engaged within the socket 18, the flap, owing to the peculiar manner in which it is secured to the end of the bag, and its inherent elasticity, will .have a tendency to fly upward, thereby causing the stud 17 to bind against one side of the wall of the opening in the socket and prevent the accidental withdrawal ofthe stud from thesocket.
What is claimed is In combination with a traveling bag having a rectangular body portion and hinged latchingframes, a pocket forming piece secured to one of the end walls of the body portion and co-extensive in width thereof, a fixed latching frame secured to the end wall of 'the traveling bag at a point below and adjacent the hinged point of the latching frames of the traveling bag, a second latching frame pivoted to the fixed latching frame and secured to the upper edge of the pocket forming piece, and adapted to coact with the fixed latching frame for closing the pocket, a flap secured to the end wall of the traveling bag and having-one end interposed between the fixed latching frame and the outer surface of the end wall, the free end of the Hap being adapted to fold over the latching frames of the pocket when the said latching frames are in locking position, and means on the pocket adapted to engage means on the free end of the iap for holding the flap in its folded position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
v ALFRED GRAY.
