specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 5, 11913.
Application filed November 22, 1911. Serial No. 661,898.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMANUEL Hornsing at Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented new which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to boxes, more paran object to provide a box made from a single piece of material and adapted to con tain wearing apparel and the like.
In a large number of boxes now generally used, in department stores and the like, for containing wearing apparel, the body of the box is fashioned from one piece of material, preferably cardboard and the cover for the body is fashioned from a second piece of material. In a box of this kind each of the corners must be provided with looking lugs for securing portions of the box body and cover body to provide sides for the box body and overlapping portions for the cover body, thus necessitating a large amount of material to properly construct the two parts of the box, namely the box body and the cover body. Furthermore, boxes of this nature are not substantially reinforced and the sides and ends of the box, as well as the bottom of the box body and the top of the cover body tend to bulge outwardly and tear, any bulging of this kind being also adapted to disengage the locking members at each of the corners of the box.
In my device I employ a box portion and a cover portion, both made of an integral piece of material, preferably cardboard, the mentioned box portion and cover being provided with fewer locking members than the usual box described heretofore. By provid ing the cover portion to swing on the-body cover por-. tions, my box'can be conveniently carried in the same manner that a suitcase or valise is carried, portions'of the strap being 'arranged to constitute grips and the-free end of the cover-port-ion being adapted to lock with the free end of the box portion.
Reference is to behad to theaccompanyingdrawings constituting a'partiof this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which-- 1 Figure 1 Isa perspective view of a box,
showing'the same in closed position. Fig. 2
is a horizontal sectional view, looking down v upon the bottom of the body portion of the box. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view,
showing the. coverin partial open position and disclosing the manner of reinforcing the box portion and cover portion at the 7 corners where the same are hingedly connected. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the box is folded. Referring to the views and more particularly to Fig. 5, I provide an integral piece of material 10, a portion 11 thereof consti-' tuting a box body and a portion 12 thereof constituting a cover body. The box body 11 is provided with ends13 and a side 14, the ends 13 being formed of weakened portions 15 and the side 14 being formed by a weakened portion 16. In a similar manner the cover body 12 is provided with ends 17 and a side 18, the ends 17 being formed by weakened port-ions 19 and the side 18 being formed by a weakened portion 20. The ends 13 of the box body 11 are provided with integral locking tongues 21 adapted to extend through slits 22 in the side 14 when the ends 13 have been bent laterally to the bottom 23 of the box body, the side 14 being also bent laterally so that the locking tongues 21 can be inserted in the slits 22. Likewise the ends 17 of the cover body 12 are provided with locking tongues 24: adapted to .extend' adapted to be bent laterally inward from' the ends Band 17 respectively and the inner'longitndinal extremity'of the box body isprovided with a weakened portion 29, the
inner extremity of the cover body being pro-,
vided' with a weakened portion 30, so that when the box body and .the cover body are bent on the weakened portions 29 and 30,
the reinforcing'fianges 27 of the box body 11 will overlap the reinforcing flanges 27 of the cover-body 12 as shown more particuin the slitsformed in the sides 14 and- 18 larly in Fig. 4, it being understood that the various locking members have been inserted of the box body 11 and the cover body, 12
.. respectively. Thus when the coverbody 12 through an opening 33 in the box body to is swung on the weakened portion 30 to engage the cover body with the box body 11, the laterally bent ends 17 and the laterally bent sidel8 of the cover body will overlap the laterally bent ends 13 and the laterally bent side 14 of the box body 11 as-shown in after which the strap passes inwardly through an opening 33 .in the box body. 11,
the said strap being then passed outwardly constitute a grip 34, the said strap being then passed inwardly through an opening- 35 in the box body and then passed outwardly through an opening 35 in the box body, the said strap bein then around the outer side of t e portion 31, after which the strap is passed inwardly through an-opening'35 in the cover body 12, after which the strap passes outwardly through an opening 35 in the cover body,
' in Fig. 1.
and terminates in a grip 36, the grips 34 and 36 being of equal length and arranged so that the person carrying the box. can conveniently secure both grips with one hand. It will be seen that the strap 32, at the points Where the same passes through the outer side of the portion 31, acts as a reinforcement for this part of the box and prevents the portion 31 from bulging when articles of apparel are placed within the box.
Formed on the side 14 of the box body 11 is alocking member 37, the said locking member being adapted to extend through a slit 38 formed in the side 18 of the cover body 12-, to lock the free end of the body'12 to the free end of the boxbody 11 as shown From the foregoing description, it will be seen that a box is provided in which the cover portion and the body portion are made of an integral piece of material, in "which fewerinterlocking joints are provided than in the boxes now generally used andwhich" consists of independent oove'r and body portions, in which the free endofthe cover portion is adapted for locking engagement cover portions an passed lwith the free end of the body portion and i constituting grip'slfor' enabling the user to 3 "easily carry the ,boxwith portions of the in whicha strap isprovided, the said strap said strap for the box.
I claim:-
1.A one piece collapsible box of substan; tially rectangular 'form including a body portion, a cover portion, an intermediate portion connectingrthe said body and the orming the rear wallof the box, coextensive side and front walls formed on said body and cover portions and adapted'to overlap when the box is in its closed position, and similarly constructed reinforcing" members formed on the inner constituting reinforcing means ends of the side walls of the cover and body portions, said members adapted tooverlap-- for engagement witht-he inner face connecting rear wall ofthe box. .2-.-A one-piece collapsible box of substantially rectangular form including a body portion, a cover portion, an intermediate portion connecting the said body and the of the cover-i ortion's and forming-the. rear wall ofthe' ox, coextensive side and front walls formed on said body -and cover" portions and adapted tooverlap when. the "box is in its closed position, and. similarly constructed "reinforcing members having beveled side edge'sformed on the inner ends of the side walls of the cover and body portions, said -members adapted-to overlap for-engagement with the inner face of, theconnectin'g rear wall of-thebox. v
1 3. Acne-piece collapsible box of substantially rectangular formincluding a body portion, a cover portion, an intermediate portion connecting the said body and the cover ortions and forming the rear wall of the box, coextensive side and front walls formed on said body and cover portions and adapted to overlap when the box is in its closed position, and similarly constructed reinforcing members formed on-t'heinner ends of the side walls of thecoverand-body portions, said members adapted to overlap forengagement with the inner face; ofth'e connecting rear wall of the box, said members being equal in length to approximately half the width of the rear wall. 1
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
