UNITED STATES ZAIDA B. WEBB, OF WI-IIPPANY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO WEBB FOLDING BOX COMPANY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF JERSEY.
FOLDING BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 692,564, dated February 4, 1902. I
Application filed July 12, 1901. Serial No- 67,960. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ZAIDA B. WEBB, of Whippany, Morris county, New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of folding boxes and paper boxes which have handles thereon; and the object of my invention is to produce a two-part handle attachment for an ordinary folding or similar box and to so construct and arrange the two parts of the handle that they may be very easily united toform a single handle and will When united be exceptionally strong.
To these ends my invention consists of certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similarcharacters of reference refer to similar parts throughout both of the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an open box provided with my improved handle attachments, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the closed box with the two parts of the handie fastened together.
v The box 10 may be of any approved kind, and I have not shown and shall not describe it in detail, but will simply refer to the end parts as being folded together and united by rivets 11. The box has also the ordinary folding top or cover 12, and this isadapted to be turned in between the two parts 13 of the handle before the said parts are united, after which they may be bent inward over the boxtop and fastened together, as presently described. These parts 13 of the handle are similar in structure, and, as illustrated, they project from the upper end edges of the box,
although it will be seen that the parts may project from any opposed edges of the box, and for this reason the structure of the box is not very material. Usually, however, the
When the two parts of the handle are to be united, the box-cover 12 is first turned in= ward and downward to position, and the parts 13 are then overlapped and brought to gether with a slight lateral movement, the tongue 15 of one being tucked in the slot let of the other. At the same time the keeper 16 of one is made to overlap the corresponding part of the other, and so the engagement of the keepers with the parts 13 and of the tongues with the slots of the said parts causes the two parts to be united so firmly that the handle will resist a very great strain. Ithas been found by tests and it will be readily seen that the keepers 16 serve to stiffen and brace the handle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a box, of a twopart handle, each part being attached to 0pposed edges of the box, and each part being longitudinally slotted and provided near its free end with a laterally-extending tongue and ata point between the tongue and slot with an independent laterally-extending keeper so that when the two parts of the handle are overlapped the tongue of one may enter the slot of the other and the keeper of one overlap and engage with the body portion of the other.
2. The combination with a box, of a twopart handle, each part being integral with opposed edges of the box, and each part being In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. 1 ZAIDA 1:. WEBB.
In presence of HENRY H. DAWSON, LAURA. E. HARDGROVE.
