This invention relates to dispensing holders, and more particularly to a holder for dispensing rolled sheet material, such as gummed tape and the like.
The invention comprehends a collapsible tubular or sleeve-like holder for dispensing sheet material from a roll having a hollow cylindrical core.
An object of the invention is the provision of an inexpensive holder of simple design and construction which can be formed from a one piece blank of foldable paperboard.
A more specific object of the invention is the provision, in a holder of the type described, of roll retaining means formed integrally with at least one wall of the holder from a pair of retaining tabs bent inwardly into overlapped interlocking relationship with each other.
These and other objects of the invention will be apparent from an examination of the following description and drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a dispensing holder embodying features of the invention;
FIGURE 2 is a side elevational view of the structure of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a transverse vertical section taken on line 3-3 of FIGURE 2;
FIGURE 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the dispensing holder of the other views may be formed; and
FIGURE 5 is a fragmentary end elevational view of a portion of the dispensing holder, illustrating one manner by which the roll retaining tabs may be positioned in interlocking relationship.
It will be understood that certain elements have been intentionally omitted from certain views, where they are illustrated to better advantage in other views.
Referring now to the drawings for a better understanding of the invention, it will be seen that the dispensing holder, indicated generally at is of a tubular or sleevelike construction. The holder is adapted to receive and rotatably retain a roll 12 of sheet material 14 which has been wrapped on a hollow cylindrical core 16 having a bore 18 extending longitudinally therethrough.
The tubular holder, best seen in FIGURE 1, can be formed from the unitary blank 20 of sheet material, such as foldable paperboard, illustrated in FIGURE 4 of the drawing.
The blank 20 includes alternately spaced pairs of side and end wall panels 22 and 24, respectively, which are hingedly interconnected along parallel fold lines 26 extending transversely of the blank. At one end of the blank a glue flap 28 is hingedly attached to the adjacent end wall panel 24 along a fold line 29 which is parallel to the other fold lines 26.
Formed integrally with each of the end wall panels 24, is an inwardly projecting roll retaining member 30, which is formed from a pair of retaining tabs 32 cut from the related end wall panel and bent inwardly into overlapped interlocking relationship with each other to form the projection or retaining member 30.
As best seen in FIGURE 4, each of the retaining tabs 32 is preferably pie-shaped having an arcuate cut 34 and a radial cut 36 defining two of the sides of the tab, with the third side being defined by a radially extending hinge 3,121,542 Patented Feb. 18, 1964 line 38. It will be noted that the hinge lines 38 of the tabs of each related pair are located generally in alignment with each other and spaced only a short distance from each other, so that, when the tabs are folded into the carton to form the retaining member 30, the tab end portions 40 will overlap each other to provide an interlocking relationship when the tabs are forced past each other. After the tabs have been forced past each other the natural resiliency of the paperboard will urge them toward each other so as to provide a fairly rigid construction Without the need of any outside securing means such as glue, staples or the like.
It Will be understood that the carton is completely collapsible and can be set up either by hand or on a machine. If it is desired to have a semi-automatic operation for the positioning of the retaining tabs 32 of each retaining member 30, this may be accomplished by means of the key device illustrated in FIGURE 5 of the drawings.
As best seen in FIGURE 5 the ends of the key extend through the openings 52 in the end panel from which the tabs Were cut. The key preferably comprises a pair of parallel arms 54 interconnected at one end by a cross piece 56 and having at the other end a pair of tab engaging fingers 58.
In order to position the retaining tabs with the key, it is inserted into the retaining t-ab openings 52 of the holder end panel with the respective fingers 58 of the key engaging the respective tabs 32. At this point the key is rotated and the fingers urge the tabs past each other into the overlapped interlocking relationship, as illustrated in FIGURE 1 of the drawings.
If it is desired to have a cutting blade on the carton adjacent one end thereof, this can be accomplished by the provision of a serrated blade 60, illustrated in FIGURE 1 of the drawings, which can be secured to an end edge of the carton in any desired manner, such as by means of staples 62.
We claim:
A collapsible holder, for dispensing sheet material from a roll having a hollow cylindrical core, formed from a unitary blank of foldable paperboard comprising:
(a) at least four side wall panels hingedly interconnected to define a tubular structure for retaining a roll of sheet material;
(b) one of said side walls having cut therefrom a pair of centrally disposed, spaced tabs hinged thereto along substantially longitudinally alined hinge lines which form a common hinge axis;
(0) said tabs being disposed on opposite sides of said common hinge axis and having end portions extending toward each other beyond the midpoint between the tabs;
(d) the end portions of the respective tabs being arranged and disposed to be folded inwardly into the holder and past each other into overlapped interlocking engagement with each other to form a projection extendible into the roll core and operable to rotatably retain the roll within the holder.
