This invention relates to a cabinet for dispensing sheet material such as waxed paper or paper toweling from a supply roll.
Objectives, improvements and advantages of the invention will be evident from the following description and the drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the dispensing cabinet;
Figure 2 is front view, partly in section, taken along the line 2 2 of Figure 3;
Figure 3 is a side elevation, partly in section, taken along the line 3 3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the cabinet with the cover open showing the supply roll;
Figure 5 is a front elevation, partly in section, of the supply roll with a bearing sleeve secured in the end of the core for the rolled sheet material; and
Figure 6 is a section taken along the line 6 6 of Figure 2.
The dispensing cabinet I3 comprises a base II to which is hinged as at I2 a cover I3. A passageway I4 between the cover and the base allows the sheet material to be Withdrawn when the cover is in closed position as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3.
The cover I3 includes two side Walls I5 and I6. On one side wall I5 there is secured, as by welding, a flanged member I7. As will hereafter appear flanged member I'i constitutes onehalf of a bearing in which the supply roll is journalled.
The base II includes side walls I 8 and I9. The side wall I8 has formed therein a boss 29. The side Wall I9 has an inwardly offset portion I9 which is shaped so that a portion thereof constitutes a bearing 2l. Secured to wall I9 and anchored thereto by lugs 22 and 23 is a flexible flat strip 24 of spring steel. Strip 24 is positioned so that a portion thereof 25 passes through opposed slots 2l' in bearing 2| and subteunds a chord along the base thereof.
As illustrated in Figure 5, the supply roll cornprises sheet material 26, which may be waxed paper, wound on a hollow core 2l. The core may be of paper board. In one end and to the interior of the core a short sleeve 28, preferably of metal, is secured by projections 29, The sleeve 28 possesses a circular ange 39 projecting beyond the end of the core. The other end of the core is designated as 3|.
The supply roll of continuous sheet material is placed in the dispensing cabinet I0 by disposing the end of the hollow core 3l over the boss 2U. As shown in Figure 4, the end of the core with the circular 4flange 30 is disposed in the bearing 2|. over the base II.

locking members 32 and 33 which may be of spring steel. The base II is notched at 34 and 35 to receive the locking members 32 and 33. Simply swinging cover I3 onto base II will result in the cabinet being locked. As particularly shown in Figure 3, a projection 36 on the locking member 32 will hook onto a portion of the base adjacent the notch 34. A projection 3'! on locking member 33 serves the same purpose with respect to the notch 35. To open the cabinet it is only necessary to push the exposed portions 38 and 39 of the locking members 32 and 33 each in the direction outwardly toward the ends of the cabinet and lift the cover. This is indicated by the arrow in Figure 6 with respect to one locking member.
When the cover is brought down onto the base and locked thereto as above described, the circular flange 30 on the end of the supply roll is journalled in split bearings I1 and 2| Because of the dimensions of split bearings I'I and 2| with respect to the circumference of ange 3-0, the flexible spring steel strip 24 is deformed or concavely depressed from its normal flat condition The section 25 of strip 24, as shown in Figure 3, will conform substantially with a segment of the circumference of the flange 30 and exert resilient or yielding pressure upon said iiange. The section 25 becomes in effect a resilient portion of the bearing journalling the flange 30. Thus when sheet material 23 is un-` wound from the supply roll a uniform resilient pressure is put on the supply roll. The strip 24 acts as a spring brake and will not allow the supply -roll to unwind too freely. The uniform selective pressure on the cylinder ange 3B will not permit binding in the bearings with the consequent undesirable results. Also, the spring brake action will prevent the supply roll from rolling back so that the free leading edge of the sheet material is not drawn up inside the cabinet where it cannot be grasped.
The cover I3 may have a serrated cutting edge 4I) to facilitate clean tearing of the sheet after the desired length is pulled olf. The dispenser may be placed on a horizontal surface whereupon it rests on non-skidding supports 4I of a rubber-like material. If desired the cabinet may be hung on a wall by means of openings 42 in the base section of the cabinet.
The structure described constitutes the preferred embodiment of the invention. Though not required, the bearing-construction shown particularly in Figure 3 may be duplicated on the other side of the dispensing cabinet in lieu of the boss 20. If so modified the sleeve 28 will also be duplicated in the end of core 3|.
If desired the core may be formed with a flanged portion such as 30 as an integral part of the core itself.
While the best results are obtained with the spring steel strip 24 disposed in the split bearing on the base of the dispenser, it is within the scope of the invention to place this spring brake in the split bearing attached to the cover. In fact each split bearing may have the resilient member disposed therein.
While the flanged bearing members on the cover and base are preferably designed to substantially completely enclose the core flange about its circumference, it is within the scope ofthe invention to fabricate the bearing members so that each prescribes less than a 180 degree arc. Each bearing surface may constitute a smaller arc or a plurality of small arcs and adequately journal the supply roll.
The present invention may be embodied in other specific forms Without departing from the essential attributes thereof. It is desired that the present specific -embodiments be considered in all respects illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
We claim: j
1. A cabinet for dispensing sheet material from a ilanged core comprising a base, a cover for said base, a bearing member provided on said base, a bearing member provided on said cover, and a resilient strip disposed in one of said bearing members and subtending a chord thereof to resiliently journal the flange of said core.

A cabinet for dispensing sheet material from a flanged core comprising a base, a cover for said base, a split bearing secured to said base, and a resilient strip `subtending a chord of said split bearing, a split bearing secured to said cover, said split bearings and resilient strip coacting to resiliently journal the flange of said core.
3. A cabinet for dispensing sheet material from a flanged core comprising a base, a cover for said base, a split bearing secured to said cover, a split bearing secured to said base, `opposed slots in one of said split bearings, and a flat strip of spring steel extending through saidslots to resiliently journal the flange of said core.
4. A cabinet for dispensing sheet-material comprising a hollow core, -a flangedsleeve secured to one end `of said core, a base having opposed side walls, a split bearing disposed in one side wall, a resilient 4strip subtending -a -chord -of -said splitl bearing, a cover hinged vto said base, a split bearing secured to 'said `cover and the flange of said sleeved core being .resiliently jour-naled .in said split bearing.
5. vA cabinet for dispensing sheet material-comprising a hollow core, a `iianged sleeve secured to one end of said core, a base having nopposed side walls, a split bearing disposed in lone side wall, opposed slots in the lower `portion of said split bearing, ,a flat resilient strip of spring steel extending through said .slots and 'xedly mounted to said end wa1l,.a cover hinged to said base, -and a split bearing seci-ired to said vcover 4and the flange of said sleeved core being resiliently jour-` to said base, a split bearing secured to said base, a split bearing secured to said cover, a resilient member disposed in one of said split bearings to resiliently journal the flange of said core, a locking member on said cover rand a cooperating notch on said base for locking base and cover together.
7. A cabinet for dispensing sheet material comprising a hollow core, a flanged sleeve secured to one end of said core, a base having opposed side walls, a bearing member disposed in one side wall, opposed slots in said bearing member, a flat Aspring steel strip extending through said slots and xedly anchored to said end wall, a boss formed in the opposed side wall, a cover hinged to said base, a bearing member secured to said cover, a locking member fixed to said cover, and a notch disposed in said base whereby the flange of 'said sleeved core is resiliently journaled in said bearing members when the locking member and notch cooperate to lock the cover to the base.
8. In combination with a cylindrical member, split bearings adapted to journal said cylindrical member and a normally flat resilient strip disposed within one of said split bearings and subtending a chord thereof whereby resilient pressure is exerted upon said cylindrical member when said strip is deformed in substantial conformance with a segment of said cylindrical member.
9. In combination with a cylindrical member, an upper split bearing, a lower split bearing, and a flat strip of resilient spring steel disposed in said lower split bearing, .said strip subtending a chord across the lower portion of said split bearing to constitute a resilient bearing surface for said cylindrical member.
10. In combination with a cylindrical member, split bearings adapted to journal said cylindrical member, one of said split bearings having opposed slots therein in the lower portion of said bearing, and a flat strip of spring steel extending through said slots and having the ends thereof anchored whereby resilient pressure is exerted upon said cylindrical member when said strip is deformed in substantial conformance with a segment of said cylindrical member.
11. A cabinet for dispensing sheet material wound on a core having a flange at one end thereof comprising a base, a cover cooperable with said base, a split bearing Vprovided on said base, a split bearing provided on said cover, said split bearings providing a bearing surface for said flange and a resilient strip disposed in one of said split bearings and subtending a chord thereof, said resilient strip applying yielding pressure to said flange when said strip is deformed in conformity with the surface of said flange to resiliently journal said flange.
