CENTERING DEVICE FOR ROLLS OF PAPER IN AUTOGRAPHIC REGISTERS, &c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,998, dated May 30, 1905.

Be it known that I, ENGLAND J. BARKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Morgan Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centering Devices for Rolls of Paper in Autographic Registers, &c., of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description. r
The object of my invention is to provide simple, cheap, and effective means for centering rolls of paper in autographic registers and other machines of a similar character, so that said rolls can be easily inserted in place when the machine is open and will be non-removably retained in position when the machine is closed. This I accomplish by the means hereinafter fully described and as particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of an autographic register having my improvements applied thereto. section through one side of the machine, taken on dotted line 2 2, Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of a portion of the machine, taken on dotted line 3 3, Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
In the drawings, A represents the baseplate of the autographic register, to which my improvements are applied, B the stationary section of the casing of the machine, and C the movable section, hinged to the stationary section at one end. The exact design of these two sections or of the upper structure of the machine and the parts cooperating therewith is immaterial; but it is desirable to have the vertical sides of the casing, particularly where the rolls of paper are journalecl, parallel and to have the lower edges of the hinged section rest upon or oppose the upper edges of the stationary section. In the autographic register shown in the drawings the design of the casing is shown to be such that at about its center of length the forward portion of the sides of the stationary section are very materially reduced in height and the sides of the hinged section are increased in height to compensate for such reduction, thus requiring the Fig. 2 is a transverse central portion of the opposing edges of these sections to be vertically disposed. The rear end of the hinged section terminates at a point about one-third the length of the machine from its rear end, and the remainder of the upper edges of the stationary section, between the rear end of the hinged section and the rear end of the machine, is covered by a hinged frame .K, that covers over the rear of the case and frames the portion of the strip of recordpaper lying over the platen or bed of the machine upon which the operator writes. The downwardly-flanged side edges of this frame K rest upon the upper edges of the stationary section coming below it, and hereinafter what is said with relation to the operation of the hinged section so far as it affects that portion of my invention inclosed in and connected with said stationary section applies equally to said frame K. The stationary section of the particular autographic register shown has two rolls of paper j ournaled therein,and the hinged section thereof has one roll journaled in it. These rolls of paper a are wound upon a hollow pasteboard core X and are centered on one side of the machine by means of a circular embossment at, either made integral with or secured to and projecting. from the inner vertical surface of the side frame. In practice an end of the paper-roll is slipped over this embossment and the other end is centered by my improvement, which consists principally of arms D, which in the stationary section of the casing are arranged in a vertical position in the channels in the inner surface of the boxes 7) 7), whose outer surfaces stand out like pilasters from the side of the casing, as shown. These arms are pivoted near their lower end to the lugs c c, projecting inward from the outer vertical walls of said channels, and their inward movement is limited by extending their lower ends (Z below their pivots and bending them outward, so that when said arms D are in a vertical plane parallel to and slightly in advance of the inner surface of the adjacent side of the casing the lower extremity of said extension will bear against the said outer wall of the channel in said boxes.
The arms are normally kept at the limit of I00 their inward movement in this vertical position by horizontally-disposed transverse coil expansion-springs E, placed between the upper ends of the same and the outer walls of said channels and retained in this position by having their inner ends centered on the teat e, projecting outward from near the upper ends of said arms, and their outer ends in suitable pockets f, made in the outer vertical wall of the box. In order to insure against these arms involuntarily moving outward when the machine is in operation or otherwise subjected to a jar, I extend their upper ends it above the plane of the upper edges of the stationary section of the casing, so that when the hinged section closes down over said stationary section the sides of the former will lap down past said upper ends it and absolutely prevent said arms moving outward.
Secured to or made in one piece with arms D, directly opposite and in alinement with the embossment a, are inwardly-projecting circular centering-bosses g, the extent of whose projection and whose diameters are such that when the said hinged section of the casing is raised and arm D pulled outward and the roll of paper inserted between said embossment a and boss 9 and one end of said core centered on the former said boss will upon the arm being released enter the adjacent hollow end of the core of said roll and center it and subject it to such a degree of lateral pressure as to prevent the too free unwinding of the paper from the same.
In view of the limited room and the difficulty of operating the same the arm F for holding and centering the roll of paper in the hinged section of the casing is not placed in a vertical position and reversed, as it would necessarily have to be if arranged vertically, but is placed horizontal and so that the end thereof opposite its pivot can extend past the vertically-disposed edge of the central portion of the stationary section of the casing. The construction and operation of arm F and elements cooperating therewith are the same as arms D and their cooperating elements. The only difference is in the horizontal arrangement of the same.
What I claim as new is 1. The combination with asuitable case having opposite vertical side walls, one of which is provided with a stationary centering-embossment, and means covering said side walls provided with a platen of an arm pivoted near one end to the inner surface of the opposite wall and having a centering-boss thereon in alinement with said centering-embossment.
2. The combination with asuitable case having opposite vertical side walls one of which is provided with a stationary centering-embossment, and means covering said side walls provided with a platen of a spring-controlled arm pivoted near one end to the inner surface of the opposite wall which is normally at the limit of its movement toward said embossment and has a centering-boss in alinement with the same. p
3. The combination with a suitable case having opposite vertical side walls, one of which is provided with a stationary centering-embossment, and means covering said side Walls provided with a platen of an arm which is pivoted near one end to the inner surface of the opposite wall, has a centering-boss thereon in alinement with the said centering-embossment and has its pivoted end extended beyond its pivot.
4. The combination with a suitable case having opposite vertical side walls, one of which is provided with a stationary centering-embossment, and means covering said side walls provided with a platen of an arm which is pivoted near one end to the inner surface of the opposite wall, has a centering-boss thereon in alinement with the said centering-embossment and has its pivoted end extended beyond its pivot, and a spring interposed between the end of said arm opposite its pivoted end and said casing.
5. The combination with a suitable case having opposite vertical side walls one of which is provided with a stationary centering-embossment for the roll of record-paper and the other of which is provided with an elongated depression or box in its inner surface arranged transaxially to the centering devices for the opposite end of said roll, of an arm pivoted near one end in said box having a centeringboss thereon in alinement with said opposite embossment.
6. The combination with a suitable case hav- Y ing opposite vertical side walls, one of which is provided with a stationary centering-embossment for the roll of record-paper and the other of which is provided with an elongated depression or box in its inner surface arranged 'transaxially to the centering devices for the opposite'end of said roll, of an arm pivoted near one end in said box having a centeringboss thereon in alinement with said opposite embossment, and having its pivoted end extend beyond its point.
7. The combination with a suitable case having opposite vertical side walls, one of which is provided with a stationary centering-embossment for the roll of record-paper and the other of which is provided with an elongated depression or box in its inner surface arranged transaxially to the centering devices for the opposite end of said roll, of an arm pivoted near one end in said box having a centering-boss thereon in alinement with said opposite embossment, and a spring interposed between the end thereof opposite said pivot and the walls of said box.
8. The combination with asuitable case having opposite vertical side walls, one of which is provided with a stationary centering-embossment for the roll of record-paper and the other of which is provided with an elongated depression or box in its inner surface arranged transaxially to the centering devices for the opposite end of said roll, of an arm pivoted near one end in said box having a centeringboss thereon in alinement with said opposite embossment, and having its pivoted end extend beyond its pivot, and a spring interposed between the end thereof opposite the pivot of said arm and said box.
9. The combination with asuitable case having opposite side walls, and comprising a stationary section and a hinged section the lower edges of which oppose the upper edges of the stationary section, and a stationary centeringembossment secured to one of the side walls of said sections, of an arm pivoted near one end to the opposite wall of the same section and having a centering-boss in alinement with the said stationary embossment on the opposite side of the machine, and having its end opposite its pivot extend beyond the opposing edges of said sections when the machine is closed.
10. The combination with a suitable case having opposite side walls and comprising a stationary section and a hinged section the lower edges of which oppose the upper edges of the stationary section, a stationary centering-embossment secured to one of the sides of one of said sections, and a box or elongated depression in the side thereof opposite said embossment, of an arm having a centeringboss and pivoted near one end in said box, and having its opposite end extend beyond the opposing edges of said sections of the machine when closed.
11. The combination with a suitable case having opposite side walls and comprising a stationary section and a hinged section the lower edges of which oppose the upper edges of said sections of the machine when closed.
12. The combination with a suitable case having opposite side walls and comprising a stationary section and a hinged section the lower edges of which oppose the upper edges of the stationary section, a stationary centering-embossment secured to one of the sides of one of said sections, and a box or elongated depression in the side thereof opposite said embossment, of an arm having a centeringboss and pivoted near one end in said box beyond which pivot its end extends, and having its opposite end extend beyond the opposing edges of said sections of the machine when closed, and a spring inserted between the end of said arm opposite its pivot and said box.
13. The combination with a suitable case having opposite vertical side walls, one of which is provided with a stationary centeringembossment, of an arm,pivoted near one end to the inner surface of the opposite wall and having a centering-boss thereon in alinement with said centering-embossment, and means for covering said case provided with a writing-surface and adapted to lock said arm when closed.
