TRAVELING-CASE FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES, (lALCULA'J.I1\TG-1\!II.A.('JHINES, AND
THE LIKE.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 20, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR BERNHARDT GURIOKE, a citizen of the Empire of Germany, residing at Glashiitte, in the Kingdom of Saxony and German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Traveling-Cases for Type-Writing Machines, Calculating-Machines, and the Like, whereof the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a compact traveling case adapted in closed position for carrying the machine by hand and in open position to serve as a rest for the machine in use.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings represents a longitudinal vertical sect-ion of a traveling case embodying one form of this invention adapted'for a typewriter machine. Fig. 2 represents a front elevation 1 thereof in closed position. Fig. 3 represents a plan view in open position of the traveling case-shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The same reference numbers indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
The traveling case is particularly adapted to contain a typewriter. In this 'form 'of embodiment the bottom plate 33 is provided with the upright flange or backboard 38. This bottom plate is provided with recesses 35. In this embodiment the end plates are also: divided into stationary and folding parts. These stationary parts 40 which close the ends of the spring roller compartment and which have journal bearingsfor supporting the spring roller 39 ter minate immediately-in front of said spring roller and the folding parts 34 of said end plates are hinged directly to the bottom plate 33 by hinges 10". The outer corners of the lower edges of these hinged parts are rounded ofi' to fit. the recesses as indicated in Fig. 2 when in open position. These hinged parts are provided on their inner faces adjacent to their upper edges with curved guideways 36.
A roll top 37 is connected at its inner end with the spring roller 39 and provided atits outer end with a transverse bar 49 which slides in the grooves 36 together with the ends of the roll top 37. When the hinged end parts 34 are swung open they formwith the base plate 33' a wide plate and consti tute desk-like spaces at opposite sides of the typewriter for holding manuscript, paper and other implements of work. The spring roller is disposed above the base plate in a compartment at the rear thereof. The relation of said compartment and the spring roller to the base plate is such as to constitute a compact traveling case. This spring roller tends continuously to wind up the roll top.
In order to hold the sides firmly in up-' right position, on each side is arranged a spring pressed pawl 41, which is adapted to be moved about a pin 42 at right an les to the sides. The spring pressed pawl %1&S a handle 43 projecting at an angle from the side and which is adapted to move on a guiding pin 44. A spring 45 is wound around the guiding pin 44'; acting continuously thereon, so that the handle 43 is pressed away from the side. further provided with a horizontal arm 46 provided with a cut-away portion. With The pawl is this cut-away portion the arm engages, 1n I the operative position of the springgpressed pawl, with a lug 47 which is secured to the upper transverse bar 48 of the rear portion 38. The lug 47 is provided with an inclined portion in such manner that the spring pressed pawl on the sides being folded up engages with the lug, while for the purpose of depression of the sides a backward movement of the handle 43 is suflicient.
At the forward end of the roll top 37 is provided a bar 49, the lateral ends of which,
on bringing the sides into upright position,
engage again in the guiding groove 36. The bar 49 is preferably provided with an inclined face-50 in order on the roll top being wound up, to eflect a braking action on the roll top, by cooperation with an inclined face 51, arranged on the rear wall of the casing. In th1s construction the winding roller for the roll top is supported above the portable base plate in the fixed parts of the end plates whereby a compact traveling case is secured. Y
I claim as my invention:
A calculator or typewriter traveling case comprising a portable base plate adapted to receive the machine, divided end plates composed of fixed parts having journal bearings and hinged parts having grooved ways, means forhold'ing'said hinged parts in upright position, a spring roller supported above said base plate in" bearings of the as my invention, I have signed my name in fixleled parts of the dend plztttes, and atililexiblg presence of two subscribing witnesses.
