PATENT OFFICE.
OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 30, 1906.
Application led February 19, 1906. Serial No. 301.873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE O. CHRIS- MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Copy-Holders for Type-Writers, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to a folding copyl holder for type-writers; and the object of my ,which may be readily positioned at any angle on either side of the type-writer and operator.
vTo the above pur oses my inventlon consists of certain nove features of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, ointed out in my claims, and illustrated in t e accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved copy-holder, the same being folded andv positioned within the hollow base. Fig. 2 1s a front elevation of the parts seen in Fig. 1 and a portion of a type-writer in position upon the hollow base. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the copy-holder unfolded and swung to one side of the base. Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse section taken on the line 5 5of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail section taken on the line 6 6 of Fig. 3. Fig. 47 is a detail elevation showing the connection of a spring with the copy-holding late. p In the construction of my improved copyholder the housing or hollow basecomprises a bottom plate 1 and a top plate 2, which plates are approximately rectangular and of lthe same size, and positioned between the side edges of said lates are strips 3, which do not extend all t e way to the front edges of said plates.
Located between the rear edges of the plates is a strip 4, and thus a flat hollow base 1s formed on which the type-writer is positioned.
y Formed in the top plate 1 and extending from the front to the rear of the center thereof is a slot 5, and extending parallel with the front edge of the top plate 1s a slot 6, with which the slot 5 communicates.
7 designates an arm that is arranged to slide in the space between the lates 1 and 2, and seated in the top side of t e rear end of this arm is a pin 8, which extends u wardly through the slot 5 and is provide with a head just above the top surface of the plate 2.
The forward end of the arm 7 is provided with a segmental plate 9, there being a shoulder 10 formed on top of this plate adjacent its ed e, and in said shoulder 1s formed a series o notches 11.
The outer end of the plate 9vis provided with a perforated ear 12, by means of which said plate is manually engaged when the plate and arm 7 are withdrawn from the base of the holder.
A portion 13 at the forward end of the arm 7y extends over the plate 9, and pivotally held between said plates 13 and 9 is a plate 14, to which is hinged a large rectangular plate 1 5, which forms the copy-holding plate of my improved device. Rigidly fixed to the rear side of this plate 15 and extending downwardly therefrom is a leaf-spring 16, the lower end of which is adapted to engage in any one of the notches 11.
A single length of wire 17 is bent into rectangular form and its ends secured together in any suitable manner, and springs 18 are formed in the sides of the rectangularly-bent4 wire, which springs are engaged by staples I9, secured to the front face of the plate 15 adjacent its sides. The tendency of these springs 18 is to press the ends of the rectan ularlybent wire 17 onto the ends of the p ate 15, and thus retain in position on said plate 15 a book or sheet containing notes or matter that is being transcribed by the stenographer psing the machine located on the hollow ase.
When the device is folded and out of use, the copy-holding plate 15 is swung upon its hinge, so that it lies face downwardly upon the arm 7, as seen by dotted linesin Fig. 3, and said plate and arm are now moved inwardly between the plates 1 and 2, and in so doing the pin 8 moves to the rear end of the slot 5. Thus said parts are in an out-of-theway position while not in use.
To bring the copy-holder into use, the op- IOO IOS
IOv
erator engages the perforated ear 12 and pulls forwardly to bring the arm 7 and parts carried thereby forwardly from between the plates 1 and 2.
When the'pin 8 passes from the forward end of the slot 5 into the slot 6, the plate 15 is elevated, and at the same time the arm is swung around to the side in either direction and moved along to the side of the hollow base, with the pin S traveling in the slot 6.
lWhen the arm 7 is moved at right angles to the front edge of the base, one side of said arm Will bear against the forward end of the corresponding one of the strips 3.
The plate 14 is now moved upon its pivot so as to swing the plate 15 around into position where it can be readily seen by the operator of the machine, and the lower end of the leaf-spring 16 is engaged in one of the notches 11 to lock the plate 15 in proper position.
rlhe book or sheet containing the notes to be transcribed or copied is now inserted beneath the ends of the spring 17 and is thus held in a position convenient to the operator.
The copy-holding plate 15 can be adjusted laterally relative to the hollow base by moving the arm 7 outwardly or inwardly to the proper point, and in 'so doing the pin 8 travells through the corresponding portion of the s ot 6.
.A copy-holder of my improved construction is simple, easily opened or folded, holds the work on either side of the operator, and the housing thereof forms a substantial base on which the type-writer is positioned.
When not in use, the copy-holding plate is folded into an out-of-the-way position, and
therefore does not take up any room on the desk or table adjacent the type-writer.
I claim- 1. In a copy-holder for type-writers, a hollow base, and a copy-holding plate arranged to dslide in said base; substantially as speci- 2. In a copy-holder for type-writers, a hollow base, an arm arranged to slide therein, and a copy-holding plate carried by said arm; substantially as specified.
3. In a copy-holder for type-writers, a hollow base, an arm arranged to slide therein, and an adjustable copy-holding plate hinged to the outer end of said arm; substantially as specified.
4. In a copy-holder for type-writers, a hollow base, an arm arranged to slide therein, a hinged copy-holding plate pivotally connected to the outer end of the arm, and a copy-holding spring arranged on the face of the copy -holding plate; substantially as specified.
5. In a copy-holder for type-writers, a hollow base, an arm arranged to slide therein, a hinged copy-holding plate pivotally connected to the outer end of the arm, and means whereby said plate is looked at various plocslitions on said arm; substantially as speci- In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
