To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, AMELIE MEROERET, a citizen of the Unlted States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have ini vented a certain new and useful Copy or Book Holder. of which the following is such a full,

clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a i holder for copy-books or the like which will 1 be simple and compact enough to serve as a copy-holder in connection with type-writing machines or otherwise and at the same time will have suflicient strength and durability and be capable of suflicient adjustment and extension to serve as a book-holder for ordinary purposes in reading and writing.

This base 10 is preferably made of wood and is also preferably made in the shape shown in Fig. 1, being provided with three slots or grooves ll, 12, and 13, respectively, for purposes hereinafter to be described. Secured to the base 10 is a disk 14:. This disk may be secured to the base by means of screws 15 or in any other suitable manner. disk 1% is a tube 16. Sliding in the tube 16 is a rod 17, which forms, together with the tube 16, the standard of the holder.

18 is a set-screw by means of which the rod 17 is held in any desired position in the tube 16.

Carried at the upper end of the rod 17 is a pivot-block 19, provided with an opening 20 for the passage of a pivot, by means of which it is secured to the supporting-plate, as will be hereinafter described.

22 is the supporting-plate, which is preferably formed of sheet metal, such as brass. At the lower edge of the supporting-plate 22 is formed a ledge 23 in the usual manner. Rigidly secured to the rear face of the supporting- Threaded into the i plate 22 and are each provided with a slot 25. l Passing through these slots 25 and the opening 20 in the pivot-block 19 is a threaded bolt 26. This bolt is provided at one end with a stop 1 27, which is rigidly secured to the said bolt l and is so formed, as best shown in Fig. 1, as l to prevent the rotation of the bolt by means of its engagement with the base-plate 22. The opposite end of the bolt 26 is provided with a thumb-nut 28, by means of which the guide-plates 2* are clamped against the pivotblock 19 to hold the parts in fixed relation. Inter-posed between the thumb-nut 2S and the adjacent guideplate 24: a washer 29.

Pivoted in lugs 32, carried at the rear and at one side of the base-plate 22, is an angular bar This bar 33 is normally prevented from rotating by means of a spring 3-1, which is brazed or otherwise secured to the rear face of the base-plate 22 and bears against the fiat pieces of the angular bar 33. Freely sliding on the bar 33 is a bearing-block 35. This block 35 carries the line-indicator 36. The

line-indicator 36 is secured to the block 35 by means of a screw 37, passing through a slot 38 in the overturned end of the said line-indicator and into the block The block 35 is also provided with a screw 39, adapted to engage with a slot 4.0 in the indicator 36. By this construction the line-indicator is normally held in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3. If, however, it is desired to use the holder for holding books or for similar purposes where the line-indicator is not necessary, the indicator can be moved longitudinally, so as to bring the slot *LO out of engagement with the screw 39. The indicator can then swing on the screw 37 as a pivot, so as j to move parallel with the bar 33, and the bar 33 can be rotated against the pressure of the spring 3%, so as to move the line-indicator entirely to the rear of the supporting-plate 22.

In order to secure the copy to the plate 22, I prefer to use a spring-clamp 42, preferably made of thin sheet metal. I prefer to secure this clamp to the supporting-plate 22 by means of a chain e3, so that the clamp may be used on either side or at the top of the plate 22.

It will be evident that my holder, while simple of construction and compact, is very strong and is capable of all necessary adjustments to adapt it for its various uses. The

slots or grooves 11, 12, and 13 in the base enable it to be used with the Remington typewriting machine, as the base 10 can be placed beneath the machine. The groove 11 accommodates the rear flange of the machine, the groove 12 the cross-bar, between which and the key-bars the springs are placed, and the front groove 13 accommodates the wires passing down through the ends of the universal bar. When the device is adjusted so as to be in its most compact form, as shown in Fig. 3, it can be placed completely out of the way behind an ordinary type-writing machine. At the same time it can be extended to such a height that it can be readily used on the arm of a chair or even on the seat of a chair which is not provided with an arm.

Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. In a copy or book holder, the combination with a base, of a standard carried by said base, a pivot-block carried by said standard, a supporting-plate, a pair of slotted guideplates rigidly secured to said supporting-plate and extending longitudinally thereof, and a clamp device extending through the slots in said guide-plates and said pivot-block to clamp the block and plates together.

In a copy or book holder, the combination with a flat, grooved base adapted to project beneath a type-Writing machine, of a standard carried by said base, a pivot-block carried by said standard, a supporting-plate, a pair of slotted guide-plates rigidly secured to said supporting-plate and extending longitudinally thereof, and a clamp device extending through the slots in said guide-plates and said pivot-block to clamp said block and plates together.

In a copy or book holder, the combination with a base, of a standard carried by said base, a supporting-plate carried by said standard, a guide-bar extending longitudinally of said supporting-plate and situated at the rear thereof and a line-guide slidingly carried by said guide-bar, such line-guide being adapted to fold parallel with said guide-bar.

In a copy or book holder, the combination with a base, of a standard carried by said base, a supporting-plate carried by said standard, a guide-bar pivotally carried by said su pporting-plate and extending longitudinally at the rear thereof, and aline-guide slidingly carried by said guide-bar, said line-guide beibng adapted .to fold parallel with said guide- 5. In a copy or book holder, the combination with a base, of a standard carried by said base, a supporting-plate carried by said standard, a guide-bar extending longitudinally of said supporting-plate, a guide-block sliding on said guide-bar, a line-guide carried by said guide-block and normally locked at right angles to said guide-bar, and means controlled by the longitudinal movement of said lineguide for releasing the same.

6. In a copy or book holder, the combination with a base, of astandard carried by said base, a supporting-plate carried by said standard, a guide-bar extending longitudinally of said supporting-plate, a guide-block sliding on said guide-bar, a line-guide provided with a slot and a notch', a screw passing through said slot into said guide-block, and a projection carried by said block and adapted to engage with said notch.
