To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ivan H. P. COLLEEN, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Stuart, in the county of Guthrie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Copy-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in copy holders for typewriters and the object in view is to produce a simple and eflicientdevice of this nature which may be fastened to the frame of the machine in such a manner as to hold the copy in a convenient position for ready access to the operator, or mounted upon a table, wall or partition, convenient to the operator.
The invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the rear side of a copy holder embodying the in vention and mounted upon a standard independent of a typewriting machine. Fig. 2 is a similar perspective view from the front of the device. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the copy holder showing the same mounted upon a modified form of standard;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 44 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a slightly modified form of a copy holder shown as applied to the frame of a typewriter. Fig. 6 is a rear view in perspective of the form shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a still different modified form of copy holder. Fig. 8 is a perspective view showing a modified form of the sup porting means for the copy holder and adapted to be attached to the side of a wall. ' Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a base board having a socket member A fastened thereto and in which a vertically disposed standard A is mounted, which has at its upper end a laterally projecting arm A provided with threaded apertures for the reception of the set screw A-.
B designates a copy' holding board or plate, having flanges B at two of its opposite edges. A reinforcing plate, designated by letter B and provided with flanges B is fastened to the rear face of the board or plate B in any suitable manner. One of the flanges B is fastened to one of the flanges B and the other flange, B, is positioned intermediate the two flanges B. Said flanges, B and B, being provided with registering apertures for the reception of the rods or bars B Projecting from one of the flanges B of the board are the lugs B adapted to form means for limiting the movement of the copy in one direction upon said board. Projecting laterally from the flange having said lugs B are the apertured rods B adapted to receive the pins B which are fixed, at corresponding ends, to the rod B. Set screws B are mounted in the threaded ends of the rods B and adapted to engage the pins B to hold the same in adjusted positions. The rod B is provided with an adjustable collar B held in an adjusted position by a spring pressed pin C mounted in a hollow arm thereof, and the inner end of said spring pressed pin is designed to frictionally bear against the rod 13*. Projecting laterally from the collar B are the two rods C and C The rod C bears against the head D of a yielding pin D, between the head of which and an angled member D a coiled spring D bears. Said member D is adjust-ably held upon the rod B", by means of a set screw D which engages the rod B".
.The rod C extends transversely across the face of the copy holder and is adapted to engage and hold the copy flat and yieldingly against the same, said spring-actuated-pin D serving to hold the rod 0 frictionally against the copy.
E designates a clip catch, having integral lugs E, which are apertured to receive a pivot pin E which is carried by the integral lugs E formed upon the strip E fastened to the copy holding plate or board, said member Ff serving as a handle to be gripped when it is desired to tilt the jaw E upon its pivot. It will be noted that the jaw end of the clip-catch is bent at an angle and that a portion of the shank is in alinement with the copy-stopping'lugs, B, so that the shank portion thereof will not interfere with the turning back of the leaves of the copy held by the clip-catch.
Adjustably held upon the lower of the rods 13 is the yoke member F, having apertures to receive the rod and a set screw F to hold said yoke in an adjusted position. An angled rod F passes through an aperture in said yoke and is held in an adjusted position by means of a set screw F The forward tilting movement of the rod F is limited by its upper portion coming in contact with the upper of said rods B A similar angled rod, designated by letter F is mounted in a socket member F shown clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and which has an aperture for the reception of the rod B and a set screw F to hold said member F in an adjusted position, while the an gled rod F is held in an adjusted position in an aperture in said member by means of a set screw F An extension member, designated by letter G, formed of a rod having a bail-shaped portion bent at right angles to the plane of the board is provided, one end of which is adapted to engage a socket member Gr fitted over the end of the upper of the rods B and held therein by means of a set screw G while its other end G which is angled, is adapted to rest loosely against the lower of the rods B Said member G is adapted to support the cover of a book held upon the copy holder.
Referring to Fig. 3 of the drawings, I have shown my improved copy holder as mounted upon a standard H, having its upper end H angled and fastened by set screw H upon the integral projection H at the lower end of the board, said standard being given half twist at H and its lower end adjust-ably held in a socket member H in the threaded portion in which a set screw H is mounted, adapted to engage and hold said standard in an adjusted position. Said socket member is shown as provided with laterally projecting wings H fastened to a suitable base H Referring to Figs. 5 and 11, it will be noted that the rod J has a rotatable collar L mounted thereon, which collar has the bar L fastened thereto, affording means for holding the copy upon. the plate. Fixed to said bar L are the two yokes L and L provided with registering apertures for the reception of the pin L which has a coiled spring L mounted about the shank portion thereof and bearing against a shoulder upon said pin at the inner end and against the under side of the yoke L, the inner end of said pin being adapted to engage the rod J to hold the collar in an adjusted position thereon.
Referring to Fig. 5 of the drawings will be seen a modified form of copy holder, in which the plate or board N has a reinforcing member N fastened to the rear thereof, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings, and which reinforcing member has a flange N at one end fastened to the flange N of the board and at the bottom of the modified form, shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, is a wing or lug N apertured for the reception of the set screw N which engages athreaded opening in the end of the supporting rod N a suitable jam nut N being mounted upon the set screw N, as shown clearly in Fig. 14 of the drawings. Said supporting rod N is held in an aperture in the socket clamping memher 0 having an aperture for the reception of the set screw 0 designed to engage and hold the rod hl in an adjusted position. Said clamping member O cooperates with a clamping jaw 0 which engages over the frame of a typewriter in the manner shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings and laterally projecting flanges O which are disposed parallel to each other have screws 0 mounted in threaded openings in said flanges for holding the two plates in clamped relation to the frame of a typewriter, the upper portion of the clamping frame 0 being held also by screws 0 in the manner shown.
In Fig. 7 of the drawings, I have shown a modified form of the copy holder which in this instance comprises a skeleton frame Q having an angled plate Q fastened thereto and held by means of a set screw Q upon the standard Q which latter is shown as being held in a socket Q in the clamping member 0 which, cooperating with the clamping jaw Q forms means for holding the same to the frame of a typewriter at any convenient location. 7
In Fig. 8 of the drawings, I have shown the copy-holder P of the same general construction illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings as being provided with a socket member P having a set screw P for holding the same adjustably upon the bracket arm R held to swing laterally in a socket member It fastened to the wall or partition B In Fig. 9 of the drawings, I have shown the copy holder as provided with a later ally projecting rod T held in a collar T in which a set screw T is mounted to hold said collar in an adjustable position upon the standard T A socket member '1 is fastened to a base T and held in adjusted position by means of a set screw T In Fig. 10 of the drawings, I have shown a copy-holder S fastened to an angled bracket arm S, which is adapted to swing laterally by being held in a socket member S fastened to the wall or partition of a room in the same manner as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings.
It will thus be seen that by the provision of a copy-holder made in accordance with my invention, a simple and efiicient apparatus is aflorded whereby the copy of various thicknesses may be held securely, and the line indicating rod so arranged that it will bind frictionally against the copy and hold the same upon the plate. By having the copy-stopping lugs at the edge of the copy-holding plate, the copy will be held from being moved too far in one direction, and by the particular form of clip catches, the leaves of the copy may be readily turned back without any interference from the parts, while the bail-shaped attachments upon the parallel rods will afford means for holding the cover or portion of the book open.
WVhat I claim to be new is 1. A copy holder for typewriters, comprising a copy-holding plate, a support therefor, lugs projecting from one edge of the plate and adapted to limit the movement of the copy in one direction, a springpressed clip catch mounted upon the plate and adapted to hold the copy upon the latter, apertured posts projecting from said plate, pins adjustably" held in the apertures of said posts, a rod fixed to said pins, and a liner adjustably mounted upon said rod.
2. A copy holder for typewriters, com prising a copy-holding plate, a support therefor, lugs projecting from one edge of the plate and adapted to limit the movement of the copy in one direct-ion, a springpressed clip catch mounted upon the plate and adapted to hold the copy upon the latter, apertured posts projecting from said plate, pins adjustably held in the apertures of said posts, a rod fixed to said pins, a liner adjustably mounted upon said rod, and means movable with said liner, and cooperating with said rod, for holding the liner in an adjustable position.
3. A copy holder for typewriters, comprising a copy-holding plate, a support therefor, lugs projecting from one edge of the plate and adapted to limit the movement of the copy in one direction, a springpressed clip catch mounted upon the plate and adapted to hold the copy upon the latter, apertured posts projecting from said plate, pins adjustably held in the apertures of said posts, a rod fixed to said pins, a liner adjustably mounted upon said rod, a yoke adjustably mounted upon said rod, and a spring-pressed pin carried by said yoke and adapted to hold the liner against the copyholding plate.

A copy holder for typewriters, comprising a copy-holding plate, a support therefor, lugs projecting from one edge of the plate and adapted to limit the movement of the copy in one direction, a springpressed clip catch mounted upon the plate and adapted to hold. the copy upon the latter, the jaw end of the clip catch being bent at an angle to allow a copy clamped thereby against the plate to be turned over the top of the plate, apertured posts projecting from said plate, pins adjustably held in the apertures of said posts, a rod fixed to said pins, a collar adjustably held upon said rod, a liner fixed to said collar, and means for holding said collar in an adjusted position.
5. A copy holder for typewriters comprising a plate having its opposite ends bent to form flanges parallel to each other and apertured, a standard fixed to said copy holder, apertured posts projecting from one flange of the copy holder, pins adjustably mounted in said posts, a rod fastened to said pins, a collar upon said rod, a liner fixed to the latter and, a spring-actuated pin fixed to said collar adapted to keep the liner in adjusted positions against the copyholder plate, and means for supporting a copy.

A copy holder for typewriters comprising a copyholding plate having a flanged edge, a reinforced plate fastened to said flanged plate and provided with a flange in contact with the flange of the first mentioned plate, a lug projecting from the lower edges of one of said plates, a standard fastened to said lug, lugs projecting from one edge of the copy holder plate and adapted to limit the movement of the copy inone direction, apertured posts projecting from the copy holding plate, pins adjustably held in the apertures of said posts, a rod fastened to said pins, a collar adjustably mounted upon said rod which is fastened to the pins, a liner fastened to said collar, yokes fastened to the latter, a spring-pressed pin carried by said yokes and adapted to engage the collar supporting rod.

A copy holder for typewriters comprising a copyholding plate having an end bent to form a flange which is apertured, a reinforcing plate fastened to the rear of said flanged plate and having one of its opposite edges bent to form a flange which is apertured, a standard fastened to said copyholding plate, lugs projecting from one edge of the copy holder plate and adapted a We I to limit the movement of the copy in one direction, posts projecting from the copy holding plate, pins adjustably held in the apertures of said posts, a rod fastened to said pins, a collar adjustably mounted upon said rod which is fastened to the pins, a liner having a curved ofii'set engaging said collar, yokes fastened to the liner, a springpressed pin carried by the yokes and adapted to engage and hold the liner in an adjusted position.
